Art Neville & George Porter Jr. are still going strong after all these years, spreading the unmatchable vibes NOLA has to offer. From co-founding the Rebirth Brass Band, to transforming his love of barbecue into his band name and mid-show passion, to playing himself on HBO’s Treme, Kermit Ruffins and the BBQ Swingers are quintessential NOLA. Ruffins is one of the finest trumpeters around, and he leads this traditional jazz quintet through originals and New Orleans standards.

Chicago-based blog brothers The Hood Internet will be mixing it up at The Independent this Saturday with openers Richie Cunning and Popgang DJ’s!

Combining post-collegiate indie rock efforts and inspiration from the styles of Girl Talk and Them Jeans, the duo decided to put their own spin on the early mash-up scene. Releasing their initial tracks in 2007, on their namesake blog, it didn’t take long for their digital downloads to gain traction. By 2010 the group’s mix tapes as well as individually released tracks were featured on numerous top ten music lists, they were featured in New York Magazine then continued to garnish attention from critically acclaimed artists and corporate sponsors alike.

In 2012, The Hood Internet released their first all-original-material album Feat on Decon Records with a wide arrange of guests including Black Moth Super Rainbow’s Tobacco, Class Actress, Hooray for Earth and AC Newman. Riding off the album’s success, their latest mix tape installment Trillwave3, presented by New York City street wear brand Mishka has been making waves since it dropped this past month.

Run The Jewels is the immaculate collaboration of hybrid hip-hop ‘future-shit’ embracing producer/performer El-P and the best rapper in the year 2013, Killer Mike. El-P produced the best hip hop record last year, Killer Mike’s R.A.P. Music, and apparently that was just the beginning for the duo.

Their style and tone differ pretty significantly, but Killer Mike & El-P complement each other perfectly. Michael Render spits aggressive fire and often dips into issues of race and politics, while Jaime Meline (El-P) keeps things more lighthearted and fun. Together they are a stronger force to be reckoned with — they’ve got a locked in Yin-Yang thing going on that is evident in their back-and-forth song structure lyrically. El-P helms the production, which incorporates a wide range of dance influences, vocally modulated repetition that morph into beats, and instrumentation that includes electric guitar and organ interludes.

Run The Jewels is getting rave reviews so far on the current tour. Expect to hear most of Run The Jewels, the name of their collaboration and first album, but also solo cuts off of Killer Mike’s R.A.P. Music & El-P songs like “Full Retard” and “Oh Hail No”.

Futurebirds are back in the Bay Area this Thursday following an excellent evening set at High Sierra Music Festival July 7. Born from the innovative musical hotbed that is Athens, Georgia, Futurebirds unleashed their second long player Baba Yaga April 16. Country-alt rock twisted with Southern sensibilities might be the first thing that’s noticeable when listening to their studio recordings. Since then they have been recording and touring at an unprecedented rate. Far from the cookie cutter hipster pretense associated with Echo Park, CA, Jonathan Bates brings his experimental electronic outfit Big Black Delta to the Bay Area this week. Bates’ musical background includes a stint as a lo-fi indie rock front man in Mellowdrone and bandmate of one of the most successful breakthrough acts of 2012, M83. Jonathan took to the road this past year in support of his debut self-titled album. The record dropped this past April, he is currently in the home stretch of his North American tour, rounding out the year with dates in the UK. Headlining the Independent this Friday, Bates brings his unique brand of darkly synthesized pop rock with support from San Francisco’s own, Breakdown Valentine. -Molly Kish

In a city she claims as her second home, soulful songstress Kelly McFarling will be celebrating the release of her second full length album, Ridgeline, this Friday at Brick and Mortar. Hailing from Atlanta, Georgia where she developed her vocal stylings in church choirs and baseball stadiums, McFarling has since traveled the world playing for sold out audiences on both local and international stages. She honed her skills as a singer, songwriter and self-taught banjo player during time spent in Bay Area recording studios and collaborating with fellow local artists. McFarling developed her sound as part of the San Francisco music community, and she was encouraged to perform on stage for the first time ever during an open mic at local venue Hotel Utah. Five years later, she’s become a staple within the folk rock scene of San Francisco and has gained the attention of national media outlets, various record labels and legions of adoring fans. -Molly Kish

Local up-and-comer Anya Kvitka and her band The GetDown will be co-headlining GAMH on Thursday, June 20th with Sacramento’s Jonny Craig, and they are both promising artists. Anya was at Slim’s recently, supporting Ryan Leslie, and she was a big hit. Anya Kvitka jumbles funk, hip hop, jazz and rock into tasty mix – be sure to check it out Thursday night!

Todd Anthony Shaw, better known by the stage name Too $hort, is a legendary local rapper who started his career at the age of fourteen in East Oakland. Too $hort has sold about 11 million albums in the US alone with 18 albums released and an average of 600,000 copies per album – enough said. Check this one out Friday.

Singer-Songwriter Eleanor Friedberger and her excellent backing band will be performing Saturday evening at The Independent. Half of the brother/sister duo The Fiery Furnaces, Friedberger is currently touring to support her second solo LP, Personal Record, which was just released June 4. The new album bathes in introspective 1970s-style pop, and as the record’s title indicates, the lyrical content is of the confessional, diary-entry variety. Friedberger’s solo material allows her gorgeous voice to shine more than her work with The Fiery Furnaces, and the songs are a bit more straightforward.

After turning heads earlier this year at SXSW, these grit-rockin’ locals will celebrate the release of their first LP Friday before heading out on the road in July. They will return to the City to play Outside Lands in August. Another excellent local artist, Sioux City Kid, will be offering featured support Friday.

Free Energy’s debut album Stuck on Nothing received top honors from both Pitchfork and Rolling Stone, and they aim to continue their artistic growth and push themselves further by hitting the road with their new material.

Crafting their music in homage to the great themes of rock and roll, Free Energy creates songs that transcend categorization and aim to speak to their audience in meaningful ways. As the group writes on their Soundcloud Page, Love Signs is an album that “should be played on a cassette deck in a Camaro screaming down the highway; stereo cranked, feather roach clip dangling from the rearview,” and the new LP will be a principle focus of their 2013 Summer Tour. So put on your wayfarers and cut off jean shorts – these boys came ready to rock!

Berlin-based DJ & electronic music producer The Field will be filling The Independent in San Francisco with his sultry, driving micro-house beats to help get the weekend started early. For those unfamiliar with the concept of ‘micro-house’ or ‘minimalist techno’, think ‘anti-drop’ dance music. The Field, aka Axel Willner, patiently builds dreamy soundscapes by micro-sampling shoe-gaze influenced pop music, and the end-result adds up to atmospheric, euphoric electronic music at its best. Willner is also an established remixer, producing official re-cut tracks for Battles, Thom Yorke, Delorean, DeVotchKa & Tame Impala to name a few.

Dake Earnhardt Jr. Jr. are in the midst of a mini-May tour, and the cheeky party-starters are gearing up for a couple shows on the west coast this week. The Independent in San Francisco is hosting the Detroit-based duo Friday May 17, and tickets are surprisingly still available. Their music is similar to the Yoshimi-era pop songs from The Flaming Lips, but with good live vocals, and their earnest dance-party jams are reminiscent of STRFKR.

Joshua Epstein & Daniel Zott blend harmonies, quirky electronic elements, and indie-folk influences to create a distinctive sound. Their live performances are as boldly irreverent and playful as their name, so seeing Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. Friday evening at The Independent looks like the right way to start the weekend.
