HARD Summer Music Festival changes locations, moves back to two days in 2023 with Kaskade B2B John Summit, Skrillex B2B Four Tet

HARD Summer Music Festival - 2023 lineup

HARD Summer Music Festival //
LA Memorial Coliseum, Exposition Park & BMO Stadium – Los Angeles
August 5th-6th, 2023 //

If you thought Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival delivered a big splash by releasing its 2023 lineup to celebrate the 15-year mark this August, HARD Summer is making its own noise just hours later.

After extending to three days in 2022, the annual Southern California music festival is moving back to two with a brand-new location and a stacked roster that once again favors electronic and hip-hop fans.

While a variety of SoCal venues — Whittier Narrows Recreation Area, the Fairplex in Pomona and Auto Club Speedway in Fontana — have played host to HARD Summer over the years, the fest’s latest home for the past two had been the NOS Events Center in San Bernardino. But HARD founder and CEO Gary Richards has always had his sights set on returning to LA since leaving the city’s limits following its 2013 edition at the previous iteration of LA State Historic Park.

Now, the event will migrate 63 miles west to the LA Memorial Coliseum, Exposition Park and BMO Stadium with Kaskade B2B John Summit and Skrillex B2B Four Tet tapped as headliners, plus two special guests in 21 Savage and Kid Cudi.

This year’s undercard, meanwhile, isn’t too shabby either, littered with more B2B sets and other huge names that include Diplo B2B Blond:ish, Black Coffee, Kayzo B2B Sullivan King, Oliver Tree, Gorgon City, Yellow Claw B2B Flosstradamus, Dillon Francis, Deorro, The Martinez Brothers, Jungle (DJ set), Bicep (Live), 4B B2B JSTJR, TBA B2B Sonny Fodera, Diesel, Ludacris, Peekaboo, Fat Joe and more. Check out the poster above for the rest of acts who have been booked.

GA and VIP passes are on sale this Friday, March 10th at 10 a.m. PT here for fans ages 18 and over, with payment plans also available for single-day or weekend tickets after a $9.95 deposit.

HARD Summer Music Festival - updated 2023 lineup

UPDATE (May 1st): With more than four months to go until showtime, HARD Summer has uncovered a handful of 2023 lineup additions that sees MK B2B Sonny Fodera, Yung Bae, PAWSA, Rochelle Jordan and nøll joining the party this August in downtown LA. Scope out the poster above for the latest updates to the roster and sign up for the SMS hotline here to receive first access to tickets, lineups and more via text message.

HARD Summer Music Festival 2023 - Saturday set times

HARD Summer Music Festival 2023 - Sunday set times

UPDATE (August 2nd): Set times are here, and while there’s a whole lot to choose from, there’s also some tough decisions to make after 9 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. Give the schedules above a good look before leaving for Exposition Park this weekend, and most importantly, have a great time!

HARD Summer Music Festival extends to three days in 2022 with Megan Thee Stallion, Lil Uzi Vert & Porter Robinson atop the bill

Hard Summer Music Festival - 2022 lineup

HARD Summer Music Festival //
NOS Events Center – San Bernardino, CA
July 29th-31st, 2022 //

If you thought Gary Richards was bold after dropping a 2021 lineup for HARD Summer while we were still in the throes of the COVID-19 pandemic, the HARD founder and CEO isn’t letting up now.

This time, he’s adding a third day for the annual Southern California music festival that returns late July to the NOS Events Center in San Bernardino after moving all around the greater Los Angeles area over the last few years — whether it was Whittier Narrows Recreation Area in South El Monte, the Fairplex in Pomona or Auto Club Speedway in Fontana.

HARD Summer has long leaned in the electronic direction given Richard’s pedigree as a DJ, but it has incorporated more and more hip-hop acts since 2015 and the 14th edition follows in the same vein with Megan Thee Stallion, Lil Uzi Vert and Porter Robinson sitting atop the bill.

Meanwhile, plenty of other big names throughout the undercard are also worth calling out, such as Joji, Alison Wonderland, Chris Lake, Zeds Dead B2B Subtronics, GRiZ, Madeon, Gunna, NGHTMRE, Marc Rebillet, Tchami, Denzel Curry, Jai Wolf, 100 Gecs and more. Peep the poster above for the rest of this year’s roster.

GA, GA+ and VIP passes are on sale this Friday, May 6th at 10 a.m. PT here for fans ages 18 and over, with payment plans also available for one-day or three-day tickets after a $9.95 deposit.

Anyone ready to go HARD this summer?

Shlohmo takes his SF fans at Mezzanine for a spin

ShlohmoBy Lisette Worster //

Mezzanine – San Francisco
March 26th, 2016 //

Shlohmo’s headlining show in SF last Saturday proved to be an intimate event co-presented by Mezzanine and concert subscription-based app Jukely.

To kick off the night, local DJs ChaunceyCC and Marco de la Vega played back-to-back sets, leading into a hip-hop-fueled performance by Dj Dials before it was Shlohmo’s turn to take the stage.

As soon as Shlohmo (born Henry Laufer) jumped on the decks, the mood shifted to a dark red, much like when we watched him perform his first live band tour in his native Los Angeles last year (see more photos from the show here). With the venue packed from the front to the back, Shlohmo played everything from his original tracks to even some Lil B.

Best known for his hit song “Harlem Shake”, Harry Bauer Rodrigues (aka Baauer) bounced around the world during his adolescent years before his family settled in Connecticut and he began producing dance music at the age of 13. Baauer started making a name for himself in 2012 while remixing well-known artists, from Nero and Flosstradamus to No Doubt and First Aid Kit. After signing with LuckyMe records, he received critical acclaim for “Harlem Shake”, winning “Dance Song of the Year” and “EDM Song of the Year” at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards.

This Friday, Djemba Djemba and DJ Dials will warm up the crowd at Mezzanine before Baauer unleashes his booty-poppin’ builds and drops that we have come to know and love over the past few years. San Francisco City Hall Centennial Celebration //
City Hall — San Francisco
June 19th, 2015 //

This Friday, SF City Hall celebrates its 100th anniversary in euphonious fashion. Ringing in its centennial year, The Hellman Family and San Francisco Giants co-chair a symphonic tribute to the rich culture and history of the SF music scene over the past 100 years.

The celebration will take place on two stages in the Civic Center Plaza, as emcee Ben Fong Torres shares the spotlight with musical director/savant Chuck Prophet and an eclectic lineup of both locally curated and globally recognized talent. A thematic program, highlighting some of SF’s most iconic anthems, will be performed live by a full band, choir, classical string octet and horns section. Paying homage to the diverse range of musical influence the SF music scene has become known for over the past 10 decades, performers include Sun Kil Moon vocalist/guitarist Mark Kozelek, Vetiver singer-songwriter Andy Cabic, former Dead Kennedys lead singer/songwriter Jello Biafra, singer Lavay Smith, singer-songwriter/producer/musician Tim Bluhm, singer-songwriter Kelly Stoltz and more.

San Francisco City Hall - projection

Obscura Digital will be debuting its brand-new projection system at the celebration.

Aside from the live entertainment on both stages, HUSHconcerts will be on site with their HUSHcast silent disco lineup, including DJ Apollo, DJ Dials, Motion Potion and several others from the Bay Area’s electronic elite. The plaza itself will be transformed into a carnival of delight with Anon Events’ roaming droves of circus performers, side-show entertainers, contortionists, sword swallowers, interactive art installations, a light sculpture garden, a children’s wonderland and an after-dark cabaret of exotic stage performances, burlesque and LED light dancers.

Obscura Digital will be displaying its brand-new projection system, which is set up to cast light and images on City Hall’s facade year round, at 9:30 p.m. sharp. Aimed to “take the audience on a visual and creative journey through the history and stories behind the building,” the light show is two years in the making and looks to make City Hall an active installation and dynamic piece of public art.

The celebration is free and open to the public from 6-11 p.m. For more information, please visit sfcityhall100.com.

Les Sins get The New Parish grindin’

Les SinsPhotos by Justin Yee // Written by Molly Kish //

Les Sins with DJ Cali, DJ Dials //
The New Parish – Oakland
February 26th, 2015 //

Chaz Bundick is a man of many monikers. Known best as the “chillwave” movement ambassador and talent behind Toro y Moi, he also has ventured out into the world of experimental electronic music as both Sides of Chaz and Les Sins. Last week as part of the Noise Pop 2015 roster, the Bay Area was treated to a rare, live Les Sins set at one of Oakland’s most intimate venues, The New Parish.

Supported by opening acts DJ Cali and DJ Dials, Bundick delivered a late-night performance on the venue’s main stage for a sold-out, Thursday night crowd. While it was kind of a mixed bag as far as the attendance went, the audience took a minute to warm up to what most definitely wasn’t a simple Toro y Moi DJ set. Something Bundick had alluded to in the Noise Pop “Song Exploder” podcast earlier that day, Les Sins have always meant to be a completely separate project in which Bundick can explore obscure electronic soundscapes without alienating his Toro y Moi fan base.

Les Sins

Delving into funky, house-driven tracks off his 2014 release Michael, Bundick had the audience either feeling compelled to nervously check their watches and reconsider their weeknight curfew or giving into Les Sins’ infectious grooves. Many of those in attendance couldn’t help but indulge in Bundick’s quirky, trip-hop samples, soulful piano riffs and R&B synth hooks, filling out the dance floor while some crowd members even found their way onstage.

Not even taking the stage until about 11:30 p.m., the show was intentionally scheduled for the late-night music fan. Once those who were committed settled into their dance space, the venue exploded into a funky house party that extended into the early a.m. hours. Intermingling his own material with disco classics, 90’s pop jams and dirty trap beats, Bundick had the crowd on fire and easily could have prolonged the party well into the after hours had there been the option to do so. And by ending the evening with “Working,” the lead single off of Les Sins’ 2014 full length, he really had the venue raring for more by the end of his set.

Although Les Sins haven’t alluded to any new material coming out this year, fans of Bundick will be able to catch him on tour as Toro y Moi starting at the end of this month with a new album dropping on April 7th. But knowing this man’s proclivity to keeping himself creatively occupied, something tells me it won’t be too long before he gives us another taste of his electronic expansion.

Scottish DJ/producer Russell Whyte, aka Rustie, has been touring the world of late in support of his second full-length album Green Language, which dropped back in August on Warp Records. Hitting the decks at the early age of 15, Whyte first made a name for himself by producing tracks for Detroit rapper Danny Brown, including his latest single “Attak”, and has only continued his rise in the EDM world. With the “Green Language Live” tour marking his largest to date, the Glasgow native made a mid-week stop in the City and captivated the crowd at The Independent with the help of A-Rock’s 3D visuals. Marc Fong was on hand to capture these shots from the show, which featured opening sets from Nadus and DJ Dials.

Snakehips consummate steamy sold-out set at The Indy

SnakehipsPhotos by Justin Yee // Written by Molly Kish //

Snakehips with DJ Dials, Mikos Da Gawd //
The Independent – San Francisco
January 9th, 2015 //

UK production duo Snakehips rocked a sold-out crowd last Friday night at The Independent with their signature glitchy beats and sample-heavy, half-sped house grooves.

Supported by opening sets from Mikos Da Gawd and a humbly apologetic DJ Dials, the packed venue was antsy to get their swerve on with the London outfit in the building. Although faced with technical difficulties, DJ Dials made the best of the situation by warming the crowd up with a personally-curated playlist of 90’s hip-hop and R&B. Ending his set somewhat abruptly due to issues with his equipment, he made a classy exit, apologizing for the mishap and letting Snakehips take the reigns the rest of the way.

Snakehips’ Oliver Lee and James Carter, in the meantime, wasted no time, breaking into their 2014 remix of Raury’s “Cigarettes”, which whipped the crowd into a sultry sing-along as fans bounced along to the duo’s downtempo take on the soul/pop ballad. With little stage production to offer, Snakehips kept their set focused directly on the music. Instead, entertaining the crowd with their onstage chemistry and a backdrop screen that simply displayed their moniker, Snakehips pulled material from several mixtapes and sprinkled in some of their own individually-released remixes, too.

Snakehips

A jammed-packed, steam-filled room broke out into a frenzy on several occasions throughout the evening, responding most passionately to the duo’s remixes of Wild Belle’s “It’s Too Late” and The Weeknd’s “Wanderlust” as well as their brand-new track “On & On”, which features Australian vocalist George Maple.

As Snakehips gear up for what undoubtedly will be a heavily-booked festival season this spring and summer, it was quite a treat to catch Lee and Carter in such an intimate setting. With talk of a debut album making the rounds and several of their mixes finding their way onto music blogs like Hypetrak and British radio stations like BBC Radio 1, Snakehips definitely should be returning to the Bay Area in the near future.

If you slept on their show this time around, do yourself a favor and keep yourself informed about their next U.S. tour. At the pace these two are escalating up the dance charts, you wouldn’t want to let them slither past you a second time around.

Hudson Mohawke with DJ Dials
Rickshaw Stop — San Francisco
Friday May 30th, 2014 //

You’ve likely heard the blistering production work of Hudson Mohawke, even if you aren’t aware of it. This Scottish-bred prodigy has been making waves since the tender age of 15 in his native homeland before catching the attention of some heavy hitters in the industry. HudMo cut his teeth in the underground scene, smashing barriers and pushing the envelope before being picked up by Warp Records, and later Kanye’s G.O.O.D. Music. Before this all, he was involved with the formation of a massively respected label, LuckyMe, alongside visionaries like Martyn. Basically, the guy is light years ahead of the curve.

He has collaborated with a cornucopia of the 21st century’s most forward-thinking beat producers including Rustie, Lunice (as TNGHT) and Mike Slott (as Heralds of Change), pushing him into the upper echelon of coveted producers that many MCs hope to work with. You may be familiar with his furious work alongside Daft Punk in the production of Kanye mega-hit, “I Am God”. With a rap sheet that makes most producers envious, Mohawke has decided to grace San Francisco with a rare, solo show in a rather intimate space, the Rickshaw Stop. Local badman, DJ Dials will offer support to this sold out evening of progressive futurism.

Mezzanine — San Francisco
May 10th, 2014 (Saturday) //

Virtuoso bassist and intergalactic funk pilot Thundercat, born Stephen Bruner, offers a different experience live in concert compared to his records. Bruner’s impressive studio cuts are tightly produced, full of impressive standard-length tracks. But on tour, expect Thundercat to delve into improvisation with an exploratory vision.

As we reported last year when Thundercat visited San Francisco, “Though the songs are stellar, it was musicianship that was the headline for this evening. The arrangements were very complex and masterfully played as the majority of those in attendance were more into gawking at the chops than moving their dancing feet.” Experience the talents of this emerging artist Saturday at Mezzanine.

NOISE POP 2014

Mezzanine — San Francisco
February 27nd, 2014 (Thursday) //

Ghostly International artist and admitted synth-obsessed Com Truise will be hitting the stage this Thursday night as part of the Noise Pop Festival 2014 festivities! New York native Seth Haley has been making “mid-fi synth wave, slow motion funk” for over a decade now, and under several pseudonyms (Sarin Sunday, SYSTM, Airliner). Taking on the moniker Com Truise in 2010, Haley debuted his saturated synth-wave nostalgia-based EP Cyanide Sisters for free on the label AMdiscs. He followed this up with an armada of high profile remixes, a series of eclectic podcasts titled Komputer Cast and a self-released single, “Pyragony/Trypyra”.

Catching the attention of current label Ghostly International, Haley got signed and reissued the Cyanide Sisters EP in 2011, released his debut full-length Galactic Melt and follow up EP Fairlight that summer and had a remix of his appear on the Tron: Legacy Reconfigured album all in the same year.

2012 brought about the release of his second full length In Decay, even more remixes for Grammy Award winning artists, festival appearances and extensive international touring in support of his arrival on the Ghostly International roster.

His fourth EP WAVE 1 dropped less than one week ago and is being self-described as a “Prince meets space travel” concept piece. For your chance at a first-hand listen to the new material, along with a stellar line up of supporting acts Phantoms, Kauf and DJ Dials, register below to win.

Ryan Hemsworth is a name to watch as he climbs the ranks of an increasingly populated landscape of producers and digital oriented musicians. Luckily, he has been at it for a few years transitioning from a singer and guitarist to a less-analog production platform where he crafts hip-hop and R&B tracks. This well-adapted Canadian featured some high profile remix efforts for artists such as Frank Ocean, Danny Brown and Cat Power, to name a few.
