Detroit’s Protomartyr have been making waves with their post-punk material, which features Joe Casey (vocals), Greg Ahee (guitar), Scott Davidson (bass) and Alex Leonard (drums), ever since they formed back in 2008. Four years after joining forces, the quartet released its debut album No Passion, All Technique via Urinal Cake Records.

That same year, Protomartyr followed with their single “Colpi Proibiti” before dropping Under Color of Official Right in 2014. Filled with a raw sensibility and highlighted by Casey’s baritone vocals, the band’s sophomore LP became a sensation for post-punk fans, who often compared its sound to Joy Division, the Fall and Nick Cave.

Protomartyr, after rising in the punk scene, came back a little more than 12 months later with their third album The Agent Intellect, which was critically acclaimed by a multitude of major media outlets, including the Chicago Tribune, Rolling Stone and Spin.

After touring all across the U.S. and Europe while performing at South by Southwest, CMJ Music Marathon and Pitchfork Music Festival, Protomartyr signed with Domino Records a year ago and delivered their latest studio effort Relatives in Descent that shows the group’s continued evolution through new layers and insights without taking away the edge it once cultivated in earlier times.

This Sunday, Protomartyr will pay a visit to the Starline Social Club in Oakland and hit the stage for a special live performance. Tickets are available for $15, or you could win a pair of tickets by submitting your full name and email below.

It’s time to keep a close eye on Seattle-based beatsmith and producer Sango. His quickly growing fan base and worldwide critically acclaimed music are rapidly expanding as he prepares to release his first major commercial record via Wright Music Group.

Infusing Afro-punk, Brazilian baile funk and hip-hop with soulful R&B, Sango produces tracks that combine various elements into his own distinctive sound, as evidenced by his popular remixes of Aaliyah, Drake, Little Dragon, Nas and The Weeknd in addition to his debut album North, and his Baile Funk EP series Da Rocinha. Plus, not only has he been producing his own music since the age of 12, Sango is a talented graphic designer who impressively has designed all of his releases up to date.

In the past four years, Sango has taken his production skills from his college dorm to cities worldwide and now consistently collaborates with some of the best in the business. Along with touring his Da Rocinha projects in more than 50 cities worldwide, he has produced for some of the industry’s hottest acts, such as Tinashe, Bryson Tiller and Mick Jenkins. It’s clear that he is more than just a producer, but an artist in his own right — and his music is just one component of the growing statement he wishes to make.

This Friday, Sango will perform at 1015 Folsom with a slew of support from MIKOS DA GAWD, Antonio Guedes, Matt Haze, Kush Arora, DOUBLE B, Danado, Izzy Wise and more as part of SF’s Brazilian Party put on by Braza! Marking its 25th anniversary this month as the West Coast’s premiere independent music and arts festival, Noise Pop returns to take over more than 30 clubs, theaters and art spaces in the Bay Area. With residencies at various locations in SF and Oakland, the festival officially kicks off with its 2017 film series and art exhibits leading into 11 days of live musical performances from nationally recognized and locally curated acts.

This year’s roster includes members of Animal Collective, Vince Staples, BADBADNOTGOOD, Dawes, Kelis, Hudson Mohawke, Ty Segall and more, Noise Pop continues its legacy as one of the nation’s leading purveyors of independent music, culture and arts.

GOODFest hits Oakland with an All-Star lineup featuring Solange & Fantastic Negrito

‘Tis the season for charity concerts and incredible one-off performances that benefit causes in need of extra attention and support right now. Hit incredibly hard by the unfathomable Ghost Ship tragedy that occurred earlier this month, Oakland has been home to quite a few of these events. Though the pain ran deep throughout the community, the heartbreaking loss brought out the best in those who were directly and indirectly affected by the fire.

Scheduled almost serendipitously during a jam-packed week full of relief benefits, charity auctions and various shows dedicated in memory to those involved in the Ghost Ship fire, a completely separate but equally amazing charity show was scheduled at Oakland’s Starline Social Club. Aptly called GOODFest, the benefit series focused on two community-organized programs located in Oakland and New Orleans.

Fantastic Negrito

Emcee’d by Glynn Washington, the host of NPR’s “Snap Judgement,” the night featured performances by up-and-coming local talent Kelsey Lu, Grammy-nominated funk-fusion outfit Fantastic Negrito and Album of the Year contender Solange Knowles. Interspersed between sets, representatives from both organizations — New Orleans’ Son of a Saint and Oakland’s Ella Baker Center — opened up about their experience and involvement in their respective causes.

All of the artists spoke before and after their performance, sharing their personal anecdotes and sentiments to enhance the evening. They addressed their own connection to the events that recently transpired in Oakland as well as the current state of national affairs that have loomed heavily over the past few months. In a room of no more than 100 people, the energy was tangible. Everyone there knew they were part of something special, and while most fans seemed to be processing the magnitude of the situation in their own way, the resounding fact that you were there for a reason bigger than the moment was unanimous.

At this point, Charlie Yin seems unstoppable. After spending most of 2015 touring the world and performing at major U.S. music festivals like Outside Lands, Electric Daisy Carnival and Life Is Beautiful, the man behind Giraffage has no time to rest.

As a hybrid of pop and trap music blended with some 8-bit Nintendo nostalgia, Yin has found a unique sound in an increasingly bland landscape of electronic music producers. In fact, his remixes of popular R&B songs and solo tracks have gained critical acclaim from music media outlets over the past few years.

Since graduating from UC Berkeley with a degree in political economics, Yin has turned his focus to music, releasing two full-length albums — 2011’s Comfort and 2013’s Needs — along with a couple of EPs, most recently No Reason in 2014. Last year, the San Jose native worked with fellow electronic artists Viceroy and Patrick Baker on his single “Impression of You” in addition to dropping remixes of ODESZA and Tinashe.

With his arsenal of samples and two-step beats, Giraffage will return to 1015 Folsom for a headlining show with support from Wingtip, Bollywood Life and a few other special guests. Tickets are available for $25, or you could win a pair of tickets by submitting your full name and email below.
