EMA with Mas Ysa, Safeword //
The Independent – San Francisco
July 2nd, 2014 (Wednesday) //

The pervasive affective resonance of EMA’s music is intensity. Slow-tempoed, ominous drone is another characteristic that signifies Erika M. Anderson’s sound. It’s there in her career-making single “California” from her 2011 record Past Life Martyred Saints. This concept is continued with “Satellites”, the first track off of EMA’s new record The Future’s Void, but this time the brooding aura is set between vacillating white noise and deep bass. And just when you think you’ve got Anderson’s artistic direction pinned down, “So Blonde” wipes the board clean with a more traditional number. This one-two contrast to start EMA’s latest album shows an artist willing to shake things up and surprise your ears, something that should never be taken for granted. -Mike Frash
