After a long wait between albums, Mister Heavenly resurface at Resident DTLA

Resident DTLA – Los Angeles

In 2011, indie-rock supergroup Mister Heavenly dropped a stellar debut album titled Out of Love, went on a quick tour and disappeared. Comprised of Honus Honus (Man Man), Nick Thorburn (Islands, The Unicorns) and Joe Plummer (Cold War Kids), the band members of Mister Heavenly have been understandably busy.

Now six long years later, they’ve given us Boxing the Moonlight, another perky, deeply fun entry into the discography of doom wop. They brought the new album on the road and hit Resident DTLA, where they earned more than six years’ worth of praise from an eager and lively audience. Here’s hoping we won’t have to wait another six for the next one!

SF Show of the Week // GO4FREE to Tensnake at Mezzanine 9/11 (FRI)

September 11th, 2015 //

Marco Niemerski, better known by his stage name Tensnake, emerged from the disco-ball spotlight in 2010 with his hit single “Coma Cat”, which has since appeared in more than 50 compilations. Born in Hamburg circa 1975, the sounds of disco, boogie, soul, funk and of course 80’s pop all contribute to the groovy reverberations of this German DJ and producer.

In 2014, still celebrating the success of “Coma Cat”, Tensnake released his debut full-length album Glow featuring collaborations with Fiora, Jacques Lu Cont, MNEK and Nile Rodgers, among others. The album received favorable reviews, especially for the choice to include Fiora in almost half of its tracks.

This Friday, Niemerski will bring his luscious 80’s disco hooks to SF’s Mezzanine with Plastic Plates, Slaptop and The Split providing support. You can buy tickets for $25, or you could win a pair of tickets by registering your full name and email below.

Contest ends this Friday at 3 p.m.

Enter your name and email address below for the chance to win 2 free tickets.

Philadelphia experimental group Man Man will bring their unique brand of “Viking vaudeville, maniac gypsy jazz” to Great American Music Hall Tuesday (Oct. 1) and Wednesday (Oct. 2). Comprised of four pseudonym donning members (Honus Honus, Pow Pow, Shono Murphy, Brown Sugar, & Jamey!), these multi instrumentalists are known for their exuberant live shows, off the wall stage presence and theatrical costumes — including individually detailed war paint and accessories.

Man Man has opening for headliners such as Modest Mouse and Yeasayer, product placed in Nike ads, placed sound on Showtime’s former hit Weeds and most recently the group was mentioned on CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360 — Man Man has been on the cusp of commercial fame since their start in 2003. Their latest album On Oni Pond, produced by Mike Mogis of Bright Eyes and First Aid Kit fame, released last month and delivers a more focused reconstruction of the band’s eclectic sound and all around creative reboot. Melding disparate sounds drawn from classic soul, hip hop, rock, new wave and psychedelic pop influences, Man Man’s fifth album ventures into a fearless territory described as a “beautifully weird and unforgettable collection of songs.”

To witness the live spectacle that is Man Man, throw your name in the hat below the fold.
