Several peers were baffled as to why Greensky Bluegrass’ tour bill lacked a San Francisco date. After all, their fall tour which brought them to the Fillmore was exceptionally attended with some of the finest bluegrass listeners this side of the Rockies. Whatever the reason, Greensky chose instead to head to Santa Cruz for a night of grass at the Catalyst. To be honest, I am sure glad they did.

While the attendance seemed a little light for this unequivocally awesome band, the crowd certainly filled the room with their presence. Santa Cruz got down. As for Greensky, these string aficionados out of Michigan have been touring relentlessly over the years, tightening their picking as they mutually improvise. Highlights certainly included “Don’t Lie” and “Handguns”, two tracks of their most recent album and arguably their greatest work to date. Whatever color, the sky truly seems the limit with this bluegrass outfit. Masters of the strings, I am convinced the best is yet to come from Greensky Bluegrass. Whether it be in Santa Cruz or San Francisco, you will certainly find me at their next bay area performance.
