• Mirah: November 9th (SUN) @ The Independent
• Lagwagon: November 9th (SUN) @ Slim’s

Daedelus: November 7th (FRI) @ Mezzanine // BUY TICKETS

Alfred Darlington is a producer and instrumentalist (he holds his keyboard for proof in his press shot!) that isn’t afraid of duality. Just look at his 2014 record The Light Brigade, a contemplative work that balances ambiance and moments of intensity, then compare it to his upbeat, raucous live Boiler Room set from a year ago (embedded above). This prodigious music maker isn’t afraid to take the listener on a journey based in weirdness, and I mean weird in a very good way — think along the lines of Flying Lotus and Animal Collective.

Contest ends Friday, November 7th at Noon.

Mirah: November 9th (SUN) @ The Independent // BUY TICKETS

Brooklyn-based singer and songwriter Mirah is kicking off a West Coast tour this weekend, making a Sunday night stop at The Indy. Touring in support of Changing Light, her fifth full length, Mirah’s experimental pop traverses a musical landscape that explores existence and the ever-changing nature of life. Sounds like a deep way to start a new week!

Contest ends Friday, November 7th at Noon.

Lagwagon: November 9th (SUN) @ Slim’s // BUY TICKETS

Lagwagon was one of my favorite acts when I first discovered punk rock in the mid 90’s, and the Fat Wreck Chords staple from SoCal has been putting music in its place for over 20 years. Even though the touring has never stopped, Lagwagon’s first album in nine years, Hang, was just unleashed last week. End your weekend with some scorching melodic punk that never got soft (we’re looking at you Blink).

Contest ends Friday, November 7th at Noon.

SF Show of the Week // GO4FREE to Courtney Barnett & San Fermin at Slim’s 11/3 (MON)

courtney-barnett_postPhoto by Pedro Paredes // Written by Mike Frash //

Courtney Barnett & San Fermin with Mikhael Paskalev //
Slim’s — San Francisco
November 3rd, 2014 //

We’ve got a tasty co-headlining show for you this Monday in SF at Slim’s. Enter your name below to win a free pair of tickets to this show.

Courtney Barnett has a pretty unique angle on the whole singer/songwriter concept. Deadpan lyrical delivery and post-grunge elements over surf rock sounds smack you on the surface, but it’s the stream-of-conscious-inspired songwriting that bounces around in your brain long after listening.

Take for example “Avant Gardner”, one of the best songs of 2014. Like the exposition of a David Lynch film, everything seems happy and normal, until you strip below the surface.

Barnett reveals her inner monologue with a mix of daily details and deeper thoughts, explicitly copping to feelings of anxiety and maybe even a bit of an existential crisis.

One of my favorite lines of the year will likely be, “The paramedic thinks I’m clever cause I play guitar, I think she’s clever cause she stops people from dying.”

The Australian native has relentlessly toured all over the world this year in support of her breakthrough album The Double Ep: A Sea of Split Peas, including at Outside Lands’ 2014 edition (read our festival review here), making waves wherever she goes.

Sharing the bill with Barnett is San Fermin, Ellis Ludwig-Leone’s emotionally resonant and theatrical project. Their show earlier this year at The Chapel was a wondrous experience, as word of mouth has definitely gotten out on San Fermin. See these guys and gals before they move on to bigger venues.

It may be on a Monday, but this double-banger is our prescribed “Show of the Week.”

SF Shows of the Week // GO4FREE to Rubblebucket, J. Roddy Walston and The Business or Sinkane

• Sinkane: October 19th (SUN) @ The Independent

Rubblebucket: October 15th (WED) @ The Independent // Buy Tickets

Rubblebucket’s new output, Survival Sounds, is an appropriate name for a very real reason. Lead singer Annakalmia Traver is “doing great now. Better than ever. I’m 100% cancer free” according to a recent interview with thegirlsare. When we saw Rubblebucket late last year, they delivered an inspirational show while Traver was in the midst of treatment. This is an update we are very happy to hear.

Contest ends Wednesday, October 15th at Noon.

J. Roddy Walston and The Business: October 17th (FRI) @ The Independent // Buy Tickets

Let’s look to our review of J. Roddy Walston and The Business at the Independent late last year for reasoning to head to Divis on Friday night: J. Roddy and the Business brought pure rock and roll from start to finish. There was no messing around, no keyboards, no genre jumping songs or other distractions. Just fire-driven energy fueling the set, playing old and new songs in his signature style.

Contest ends Friday, October 17th at Noon.

Sinkane: October 19th (SUN) @ The Independent // Buy Tickets

Sinkane has worked with the likes of Caribou, Yeasayer and of Montreal, and he blew our collective minds as the band leader of the Atomic Bomb! tribute to William Onyeabor that starred David Byrne earlier this year. His new album Mean Love is an enjoyable listen — this is a nice option for a Treasure Island Music Festival after-show.

Although not from the Bahamas, Canadian-born guitar player Afie Jurvanen has a relaxing sound about him that soothes the mind just like the subtle rushing of a gentle shore break. The Orwells with Skaters //
Slim’s – San Francisco
September 27th, 2914 //

Making a stop on their nationwide tour in support of their second album Disgraceland, The Orwells headline this Saturday night at Slim’s. Known for their explosive live shows punctuated by frontman Mario Cuomo’s onstage, full-body fits, The Orwells deliver a refreshingly brash take on contemporary rock music. Echoing aesthetics pulled from 1960’s-era rhythm and blues, Vietnam War anthems and lyrical stylings pulled directly from the forefathers of punk, The Orwells’ sound is as unique as it is timeless. Revisiting a lost era of clangy guitar hooks, driving beats and raw emotion-filled songwriting that has since lost its way in the modern music scene.

LP with Odessa //
Great American Music Hall – San Francisco
September 21st, 2014 //

Laura Pergolizzi, stage name LP, will be gracing Great American Music Hall on September 21st, and will be bringing with her a heavy arsenal of delicious pop missiles to fire upon the audience. If you’ve never heard of Laura’s solo work, there is a significant chance that you have heard her work having spent a good portion of her career writing/co-writing songs for the likes of Rhianna, The Backstreet Boys, and Cher to name a few. Her solo work has seen high praise, attracting Cracker/Camper Van Beethoven’s David Lowery to produce her debut album, as well as seeing multi-platinum award winning producer Rob Cavallo (Green Day, Goo Goo Dolls) for her latest release, Forever For Now.

Opening the show is Santa Rosa native (now residing in Los Angeles), Odessa. After spending several years as a backing violinist in multiple bands, a near fatal bike accident inspired her to focus on her own material. Odessa’s debut EP was released September 16th. A recent appearance on “The Queen Latifah Show”, and having her new single “I Will Be There” appear on a new Subaru ad campaign indicate that we should expect to see much more from her in the near future. -Andrew Pohl

Son Lux with Helado Negro //
The Independent – San Francisco
September 20th, 2014 (Saturday) //

The cinematic, transitory music of Ryan Lott and his trio Son Lux is brooding yet easily assessable, epic but also restrained. A ghostly combination of soft, wondrous melody and symphonic electronic elements set an eerie tone, but Lott’s glitchy beats make the quickest impact.

Son Lux’ 2013 LP Lantern is an impressive, woefully under-appreciated piece of work, and you’ve got your chance to check it out yourself on us this weekend. Just enter your name and email below.

Lott put out a remix album earlier this year that includes an alternate take on one of Son Lux’ best songs, “Easy”, wooing Lorde to add her hazy vocals into the mix. Might Lott be on board to help produce the new queen of alt/pop-rock for her next effort? It wouldn’t be surprising. -Mike Frash

What is Otis you might ask? Well, Otis is a long-running series that revives the classic soul revues of the 1960s — think the Stax revue, just some 50 years after the fact. The Chapel will be hosting this ruckus, constantly packed show this Friday with a truly diverse lineup. Representing the guys on stage will be Aggrolites singer, Jesse Wagner, who is known to set stages ablaze with his robust vocals and fiery energy. The Independent — San Francisco
September 6th, 2014 (Saturday) //

San Francisco’s own Christopher Willits debuts his brand new visual album Opening this Saturday night at The Independent, accompanied by a prelude ambient DJ set by local electronic artist Eskmo. After the completion of his last studio album, Willits set off on an inspirational trip to Thailand in efforts to procure images that aptly match sounds he’d been creating. Through the footage he captured in his continued travels to Hawaii, Japan and around the Bay Area, Willits inevitably embarked upon the “project he had been dreaming about for his whole life.”

Utilizing his innovative musical concept of “folding”, by blending guitar lines and harmonies through custom designed software, Willits’ sound overlaps seamlessly into an abstract narrative with his exotic prints.

Opening is a 45-minute film/album, dictated through seven separate songs and series of photos creating a live visual experience, “designed to inspire a space of peace and expansion.”

Built to Spill love the West Coast. The Boise natives have always treated SF to a handful of shows practically every year for as long as I can remember, and their annual pilgrimage to Slim’s is rapidly approaching. Doug Martsch and associates will be spending three nights in the SOMA playing tracks off the bevy of impressive releases they have amassed over two decades.

This late-summer jaunt will feature the relatively new rhythm section consisting of drummer Steve Gere and bassist Jason Albertini. Having not released an LP in almost five years, attendees can expect the grand possibility of new tracks featured in this intimate club. Fans of guitar-driven rock have flocked to BTS shows over the years, as the combination of rawness and melody have placed them at the forefront independent alternative rock for quite some time. Those Darlins

Those Darlins and Diarrhea Planet @ Brick and Mortar Music Hall // Buy Tickets

It’s going to be a dual-headliner, Nashville rock throw down Thursday night at Brick and Mortar Music Hall. With Those Darlins founding members meeting at the Southern Girl’s Rock & Roll Camp in Tennessee, country roots run deep in the musical history of this band. Formed in 2006, releasing their alt-country debut in 2009, the band fluctuates between traditional southern instrumentation, rockabilly and garage rock. Partners on the bill, fellow Nashville natives and six piece rock band Diarrhea Planet complement the foursome perfectly with their explosive guitar shredding, pop-laden “drunken sing-along” spectacle of a performance. Fresh off of touring their volatile live show to this past year’s South By Southwest, Bonnaroo, Governor’s Ball and various other festival stages (we reviewed their inspiring show at The Indy in 2013), the band brings their energetic ensemble to Brick and Mortar Music Hall for another exclusive night show only performance. Be sure to grab your tickets here. 18+ only.

Cronin, having released his self-titled debut in 2011, has had a busy few years questioning long term relationships, moving to San Francisco, touring and recording with musical counterpart Ty Segall, forming his own band and releasing his sophomore album MCII as a Merge Records artist. A multi-instrumentalist, Cronin’s gritty garage rock sound blends perfectly with co-headliner Bear Hands’ post-punk influenced indie rock. Fresh off the release of their second studio album, Distraction, Bear Hands’ “New York buzz band” reputation precedes them, gaining the group national attention on several music blogs and entertainment websites. Gaining attention in the states initially for his role in the 1991 film The Commitments, Hansard recorded his first solo album in 2006 with the help of Czech singer and multi-instrumentalist Marketa Irglova, whom he would go on to co-star with in the 2006 Sundance winner Once and form The Swell Season together that same year. Hansard has since then recorded and produced various songs on film scores and compilations, lent opening support for Eddie Vedder’s U.S. solo tour, guest starred on American prime-time sitcoms and released his solo debut Rhythm and Repose in 2012. Hansard is not performing at Outside Lands this year, so this performance at the Fox is an exclusive after-party date! Be sure to grab your tickets here.

The Soul Rebels

The Soul Rebels @ Brick and Mortar Music Hall // Buy Tickets

Bringing the NOLA funk to Friday’s Outside Lands festival lineup, The Soul Rebels plan to keep the party going well into the evening at Brick & Mortar Music Hall that evening. Fate brought together original members Derrick Moss and Lumar LeBlanc when they met as percussionists in Dejean’s Young Olympia Brass Band. Although trained in New Orleans jazz fundamentals, the two opted to take the traditional brass band sound they were raised on to the next level, incorporating their love for contemporary R&B, funk and hip hop. Branching off in a new direction, the duo left to form their own group, quickly winning over local audiences and officially being christened the “Soul Rebels” backstage before their opening slot for the Neville Brothers, by Cyril Neville himself. Since then the band has released several full lengths albums, set up a residency at Uptown NOLA club Le Bon Temps, have become a staple act at festivals throughout the globe and most recently released a mixtape Power=Power, premiered by Noisey, including brass band renditions of Jay-Z, Drake, Kanye West, Daft Punk and more. Easily the most funky of post festival Friday night festivities, this show will be the dance party of the weekend. Be sure to grab your tickets here. 18+ only.

Gold Panda

Gold Panda @ Mezzanine // Buy Tickets

Multi-faceted producer Gold Panda returns to Mezzanine on Friday night with his genre-bending take on electronic music. With the rise of producers such as Flying Lotus and Flume, many other similar artists are breaking out to larger crowds and stages as forward-leaning electronica garners a new level of popularity and appreciation. Gold Panda represents a vast amalgam of electronic music, borrowing influences from all over the world to weave an upbeat, futuristic tapestry. His latest release Half of Where You Live has been critically hailed as his third stab at a comprehensive full-length album. Tracks like “Brazil” demonstrate his use of South American rhythms in a contemporary manner while consistently maintaining a dance beat. There are no ‘drops’ or huge frills to his dance ethic, but rather a rapturing, constant beat that listeners can lose themselves in rather easily. Ghostly International only signs the finest in contemporary dance music, so it’s no surprise that Gold Panda reps the prolific label. Teamed with local opener Doseone, this after party will keep the positive energy flowing from Saturday night straight into Gold Panda’s festival set that closes out the weekend on Sunday. Woods

Woods @ Brick and Mortar Music Hall // Buy Tickets

Brooklyn-based Americana, neo-psychadelia outfit Woods will be headlining Saturday night at Brick and Mortar Music Hall ahead of their festival set on the final day of OL. The trio have released eight albums since their formation in 2005, which have garnered them both critical acclaim across the board. Dubbed “pop shamanism”, the band is currently on tour celebrating the release of their new album, With Light and with Love, exploring “expanded sonic palettes” heavy with percussion, altered vocals and experimental guitar riffs. Their latest release on their self-run record label, Woodsist, is described as distinctly different from their previous work, “showcasing a more sophisticated brand of contemporary drug music,” relatable to the Beatles iconic Magical Mystery Tour, catering to a “new age of searchers, of Don Juan and Animal Chin alike.” Easily the biggest head trip of the OSL night show options, if you’re looking to get weird Saturday night, you’re going to want to buy your tickets here. 21+ only.

The Budos Band //
The Independent – San Francisco
July 30th, 2014 (Wednesday) //

Bay Area fans of funk music are rejoicing as the region is receiving a second dose of The Budos Band in the month of July. The New York City funk-punk collective returns to Northern California after two massive sets at High Sierra Music Festival (read our recap here) just a few weeks ago and is ready to bring that heat down the mountain and into the City. If you’re not familiar, this act churns up some seriously driving, instrumental funk that burrows deep into your bones. Fans can expect a variety of tunes — old and new — as the band announced the release of its fourth full-length album Burnt Offering, due out October 21st on Daptones Records. The 10-piece act is set to hold court for “An Evening With” at The Independent this Wednesday, and we have passes for a few lucky readers. -Kevin Quandt

The New Parish – Oakland
July 29th, 2014 //

Shabazz Palaces will be coming through The New Parish early this week for two headlining dates with support from Ghost & The City and Gamera. Formed by members Ishmael Butler (otherwise known as “Palaceer Lazaro” and formally “Butterfly” of Digable Planets) and Tendal “Baba” Maraire, the experimental hip-hop collective from Seattle is one of the very few hip-hop acts to have ever signed to Sub Pop Records. Anonymously releasing two EPs Eagles Soar, Oil Flows and The Seven New in 2009, the group caught the attention of the iconic Pacific Northwest label before releasing its debut full-length as part of Sub Pop’s roster in 2011. Black Up garnered critical acclaim both locally and nationally, and the duo has been on tour promoting it ever since. Now, on the eve of the release of their second full-length album Lese Majesty, Shabazz Palaces will host an unofficial record release party this Tuesday in Oakland. -Molly Kish
