Delorean with Until The Ribbon Breaks //
The Independent – San Francisco
February 9th, 2014 //

There is no doubt that the past months have been a trying time for the Spanish dance-rock outfit which goes by the name Delorean. Alas, after a small international hiccup which sidelined their fall appearance in the City, they have arrived with momentum squarely on their side. Last weekend’s rain storm laid off a bit for dedicated fans to brave a blustery Sunday night on Dividisadero at the Independent which also featured fellow international act, Until the Ribbon Breaks. Once the moisture from outside had dried, a decently packed room was ready to send off the past week in grand style.

Welsh act Until the Ribbon Breaks brought a dynamic performance to those who arrived early, as solo artist Pete Lawrie Winfield explored a variety of aural spaces through complex layering of distorted vocal harmonies, dirty synths and even a little trumpet poured on for more depth of sound. This support was received well by those in attendance, and may possibly be a rising star in the music world.

Delorean

Delorean were finally due to hit the stage after a postponed show from October, and though those extra few months didn’t equate to a sold out room, it did produce a room of mostly avid fans. Once this four-piece assembled, it jumped into the group’s patented dance-leaning indie rock; a well-balanced blend of instrumentation, live vocals and a smattering of pre-recorded samples. From there, the set built nicely as the opening few songs failed to grab the audience as they worked through less familiar material. Unai Lazcano (keyboards) rocked his rig like no other while Ekhi Lopetegi (lead vocals, bass) picked along, laying down large bass notes as opposed to thumping out complex rhythms. Luckily, Igor Escudeo (drums) kept immaculate time, and a few song segues kept dancing feet in motion while the gears shifted to a new terrain.

As the diehard fans ate out of the Spaniard’s hands, others couldn’t help but not be fully pulled in by the songs this group presents. Some are less-than-desirable, while others have the right elements to get crowds moving and critics talking. The vocal department leaves a little to be desired at times. One peculiar element was the increasing use of pre-recorded vocal samples as the show progressed, and I couldn’t help but notice the mix tending to favor these elements over the instruments. “Deli” is when the energy started to peak as the crowd was loosened up for the heavy-hitters that were to close the night. By the time the encore had finished, there were multiple Basque flags being held up proudly by the international crowd as Delorean waved “adios” to us.

Working casually through the creative process with Delorean

Delorean1Photos by Pedro Paredes // Written by Molly Kish //

Barcelona-based four-piece electronic rock band Delorean were welcomed back to San Francisco on February 9th to enthusiastic fans as they played their makeup show from last year at The Independent.

Surviving a terrifying experience the night before their originally scheduled performance in September 2013, the Bay Area crowd was filled with anticipation for their return to the intimate venue. Regional Basque flags waved as the band nailed an energy-packed performance.

The band played songs spanning its past 14 years along with highlight tracks off its most recent full-length album Apar, keeping the crowd moving and elated throughout the entire performance.

Before the show, Showbams sat down with the band backstage to discuss the evolution of its sound, motivation and general serendipitous circumstances that has made Delorean the success story they are today.

Delorean2

Showbams: Delorean started out in 2000, released two albums and an EP with the band’s original members, and in 2007 reformed with Guillermo before relocating to Barcelona. At that time, your overall sound shifted from punk and electro to more computer-based compositions. Was this a conscious effort to separate yourselves from the old lineup or something that kind of just naturally happened?

Delorean: Well, it was something that we always wanted to achieve. We were also into electronic music and dance music and were always wondering about how we can achieve that sound. At the same time, we were also scared of using the computer, but when we started doing so, we realized that it was super easy and we were excited. It ended up being one of the main things that helped to shape and develop our sound. In all honesty, I don’t see that much of a difference. I think that if you put all our records in a timeline you can hear our development.

Delorean5

Showbams: During that time, the band started doing a lot more remixes, including songs from The xx, Cold Cave and Franz Ferdinand, which ended up bringing it to a larger audience internationally. Why did the band choose these artists to remix?

Delorean: It’s a mixture between us having some friends and getting the chance to remix some rarities that we liked and other artists who asked us to do remixes for them. Yeah, we were very lucky to be able to have worked with such big acts.

Showbams: Definitely! It also helped the band gain traction while evolving into the sound it currently has today. During all of this, you guys also ran a club night in Barcelona called Desparrame, with the idea to venture out beyond playing music and into event production?

Delorean: It was the idea of our friend, Kivo, who was our partner and friend in our blog and in that. Now it’s over though, we stopped doing the blog and the party. I’m (Igor) doing another party with him that’s similar — it’s called Calor — but we are super busy with the band, so we don’t pay that much attention to that. I mean it’s his thing and sometimes we DJ, but that’s it.

Delorean3

Showbams: Do you feel that involvement with such a scene back then helped you gain traction as a band or was it more just something fun you wanted to help out with as a side project?

Delorean: It was fun and at the same time, made the excitement around the band grow a little bit. We were not only a band, but there was also a party and people that we were in touch with and invite to the parties. I guess there was more excitement for the band then just us having an album, but we had other things happening at the same time. It’s actually not something that we decided that we wanted “to be like that.” It was just, at that time, we were involved in so many things: remixes, new material, the parties and all that. So yeah, I guess it made people be more interested.

Showbams: Around 2007, the band played at South by Southwest and shortly thereafter, it released Transatlantic KK, which was a variation of its second album Into the Plateau. What made the band want to re-release a version of that album instead of something completely new?

Delorean: Our previous two albums were only released in Spain and Europe, so this was going to be our first American release. We tried to do something special with the original track list and completely new artwork and decided to do that.

Delorean6

Showbams: In the years following 2007-09, the band released its second EP, toured with international artists jj and Miike Snow and landed a worldwide record distribution deal with the prolific New York-based True Panther Sounds, which also released your third studio album Subuiza. How did that partnership come about?

Delorean: We had friends in common and we … I don’t know, it happened very casually. We just had a lot of things and friends in common, and I think we were just all on the same page at that point in time. We were getting into things that were new for the both of us and were interested in the same things. We were friends with Dean and as we were writing the new material for Subuiza, we would show him the tracks and he would go like, “Oh, I like this one, I like that one,” making comments on the songs as they were being written. When the album was finished, we were like, “Hey Dean, do you want to put it out?” and he was like, “Yes,” so he just put it out. It was like we are friends and it just naturally worked out.

Delorean4

Showbams: The label is also the one that you remain on today, the one you released your fourth and most recent studio album Apar, which you currently are on tour supporting. You actually have been on tour for a while now due to a minor hangup while playing a festival in Mexico, which prevented the band from making its original date at The Independent due to being held hostage or “virtually kidnapped” on your way to San Francisco. Can you elaborate on the situation?

Delorean: What happened, it happened and we don’t like talking about it much. It’s just like a bad experience.

Showbams: Yeah, that’s scary.

Delorean: It was scary and bad and happened really fast. Afterward, we just went back home and stayed with our families. We’re very thankful for the people who helped us, but what we all think the best thing to do is not talk about Mexico and to keep on working. That’s pretty much what we do — you don’t want anything to stop you.

Delorean7

Showbams: At the end of this month, the band will be finishing its North American tour, during which it has been releasing a ton of guest DJ lists and new remixes. Are those a foreshadowing of the direction the band is going in or is there new material on the way as well?

Delorean: We’re working on new material and we did just put out a bunch of remixes and stuff, but I think it’s too early to say that I think it’s going to be the new sound or whatever. We’re just trying things and the more we work, the more clear we are on what the new direction is going to be. I don’t think those remixes can tell anybody anything because they still don’t tell us where they should go yet. But yes, we are doing new stuff!

Delorean with Until The Ribbon Breaks
The Independent — San Francisco
February 9, 2014 (Sunday) //

Back in the Bay Area to finally celebrate the release of their fourth studio album Apar, Barcelona’s own electro-alternative success story Delorean will be taking over the Independent Sunday night. After having to cancel a string of tour dates this past year whilst surviving a “virtual kidnapping” in Mexico City, Delorean have continued otherwise efficaciously on their North American tour. Amidst the unfortunate adversity, the band has “made good” on their promise of prolonging their album release party into a subsequent round of make-up dates and extended schedule on the road.

Gaining international fame with their contemporary pop remixes of The xx, Cold Cave and Franz Ferdinand, Delorean caught the attention of critics and fellow artists Miike Snow and jj with the release of their 2009 EP Aryton Sienna. After touring with their Swedish colleagues and hitting the worldwide festival circuit, Delorean signed to the seminal indie rock record label True Panther Sounds in 2010. There they have been enjoying a whirlwind career ever since, with the successful release of their third and fourth full lengths and an ambitious tour schedule promoting both. Bringing their infectiously ethereal dance rock to the main stage this Sunday night with the enthralling and multifaceted Until the Ribbon Breaks as an opener, Delorean makes their triumphant return to San Francisco for one of their most anticipated performances of the new year.

SF Beer Week Events + Close Shows = Best Week of the Year!

SF-Beer-Week_post

For beer lovers, San Francisco Beer Week is one of the finest weeks of the year. Okay, let’s be honest: It IS the best week of the year! So how can we make the best week of the year even better? By combining primo beer week events with great music.

These tastefully selected pairings have been curated specifically with the intention for you to enjoy a unique beer week offering and follow it up with a show within walking distance. That way, you can (responsibly) enjoy all the libations of your choosing and make it to the show safely. Beer will be flowing like the salmon of Capistrano all over San Francisco from February 8th through the 16th, and here are my picks for perfect beer and music matches:

Delorean

Date: Sunday, 2/9
Show: Delorean @ The Independent
Beer: Barleywine Night @ Noc Noc
Distance: 13 minute walk

Our first night will find you at the Noc Noc for their Barleywine night. If you’ve never had a barleywine, they’re big, bold, fruity, intense, and very high in alcohol. Sounds great, right? Noc Noc will be serving five in particular from Northern California Breweries, including Marin Brewing’s Old Dipsea and Sierra Nevada’s Barrel Aged Big Foot (don’t miss this one). When you’re done you can walk 13 minutes up Haight and down Divisadero to the Independent where you can hit Delorean. They’re a four piece combining dance music and indie pop who had to cancel their last show at the Independent due to being kidnapped in South America. Let’s hope they make it safely to the show this time. Hopefully everyone else that goes to Noc Noc makes it to the show safely, too, because I have my doubts after all that barleywine.

Oskar-Blues-Old-Chub

Date: Tuesday, 2/11
Show: Hospitality @ Rickshaw Stop
Beer: Oskar Blues Night @ The Beer Hall
Distance: 4 minute walk

If you’re in the mood for infectious indie pop and heady northern Colorado brews, buy your tickets for Hospitality right now (only $10!). The Beer Hall is hosting this stellar lineup of forward-thinking Oskar Blues and it’s only a four minute walk to Rickshaw Stop. Oskar Blues have been a pioneer in the craft canning movement, and for good reason. Cans are lighter (cheaper to transport), impermeable by light (stays headier longer), more easily recyclable, and they get cold faster. There won’t be any cans here though, as the offerings will be on tap, starring Oskar the Grouch (smoked IPA), Merlow BA Chaka (Belgian Strong Ale), and Old Chub ON NITRO. At the Rickshaw you’ll be ready to ingest Hospitality, this peppy stripped down trio has been on the rise for over a year now.

Coronado

Date: Wednesday, 2/12
Show: Boombox @ The Independent
Beer: Coronado Brewing Takeover @ Noir Lounge
Distance: 7 minute bus ride

Get your groove on and dance for a couple hours with Boombox at the Independent. Slinky, sultry, sexy strutting beats await you after your trip to the Noir Lounge for Coronado Brewing’s Tap Takeover. This California mainstay has been impressing craft beer lovers for a few years now but only recently has the brewery seen more of a national exposure. One sip of their Idiot IPA and you’ll realize why. Give it a try along with all of the other selections and then step on the 21 for a 7 minute bus ride up Hayes to the Independent.

Sierra-Nevada

Date: Friday, 2/14
Show: Blackalicious @ Slim’s
Beer: Sierra Nevada 62 Tap Takeover @ Zeitgeist
Distance: 13 minute walk

If you’re in the mood for some hip hop, Blackalicious is a must see on this Friday Valentine’s Day. It may not be the best for getting your romantic vibe on, but it’ll be great if you want to dance and shake your ass. And what else is better than shaking your ass with that special someone? Shaking your ass AND drinking beer! I’m straight up befuddled by the beer week listing this night at Zeitgeist: Sierra Nevada SIXTY-TWO TAP TAKEOVER. That’s not a typo. I was never even aware that they had 62 unique beers. We’ll see if this is some tomfoolery on 2/14. If it truly is 62 beers, you’d better believe the place will be loaded with hard to find rarities from the cellar. Supposedly they’re tapping the “extra special” kegs in the later afternoon/early night time, so if you hit this event before before you head to Slim’s you’ll be in good standing to sip on the best the brewery has to offer.

Bonus Pick!!!Because I have extra love for Valentine’s Day.

Date: Friday, 2/14
Show: Quilt @ Bottom of the Hill
Beer: Beer Tasting + Sweets @ Blueprint Tap Room
Distance: 15 minute walk

Maybe some gentle psych rock is more your style on the country’s most romantically manufactured holiday of the year. Quilt has made a big impression lately with their pseudo-sixties revival indie rock. While sometimes soothing in its swaying pop melodies, on occasion it necessitates a full-body psych rock freak-out. Blueprint Tap Room is doing a dessert and beer pairing that is making my mouth water as I type this. Coffee and chocolate bread pudding with salted caramel sauce will be paired with Anderson Valley’s fantastic Bourbon Barrel Stout, and olive oil citrus cake will be paired with Buzzerkeley’s Belgian Strong Pale Ale. And there are more pairings. There are also a wide variety of West Coast breweries being featured, such as Deschutes, Ninkasi, Lost Abbey, Ballast Point, Green Flash, and Calicraft. When it’s beer week, these guys and gals don’t come unprepared. There will be some really great beer getting tapped here.

Midnight-Sun

Date: Saturday, 2/15
Show: Jerry Garcia Band featuring Melvin Seals @ Great American Music Hall
Beer: Midnight Sun Brewery @ Amsterdam Cafe
Distance: 3 minute walk

Any night with the Jerry Garcia Band feat. Melvin Seals ends in a sweaty tired mess, and it’s great. It’s so soulful and cathartic that you’ll feel like you’re at church, but with only half the guilt. Midnight Sun is a brewery from Alaska that you may not have heard of, but they have been on point for years now. I’ve only been largely impressed with everything I’ve tried from them, and this beer lineup looks to be stacked with special releases. They’ve got a dark strong ale with spices and chilies, oak-aged T.R.E.A.T. (imperial chocolate pumpkin porter on nitro), and XXX-Black Double IPA. This pair is sure to impress – you’ll be having fun all the way through the midnight moonlight!
