WIN TICKETS: Albert Hammond Jr. at Slim’s 11/21

Hammond_post

Hot off the release of his solo EP on fellow bandmate Julian Casablanca’s Cult Records label, Strokes guitarist and keyboardist Albert Hammond Jr. will be headlining Slim’s this Thursday night! On tour promoting AHJ, the third release outside of his work with the iconic New York five piece, Hammond Jr. will be taking over SF’s gritty little rock club with opener Rathborne.

Filled with his signature guitar riffs and pristinely belting vocals, AHJ effortlessly delivers a polished, hook-laden collection of pop bliss compositions.

WIN TICKETS: Anna Calvi at the Indy 11/17

anna-calvi_post

British singer/songwriter Anna Calvi will bring her unique brand of ominous tango to the Independent this Sunday. Known for her beautiful yet tragic vocals and intensely masterful guitar playing, Calvi’s talent has attracted attention from fans worldwide as she embarks on a worldwide tour through Spring 2014.

Releasing her self-titled debut in 2011 on Domino Records, Calvi impressed the masses, including her mentor and album-background vocalist Brian Eno. After winning accolades from the European press and receiving award nominations, including the Mercury Music Prize, Calvi hit the ground running. She returns to the Bay this weekend celebrating the release of her second full length, One Breath. Drawing inspiration from composer John Adams, Steve Reich and hours choral music immersion, Calvi recorded her latest work in just six weeks. Focusing the running theme of “One Breath” relates to the act of opening oneself up and embracing the exhilaration and fear that can often produce ambiguous outcomes — Calvi’s fearlessness as a performer reverberates throughout.

Her live show is lauded for echoing cinematic overtones and offering an operatic-based motif, so commit to spending a hauntingly lovely Sunday evening with Anna Calvi. Register below for your chance to win tickets, courtesy of Showbams.

Alternative Tentacles is celebrating their 33 and 1/3 years anniversary, and you have the chance to join the party for free. Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School of Medicine will serve as this odd ball’s headliner, along with some hand-selected support from Jello’s label. The former Dead Kennedy’s frontman is still kicking out the jams and has been feverishly touring this crazy world stirring the pot and making controversy in his wake.

This is not just your average night of political-stained punk anthems, as the psychobilly legend Mojo Nixon will be bucking retirement once again to grace the Slim’s stage with Jello. Formed by musical married couple Jace Lasek and Olga Goreas, The Besnard Lakes deal in moody ambiance through their floaty instrumentals and modulated harmonies. The Canadian indie group tours as a foursome, and they’ll be blasting away at Brick & Mortar Music Hall Thursday, November 14.

They are on the road in support of Until in Excess, Imperceptible UFO, their fourth full length album, which has been nominated for the 2013 Polaris Music Price (the Canadian version of the UK’s Mercury Prize). WIN TICKETS: Thundercat at the Indy 11/13

Thundercat_post

Stephen Bruner, popularly known as Thundercat, is a rather prolific contemporary musician and producer. Many folks might not be aware that he joined the legendary punk band Suicidal Tendencies at the age of 16, and later went on to perform and record with Erykah Badu, Snoop Dogg and Stanley Clarke. This bass player had really made a name for himself before trying his hand at electronic-funk production, eventually joining forces with similarly talented musician, Flying Lotus, and joining his stellar label, Brainfeeder.

Now is the time that Thundercat is truly stepping out on his own and turning heads with his infectious style of funk-jazz playing coupled with soaring production to create a monstrously groovy sound. His latest release Apocalypse dropped to glowing reviews across the board, and his live show only ups the ante. A banner set at Coachella in 2012 began to set him apart, and comparisons to Bootsy Collins were hard to dismiss. Bass Player Magazine presents Thundercat with opening support by Real Magic and the Seshen on Wednesday, November 13th at the Independent. Why not make hump day a little more funky?

WIN TICKETS: The Budos Band at Mezzanine 11/9

Budos_post

The Budos Band will be upon you Saturday at Mezzanine in San Francisco if good times are meant to be had. Various members of the ensemble may look familiar, as some of these funkified musicians also perform with Antibalas, Menahan Street Band and Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings amongst others. Frequently labeled afro-soul, Budos Band have traditionally built cool grooves from elements of jazz, soul & funk through driving percussion and melodies provided by snazzy brass & woodwind work.

It’s been a solid three years since Budos released new material, but according to SF Weekly, the show at Mezzanine Saturday will witness a slew of new material that will be on their upcoming fourth LP, Black Sabbath. In the SF Weekly interview, sax player Jared Tankel said, “We want to take our increased influence from ’70s rock and make that work for Budos, but maybe not with as much of the Afrobeat thing or Ethiopian jazz thing that really shined through in the earlier records.”

Tankel also added the group has “10 solid songs tracked. The majority of work is done, we just need the final push so we have the best stuff there.” Considering the show at Mezzanine Saturday is the only live appearance the Budos Band have on calendar, expect a one-off treat to soundtrack your Saturday night. Hell, this show Saturday may be the barometer they need for the final push.

Afrolicious and Motion Potion will be at Mezzanine to get things started early.

WIN TICKETS: Rubblebucket at the New Parish 11/7

Rubblebucket

It’s been a harrowing three months for Rubblebucket and singer Kalmia Traver. The group has been touring much of the year, and the group released their Save Charlie EP in October, but Kal was shockingly diagnosed with Stage 1 ovarian cancer in July. Traver has undergone chemotherapy, and in her interview with Seven Days, she said, “I get sick for about a week straight and then pop out of it and feel great.” The group is continuing to tour around Traver’s treatment, and her commitment to music and touring is apparent and inspiring. Traver continued, “Performing live is such a source of energy in my life, I didn’t want to put that on the back burner.”

Rubblebucket will perform Thursday September 7th at the New Parish in Oakland, so consider attending this funky, psyched-out dance show. The group has a sound and look that is all their own, embracing a neon visual aesthetic with their full brass section. Their upbeat, breezy music can’t be pigeon-held to one genre — how many acts mash the frequencies that come from horns and synths?

No plans on Halloween yet? Well, Showbams has got your back with the chance to win a pair of tickets to see the “transcendental folk” act that goes by the name of Elephant Revival at the Independent. These ultra-taleneted Coloradans mash up an impressive amalgamation of string music with influences that range from Celtic to reggae to even contemporary hip-hop. Even more impressive is that Elephant Revival share all the duties on stage equally as all members are well accomplished musicians that regularly switch instruments and all tackle vocal duties.

Allie Kral and the Morrison Brothers will handle the opening slot on this celebratory evening. Many may recognize the name of Allie Kral, as she was a founding member of popular bluegrass act, Cornmeal. However, she has now branched off and is making waves with a new band.
