Futurebirds are one of the most dynamic groups to emerge out of the Athens, Georgia music scene in some years. Touring on 2013’s Baba Yaga, almost every song played pays off by transforming into a Neil Young-like slow burning jam, webbing and flowing in intensity thanks to layered, steel pedal-tinged guitar goodness. Futurebird’s music is rooted in alternative country, yet it pleasantly sound-shifts into psych-rock territory. Get on this show for a laid back, Southern-swaying evening.

Kicking off San Francisco’s 13th Annual Sketchfest, character actor and comedian David Koechner will be headlining this Saturday at Independent with back to back performances at 8 and 10pm. Graduate of the Chicago ImprovOlympic and alum of both Saturday Night Live and Late Night With Conan O’Brien, Koechner has had an illustrious career spanning both the small and large screen over the past 20 years. Gaining traction in the late nineties on the national improv circuit with his stage act The Naked Trucker and T-Bones Show, Koechner and SNL cast mate David Gruber took on festival stages and concert halls throughout the country touring with fellow comedic duo Tenacious D. Shortly after he landed his breakthrough role alongside the ensemble cast in 2004’s Anchorman as the boisterously chauvinistic sports reporter Champ Kind, Koechner started his tenure on the silver screen. He’s played roles in several high profile comedies, provided voice over for full length animated features and has been featured in recurring roles on the network television series The Office and American Dad!

FEADZ with Phantoms, Richie Panic
Neck of the Woods – San Francisco
January 16, 2014

French DJ, Producer and Songwriter FEADZ otherwise known as Fabien Pianta, has been heating up dance floors for well over a decade. Collaborating with fellow electronic mastermind and current Ed Banger label mate Mr. Oizo, FEADZ broke onto the scene in 99’ with his debut album Analog Worms Attack. Shortly after a co-headlining world tour, the multi-faceted Pianta joined German electro label BPitch, released his first solo record and began working as a producer and collaborating with fellow industry heavyweights. Most notably his work with seminal vocalist Uffie garnished the attention of the owner and founder of Ed Banger Records, Busy P. His production credit on the 2005 breakout track, “Pop The Glock,” led to his signing by the French Electro magnate and major label release of three EP’s and a full length album, dropping later this month. Coming out January 20th, Instant Alpha showcases FEADZ unique blend of hip-hop and chiptune electronica. Stamped with Ed Banger’s stylistic markers of vocal compression and low end sampling, the album highlights FEADZ roots in freestyle, house and unique perspective as an innovator on the turntables.

Parquet Courts and White Fence
Great American Music Hall – San Francisco
January 16, 2014

Hold on, and hope to win, as Parquet Courts and White Fence team up for a series of shows out West highlighting two of rocks most exciting acts. Honestly, this pairing is sheer brilliance as NYC’s Parquet Courts return to California with their sneering take on garage-leaning punk rock. On the other hand, Tim Presley’s White Fence demonstrates preternatural mastery of all things psychedelic rock; from the jangle-fuzz of Presley’s guitar solos to his sneering, British-leaning vocals, it all fits so damned well. San Francisco rising star’s CCR Headcleaner will open the night in a loud, raucous manner as they have for years across this town, and with a debut release, Lace the Earth With Arms Wide Open, under their belts. The relentless touring force that is the Dead Winter Carpenters are pulling their bus into San Francisco this weekend to celebrate the release of their latest EP entitled Dirt Nap. 2013 was a huge year for the Tahoe natives as they criss-crossed the country, recorded new material and won new fans night by night. The Independent hosts DWC along with local support from Sleeping Giants and American Nomad on Friday, January 10th. Fans of rootsy americana music with a pulse are sure to pay attention to these rising stars.

Dirt Nap was released just a few weeks ago as a ‘pay what you want’ release, and features six songs of the acts patented outlaw alt-country along with an impressive guest spot by the likes of Pete Grant(Grateful Dead, Willie Nelson) on steel pedal. Some personnel changes over the past year has lent to the growth of Dead Winter Carpenters as Bryan Daines’ honky-tonk inspired guitar playing continue to marvel. Though with these changes, DWC has kept true to something entirely unique as they craft the 21st century sound of California roots music.

WIN TICKETS: Beware of Darkness at Café du Nord 12/21

Beware of Darkness

Beware of Darkness with Happy Fangs & Down and Outlaws //
Café du Nord – San Francisco
December 21st, 2013 //

Are you ready to be thoroughly entertained by the rock and roll fury that goes by Beware of Darkness? Well, Showbams has got your chance to win tickets to their Cafe du Nord show this upcoming weekend. With a driving sound that beckons to 90s alternative grunge scene with a pinch of modern garage and even glam metal. Basically, Beware the Darkness is a pumping amalgamation of rock styles with an undeniable stage show to back it all up.

Having cut their teeth manning opening slots for Social Distortion and the Wombats began to gain this trio attention in the southern part of California. The release of their debut LP, Orthodox, on Bright Antenna Records led to not one, but two jarring singles, “Howl” followed by “All Who Remain”. Solid airplay on alternative radio eventually led to a performance on Conan not too long thereafter, and they continue to turn heads and amass devote fans. This all leads to the energy that they display on the live stage; Kyle Nicolaides (vocals, guitar), Daniel Curcio (bass guitar) and Tony Cupito (drums) bring energy in all that they do. We assure you that Beware the Darkness will not disappoint if looking to get out and don your favorite Christmas leather jacket this Saturday night.

WIN TICKETS: The Mowgli’s at Slim’s 12/7

Mowglis_post

Southern California eight piece folk rock outfit The Mowgli’s will be bringing their sun-kissed sound to the Slim’s stage in SF this weekend. Started by a close knit group of friends in a San Fernando Valley garage, the band preaches the message of unity and togetherness through the bond of artistic collaboration. Drawing influences from indie pop, country, classic rock and all genres in between, the Mowgli’s harness California coast vibes to deliver their musical message in a most uplifting way.

Compared to the group dynamics of modern ensembles such as Arcade Fire and Broken Social Scene and finding similarities in positively charged melodies of Cults and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, the Mowgli’s set out to win over their audiences by “making love with music” (and a fair amount of handclaps). Signing to and releasing their debut album Get Sharp on Dangerbird records in 2010, the band gained international attention with singles “Very Busy People” and “Internet Killed the Video Star.” Featured as an artist on MTV’s Push Week and touring as an opener for The Sounds and Neon Trees brought the Bay Area locals unique brand of dance rock to audiences on a global scale. Nashville rock foursome Mona had an equally rapid rise to fame when after simply two years of playing together, they were signed to Island and Mercury Records after nailing an online introduction to Nude Records founder and band manager Saul Galpern in 2010. That November, the band appeared on the BBC’s Later…with Jules Holland and we’re nominated for an MTV Music Award. In 2011 Mona released their self-titled debut in Europe, spending most of the following year playing large scale festivals such as Glastonbury, Reading and Leeds, Splendor in the Grass and more gaining traction overseas. They also headlined their own tour that summer, culminating in a sold out show in London’s O2 Arena. They brought their debut album to the states in 2012, performing on nationally syndicated late night talk shows and supporting Noel Galagher’s High Flying Birds side project.
