Andrew Marlin and Emily Frantz have been making music together for more than a decade, but it was only less than a year ago that they decided to change their band’s name.

The husband-and-wife team from Chapel Hill, N.C., in fact, released six studio albums beginning with 2010’s Quiet Little Room and performed at major music festivals across the U.S. like Austin City Limits, South by Southwest, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Newport Folk Festival and Hardly Strictly Bluegrass as Mandolin Orange before announcing its new identity last April.

And when they settled on Watchhouse just months before the release of their self-titled LP in August, it was for good reason with Marlin (vocals, mandolin, guitar, banjo) explaining that “Mandolin Orange was born out of my 21-year-old mind” and “the name isn’t what I strive for when I write” while the alternative represented the project’s “true intentions” after he recorded two instrumental albums during the COVID-19 pandemic without Frantz (vocals, violin, guitar).

Now, the folk duo are back on the road for their “Somewhere Beyond The Darkness Tour” that spans 25 dates across North America and will see them play The Theatre at Ace Hotel in LA this Saturday. Showcasing his talents as a bassist and guitarist, he will be sharing the stage with Chuck Treece, Josh Lippi and Matt Rodriguez, and this is a performance you won’t want to miss.

An early pioneer in the sample-based subgenre vaporwave, George Clanton originally started his career under the moniker ESPRIT 空想 in 2011 and gained traction through the release of his debut album virtua.zip.

Departing from his pseudonym and experimenting with a pop album in 2015, Clanton rejuvenated his image with one of Gorilla vs. Bear’s 10 best albums of the year in 100% Electronica and hasn’t looked back.

The next year, he opened for SOPHIE and Charli XCX at their South by Southwest showcase, which garnered plenty of praise from critics, and formed a record label he also named 100% Electronica with his girlfriend. Since then, he has toured among the ranks of internet-based, vaporwave sensations. His 2018 LP Slide sold out all of its copies during the pre-order phase, earning favorable reviews from a number of major media outlets such as Pitchfork.

The New Parish in Oakland is celebrating their 10th anniversary this week with a performance from one of the city’s homegrown talents, Kamaiyah.

Regarded as one of XXL’s Top 10 rappers in its “2017 Freshman Class,” Kamaiyah Johnson has fast-tracked her way into the hip-hop spotlight with the release of her debut single “How Does It Feel”, which was featured on Pitchfork’s and NPR’s “Best of the Year” lists back in 2015.

After unveiling her first mixtape the following year, Kamaiyah appeared on festival bills around the country, including a coveted spot at South by Southwest and one of the most memorable sets at the rain-soaked, 10th annual edition of Treasure Island Music Festival (read our review here). Since then, she has collaborated with YG and Drake, and last year “Addicted to Ballin'” saw her team up with ScHoolboy Q.

Los Angeles-based songwriter and electronic musician Goldroom sets sail on the SF Bay this Saturday for his High Seas Boat Tour and is bringing some of the biggest names in nu-disco, house and funk along with him on the open sea for four hours.

No stranger to nautical adventures, Josh Legg, better known by his stage name Goldroom, is a longtime sailor who has mentioned extensively that his passion for the ocean has influenced not only the style of his music, but also the sounds he likes to create in the studio. Captaining this lineup of electronic instrumentalists, the Massachusetts native and USC alumnus writes compositions deeply rooted in the West Coast scene, drawing inspiration from classic disco, funk, synthwave and pop.

GIGAMESH, LUXXURY and MANICS will also hop on board to offer a mix of indie-dance jams, dub remixes, and live percussion, modulation and visuals. While all three have already made names for themselves as multi-platinum-selling artists, dublab radio hosts and staples in the global club and festival scene, their ability to rock a dance floor, whether on land or water, is indisputable by now.

Detroit’s Protomartyr have been making waves with their post-punk material, which features Joe Casey (vocals), Greg Ahee (guitar), Scott Davidson (bass) and Alex Leonard (drums), ever since they formed back in 2008. Four years after joining forces, the quartet released its debut album No Passion, All Technique via Urinal Cake Records.

That same year, Protomartyr followed with their single “Colpi Proibiti” before dropping Under Color of Official Right in 2014. Filled with a raw sensibility and highlighted by Casey’s baritone vocals, the band’s sophomore LP became a sensation for post-punk fans, who often compared its sound to Joy Division, the Fall and Nick Cave.

Protomartyr, after rising in the punk scene, came back a little more than 12 months later with their third album The Agent Intellect, which was critically acclaimed by a multitude of major media outlets, including the Chicago Tribune, Rolling Stone and Spin.

After touring all across the U.S. and Europe while performing at South by Southwest, CMJ Music Marathon and Pitchfork Music Festival, Protomartyr signed with Domino Records a year ago and delivered their latest studio effort Relatives in Descent that shows the group’s continued evolution through new layers and insights without taking away the edge it once cultivated in earlier times.

Paul Oakenfold can easily be seen as an electronic music legend. For the past three decades, the English record producer and DJ has elevated and shaped an entire genre while remaining one of its leading forces.

Growing up as the son of a musician, Oakenfold became a young DJ in the late 70’s who was influenced by funk music before taking a couple of life-changing trips in the 80’s that helped skyrocket his career. The first came in 1984, when he returned to his hometown of London to work in the A&R department at Champion Records and became the promoter for the Beastie Boys and Run-DMC. The second was in 1987, when he visited Ibiza and was inspired by the local Balearic sound.

Oakenfold began his career after the latter of the two trips, bringing the sounds of Ibiza back to his home country, but it wasn’t until he earned a residency at UK superclub Cream that he became a globally respected master of electronic music following the release of the Grammy-nominated Creamfields compilation in 2004.

Oakenfold’s role as a DJ and entertainer has taken him to the edges of the world beyond just nightclubs and festivals, including three world tours supporting Madonna and U2, a live gig on the Great Wall of China and two sold-out shows at the one and only Hollywood Bowl. His music more recently has taken him from the DJ booth to several movie studios, where he has produced the soundtracks for a number of blockbuster hits.

Since forming in 2000 and releasing their debut EP Mexico, Hot Chip have remained one of today’s most distinctive and innovative bands with the way they combine indie and dance music in a refreshing manner. In addition to being known for their exciting, upbeat DJ sets and one-of-a-kind live performances, the London outfit has put out six studio albums, two mixed LPs, and both national and international radio mixes.

While Mexico launched the septet to stardom, frontman Alexis Taylor’s dreamy falsettos and Joe Goddard’s gruff vocals, plinky pianos and hypnotic, pulse-like techno beats have drawn more and more fans in worldwide. Each and every Hot Chip show feels unique, as the band’s members reinvent their original studio compositions and form an intense live improvisation that creates an energetic atmosphere.

Over the last 17 years, Hot Chip have performed in front of thousands at major music festivals like Coachella, Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits. The group has also received its fair share of accolades and recognition, including a Mercury Prize nomination for The Warning in 2006, a Grammy nomination for “Ready for the Floor” in 2009 and most recently, two Virgin Media Music award nominations in 2010.

Hot Chip released their sixth and most recent LP Why Make Sense? in 2015, reuniteing them with In Our Heads producer Mark Ralph as they explored a variety of sounds, from 90’s R&B to disco to post-punk.

The Stone Foxes are SF’s rock band. Originating in the sleepy foothills of California’s Central Valley where former founding member Aaron Mort as well as brothers Spence (guitar, vocals) and Shannon Koehler (drums, harmonica, vocals) grew up, the group formed while attending San Francisco State University when Elliot Peltzman (keyboards, vocals), Vince Dewald (bass, vocals) and Ben Andrews (guitar, vocals) came aboard.

Since their formation in 2005, The Stone Foxes have carried the torch of their predecessors with the knowledge and belief that rock ‘n’ roll can move a new generation. After spending the first few years together developing and balancing its musical style, the six-piece’s self-titled debut LP hit the shelves in 2008 and was met with adoration.

Over the last few years, The Stone Foxes have played in front of thousands at major music festivals and have been featured on TV shows, such as Showtime’s “Shameless” and FX’s “Sons of Anarchy”. They’ve headlined the legendary Fillmore in SF and toured with huge bands like The Black Keys, Cage the Elephant and ZZ Top, invoking their audiences with a commanding, energetic stage presence that has built them a strong reputation among live music fans.

The Stone Foxes’ fourth and most recent LP Twelve Spells came out in 2015 and chronicles their new beginning with lyrics and sounds that take on the issues of their lives and ours, tying elements of western darkness, punk, surf and Americana to their rock ‘n’ roll roots. Their latest single “Broken” dropped earlier this year and has been met with rave reviews.

Since forming in 2010, Canadian indie-electronic pop duo HUMANS have consistently impressed audiophiles with their composition skills and reputation of performing with unbelievable amounts of energy.

Vancouver’s own Robbie Slade and Peter Riq created HUMANS after spending the summer making music together and then dropped their self-released EP Avec Mes Mecs, which was quickly accepted as a house-party staple by fans around the globe.

HUMANS have established a unique sound through their successful fusion of experimental-electronic elements and catchy, indie-pop hooks that entered the spotlight on their 2012 EP Traps. Consequently, they held the No. 1 spot on the Earshot Electronic charts for six weeks following the release and continue to receive high praise from music media outlets such as Resident Advisor, DJ Mag and Exclaim!

Over the past few years, HUMANS have toured North America with festival slots at South by Southwest, Squamish Valley Music Festival, Bass Coast Music and Arts Festival, CMJ Music Marathon and more, and have been featured in projects with Red Bull, Entourage and MTV. The duo has also steadily been expanding its creative endeavors into the world of directing and visual artistry.

Creating feelings of pure joy, total love, endless freedom and infinite possibility are just brief glimpses into the musical stylings of multi-faceted singer-songwriter and performer Andrew W.K. (born Andrew Fetterly Wilkes-Krier). After starting his musical career when he was four years old, it didn’t take long for the Michigan native to explore some experimental interests that ultimately led to creating his own high-energy brand of rock music.

Skipping out on college at the age of 18 and moving to New York City to pursue music on his own, W.K. developed his sound through various solo projects and eventually moved to Florida to start a band with drummer Donald “D.T.” Tardy, leading to the release his first EP Girls Own Juice (abbreviated as AWKGOJ) on Bulb Records. Fast forward to 2017, and the self-proclaimed party animal has been rockin’ hard for over a decade with nine studio albums, including his infamous debut I Get Wet that features smash hit “Party Hard”.

Over the past few years, Andrew W.K. has been steadily expanding his creative endeavors to the worlds of motivational speaking, production, TV and broadcast media, and music venue ownership. Starting in 2008 with the opening of his co-owned music venue and nightclub in New York City called Santos Party House, Andrew W.K.’s hunger for more has earned him a number of appearances on MTV and VH1 along with a Grammy nomination while working as a record producer. He’s also releasing a new album next year on Sony Music Worldwide, but until then, fans will just have to keep partying because well, the party never dies.

This Thursday, Andrew W.K. will be back in SF by popular demand to play a second night at The Independent with Oakland quartet SHAME WAVES opening. Tickets are available for $25, or you could win a pair of tickets by submitting your full name and email below.

It’s time to keep a close eye on Seattle-based beatsmith and producer Sango. His quickly growing fan base and worldwide critically acclaimed music are rapidly expanding as he prepares to release his first major commercial record via Wright Music Group.

Infusing Afro-punk, Brazilian baile funk and hip-hop with soulful R&B, Sango produces tracks that combine various elements into his own distinctive sound, as evidenced by his popular remixes of Aaliyah, Drake, Little Dragon, Nas and The Weeknd in addition to his debut album North, and his Baile Funk EP series Da Rocinha. Plus, not only has he been producing his own music since the age of 12, Sango is a talented graphic designer who impressively has designed all of his releases up to date.

In the past four years, Sango has taken his production skills from his college dorm to cities worldwide and now consistently collaborates with some of the best in the business. Along with touring his Da Rocinha projects in more than 50 cities worldwide, he has produced for some of the industry’s hottest acts, such as Tinashe, Bryson Tiller and Mick Jenkins. It’s clear that he is more than just a producer, but an artist in his own right — and his music is just one component of the growing statement he wishes to make.

2017 has been a huge year for Seattle-based experimental hip-hop group Shabazz Palaces. From the minds of Ishmael Butler (aka Palaceer Lazaro) and multi-instrumentalist Tendai “Baba” Maraire, the duo broke onto the scene in 2009 with its first two EPs Eagles Soar, Oil Flows and The Seven New, which were both self-released anonymously. Subsequently, those releases led to Shabazz Palaces’ instant popularity and them signing with the renowned Sub Pop Records as one of the label’s few hip-hop acts.

In 2011, they dropped their debut LP Black Up, which was named as the No. 1 album among local music acts by the Seattle Times. Then in 2014, their second studio album Lese Majesty premiered at Seattle’s Pacific Science Center Laser Dome and went on to be a huge hit with fans. So far this year, Shabazz Palaces have already released two themed albums, entitled Quazarz: Born on a Gangster Star and Quazarz vs. The Jealous Machines, that views modern America as though it were a strange planet.

Influenced by abstract muses, Butler and Maraire often find inspiration in various podcasts, mixtapes, jazz overtones and African percussion, and for their newest albums, utilized that material to tell the story of a protagonist by the name of Quazarz (and played by Butler) who navigates this new planet that feels familiar and terrifying on Gangster Star. Meanwhile, the ensuing Jealous Machines depicts how devices are used as extensions of ourselves and how we have become dependent on them to exist. What makes Shabazz Palaces compelling to listen to is their free-form composition structure that allows the listener to make their own conclusions and mental connections.

At just 21 years old, Marcel Everett is a prominent record producer and electronic musician who records and performs under the name XXYYXX. Growing up in Orlando, he began his career at 13, eventually finding himself deeply experimenting with electronic music.

Influenced by Lapalux, Star Slinger and Disclosure, Everett engrossed himself in creating his own crisp, experimental-bass sound and started building a following through his remixes of Usher, Future and Tinashe. His big break came back in 2013, when his single “Pay Attention” exceeded 1 million plays on Bandcamp. That same year, he headlined Noise Pop and put out “What We Want” on the “Grand Theft Auto V” soundtrack to further his career.

Everett has spent the majority of this past year touring as well as playing large-scale music festivals like HARD Summer, Mysteryland USA and Ancient Future. In 2016, he was credited for working on Torey Lanez’s single “Flex” that appeared on rapper/singer’s debut LP I Told You. XXYYXX’s hottest tracks include “About You”, “Fields” and “DMT”.

This Saturday, you can catch XXYYXX perform live at an undisclosed location in the Bay Area after UK producer ElderBrook and Chicago’s very own DJ Pierre take the stage at an unofficial all-night Outside Lands 2017 after party. A limited number of tickets are still available for $20, or you could win a pair of tickets by submitting your full name and email below.

In 2014, New York DJ/producer Sam Lassner started releasing music under the name Prince Fox, which was inspired by the characters in the book “The Little Prince” by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, and quickly discovered the limitless possibilities when it comes to making electronic dance music.

Lassner, from there, engrossed himself in creating his own sound and began building a loyal, dedicated following through his various remixes of 3LAU, Sam Smith, Florence & the Machine and CAZZETTE. His big break came just a year later, when he signed with Casablanca Records, a label that’s owned by Universal Music Group and operated under Republic Records.

Prince Fox has continued to soar since he released his collaboration with Melody Noel titled “I Don’t Wanna Love You”, which has accrued over 1.6 million streams on Spotify. His most recent tracks include a remix of Hey Violet’s “Guys My Age” and “Just Call” featuring Bella Thorne, both of which came out earlier this month.

It’s Oysterfest once again in Golden Gate Park this weekend, and the 18th annual edition features electronic indie-pop at its finest with Passion Pit, KONGOS and Sir Sly on the bill. Enjoy the 50th anniversary of the “Summer of Love” with oysters, Guinness live music and other tasty food options. It looks like it might be a little breezy at the park on Saturday, so bring a sweater and a positive attitude!

Passion Pit will induce a dance party with their hit songs “Sleepyhead” and “Take a Walk”, two singles that have shaped the indie-pop scene since their release. And between KONGOS’ classic alternative sound and Sir Sly’s low-fi tone, this year’s Oysterfest offers an eclectic mix for everyone to enjoy.

Offering more than just live music, the one-day festival will also include a silent disco, oyster pairings, a “Shuck and Suck” contest and a presentation by The Wild Oyster Project as a way to educate attendees about the conservation of oysters throughout the Bay Area. Showbams will be there to gobble up some barbecued oysters, so hopefully we’ll see you there!

GA tickets are almost gone but are still available to purchase here, while a limited number of tickets remain for the private tables backstage, which can seat up to eight and include a full bar, table service, table-side seafood platters, a buffet, expedited Will Call, a meet-and-greet opportunity, and an event T-shirt and tote bag. It’s been a while since LA State Historic Park has hosted a music festival — almost three years to be exact. The 34-acre open space just north of LA’s Chinatown neighborhood, after all, had been under construction during that time, with progress on the developement getting delayed at one point due to soil contamination at the site.

But in March, Radio Hill Events, a new group of concert producers, talent buyers and festival planners, teamed up with KCRW to announce Skyline, a single-day music, art and food event that will mark the first major music gathering at the recently remodeled park.

Featuring performances by Duke Dumont, Miike Snow, Lido, EDEN, Michl, ELOHIM and Jason Bentley, the fest’s inaugural music lineup leans heavily on electronic acts who play “live” (as opposed to performing a DJ set).

Kicking off the festivities this Saturday at 2 p.m. will be a surprise opener before Miike Snow and Duke Dumont close things out with back-to-back sets each lasting an hour (view the set times below).

If you’re looking for something to do this weekend and are itching to see some live music, you don’t want to miss this brand-new festival in downtown LA. Tickets are available for $50, but you could win a pair of tickets by submitting your full name and email below.

Coachella (read our festival review here) may have come and gone, but your chance to see everyone from that desert lineup is not over! What So Not hits the Bay this weekend for a sold-out show.

Australian producer Chris Emerson began releasing music under the name Emoh Instead in collaboration with Flume back in 2011. He has since ventured off on his own under the alias What So Not and is now signed to OWSLA Records.

What So Not’s big break came in 2014 after the release of “High You Are (Branchez Remix)”, and his name has continued to soar since. His most recent EP Divide & Conquer came out in September as well as the single “Waiting” featuring RL Grime and Skrillex.

Emerson is hitting the festival circuit hard this summer (including a stop at HARD Summer), but he’s also coming to SF as part of his 2017 spring tour. This Friday, What So Not brings his unique style of combining house, hip-hop and bass to 1015 Folsom for what’s sure to be one hell of a party. Singer/guitarist Brian King and drummer David Prowse are all who make up Japandroids. Listening to their music, it may surprise you that there are only two members in the band. With a sound big enough to fill arenas, you’d expect them to be more than just a duo, but somehow they manage to the find the energy simply within themselves.

Releasing their critically acclaimed debut LP Post Nothing back in 2009, Japandroids broke into the mainstream with their 2012 follow-up Celebration Rock, certified by UPROXX music critic Steven Hyden as one of the greatest records to drive a car to and get in a fight to — an opinion that’s hard to disagree with if you ask me. In January, the Canadian garage rockers released Near to the Wild Heart of Life, a blistering, full-length assault that further expands their sound into more pop-friendly territory.

With their capabilities onstage receiving equal acclaim to their studio efforts, it’s no surprise that they’re playing two nights at The Fillmore, with the second show set for this Wednesday.
