In front of a packed house, Minus the Bear kicked off their show at Great American Music Hall last Thursday with the first two songs — “Last Kiss” and “Give & Take” — from their sixth and most recent LP Voids, which they put out last month.

Before a three-song encore that culminated with “Pachuca Sunrise” from 2005’s Menos el Oso, they ended their set with “Throwin’ Shapes” off 2007’s Planet of Ice, the last album the group released on Suicide Squeeze Records before leaving the Seattle-based indie label for a stint at Dangerbird Records. But then last year, Minus the Bear reunited with Suicide Squeeze to drop the 10-track Voids and have been touring North America in support of it ever since.

Philly punk outfit Beach Slang, who currently have two full lengths under their belt after last year’s sophomore effort A Loud Bash of Teenage Feelings on Polyvinyl, opened the show.

Sigur Rós induce goosebumps with their emotive performance at the Greek Theatre Berkeley

Sigur Rós //
Greek Theatre – Berkeley, CA
April 8th, 2017 //

The slow-burning, epic grandeur of Sigur Rós was on full display in Berkeley last Saturday night as the Icelandic group made its Bay Area fans feel a massive range of emotions, from meditative moments to outright joyousness. No matter what the decibel level was coming from the stage, this audience absorbed each song in a cerebral way, with solemn respect.

Now a trio, Sigur Rós have been delivering goosebumps for over two decades — and it’s a delight to hear Jónsi’s voice-as-an-instrument this clear, this powerful and as confident as ever. It would be a wonderful treat to check in on this outfit every 5-10 years going forward and realize they are still going strong.

Sigur Rós

The Berkeley show pulled a fairly even amount of favorites, as the Sigur Rós live spectacle has become a two-set event with no opener since last year. The first set felt like a proper warm-up, grounding us in the Greek Theatre’s immaculate sound. But the second set brought heavenly satisfaction and micro-concussion blasts of beauty from such songs as “Starálfur”, “Festival” and my personal favorite, the first track off of their (Untitled) album known as “Vaka”.

This tour has been building up to Sigur Rós’ special performances this week in Los Angeles, where they’ll perform alongside the LA Philharmonic for the first set with arrangements by Dan Deacon, Anna Meredith, Own Pallett and many more. This Friday (April 14th), you can teleport yourself to the show with Pitchfork’s live stream of this momentous event. It’s the first time the band has performed with an orchestra in 15 years, so don’t miss it!

Lettuce keep the funk flowing in Oakland

LettuceBy Sterling Munksgard //

Lettuce //
Fox Theater Oakland – Oakland
March 17th, 2017 //

When Lettuce come to town, you know you’re in for a funk-filled night.

The funk ensemble formed at Berklee College of Music in Boston more than 25 years ago has been performing without guitarist and founding member Eric Krasno of late, but that hasn’t slowed it down by any means. In the meantime, they’ve added another funk master in Nigel Hall, formerly of The Nth Power, as their primary vocalist/secondary keyboardist, and more than a year ago we saw how well Hall fits in when the group played in Los Angeles on a bill that included ethnotronic trio Beats Antique strangely enough (read our show review here).

Hitting the road in support of their fifth LP, 2016’s Mt. Crushmore, Lettuce headlined the Fox Theater in Oakland on St. Patrick’s Day for the Bay Area stop on their latest tour. With Adam Smirnoff (guitar), Erick Coomes (bass), Adam Deitch (drums), Neal Evans (keyboards), Ryan Zoidis (saxophone), Eric Bloom (trumpet) and Hall firing on all cylinders like they’ve shown before with and without Krasno, they kicked off a three-night run through California in style.

In their return to SF, Dead Meadow deliver a heroic dose of psychedelic rock at The Chapel

Dead Meadow with Matt Hollywood and The Bad Feelings //
The Chapel – San Francisco
March 29th, 2017 //

Rounding out a tour that’s taken them across most of the country, Dead Meadow returned to SF last Wednesday to play their face-melting, stoner-psychedelic jams at The Chapel after an impressive set from ex-Brian Jonestown Massacre guitarist Matt Hollywood and his band The Bad Feelings.

Matt Hollywood’s current project is a refreshing take on classic psych-rock, emphasizing the slower, ballad-type songs while still offering some high-energy rock ‘n’ roll elements as well. Their set served as a tasty appetizer for the full-blown, psychedelic assault that the evening’s headliner delivered.

Dead Meadow

Dead Meadow arrived onstage accompanied by fog and a production that included visuals of monks in black robes and tripped-out videos which flashed bizarre patterns in a multitude of blues, greens and reds. The next two hours were a journey through their long, loud and trippy catalog of powerful psych-rock that’s influenced heavily by their stoner-rock predecessors.

Barely a moment passed where the crowd wasn’t entirely in motion, collectively entranced by vocalist/guitarist Jason Simon’s relentless shredding. Dead Meadow are a tried-and-true Bay Area favorite, drawing big crowds in a region of the country well-known for its interest in all forms of psychedelia.

Only 22 years old, Jamie Isaac makes his Bay Area debut at Rickshaw Stop

In an intimate setting, London-based singer and producer Jamie Isaac made his Bay Area debut and didn’t disappoint by any means, showcasing his experimental beats and clever lyrics during a headlining show at Rickshaw Stop for POPSCENE.

Isaac’s set included his well-known cover of Alicia Keys’ “Un-thinkable (I’m Ready)” and songs from his lone studio album Couch Baby. Best known for his soulful R&B sound a la James Blake, he can be found singing and playing the piano during his live performances.

At only 22 years old though, it’s hard to believe that Isaac is already touring the states. His crisp voice is one reason why, as it’s definitely one to remember.

MØ exhibits no shortage of energy at The Warfield

March 19th, 2017 //

A packed house at The Warfield on a Sunday night welcomed the return of Danish singer and songwriter MØ (born Karen Marie Asgaard Ørsted), whose last Bay Area performance back in 2014 was a memorable one — when she wore an eye patch on the first day of Treasure Island Music Festival (read our review here) due to an eye infection.

Ørsted made mention of this at The Warfield, asking the crowd if it remembered her “pirate look from last time,” but she still harnessed a lighthearted, yet hyperactive and pumped-up attitude while onstage. The 28-year-old not only had the audience jumping the entire time, but she also came off casually fluid.

In the middle of her set, MØ went up to the venue’s balcony to perform amongst her fans. As she danced along to the music, it became clear that this was one of the best shows I’ve seen so far this year.

Vagabon proves at Rickshaw Stop that she has what it takes to make it big

Vagabon with Allison Crutchfield, joyride! //
Rickshaw Stop – San Francisco
March 23rd, 2017 //

Fresh off a week of shows at South by Southwest, Vagabon took the stage at Rickshaw Stop last night and dropped an incredible set after Allison Crutchfield, who performed with her backing band The Fizz, and joyride! opened things up.

There’s no doubt it has been one helluva month for musician and producer Laetitia Tamko, aka Vagabon. Her debut album Infinite Worlds, which she released last month, came with a whole wave of buzz and excitement for the promising young performer from New York City. Tamko brought a solid presence and powerful voice to SF, making it clear that all the buzz surrounding her first studio effort has been justified.

The Band Perry closed their “Welcome to My Bad Imagination” pop-up tour with a sold-out show at the Great American Music Hall last night.

With the sibling trio set deep amid the crowd and playing in the round, the evening offered a special experience for friends, fans and family gathered at the historic theater. Kimberly, Neil and Reid Perry made sure to provide a strong dose of the new “pop” sound that listeners can expect to hear on their forthcoming third LP My Bad Imagination, which they’ll drop later this year on Interscope Records.

The Coathangers leave an indelible impression in SF

The CoathangersBy Norm de Veyra //

The Coathangers with Girl Tears, The Heartlights //
Brick & Mortar Music Hall – San Francisco
March 10th, 2017 //

The Coathangers tore up SF last Friday with an impressive performance at Brick & Mortar Music Hall. The Atlanta punk trio dropped an infectiously energetic set for the first of two shows in the Bay Area as they continued the West Coast leg of their North American tour.

The all-female group was as cohesive of a band as I’ve ever seen, and this performance only further showcased The Coathangers’ great chemistry as they blazed through tracks off their latest LP Nosebleed Weekend after LA’s Girl Tears and The Heartlights from Oakland opened things up.

And although some may have left the venue a little banged up and bruised from the raucous crowd, I don’t think anyone was complaining after the show ended.

Fresh off their cameo-packed tour stop in LA (read our review here), Run the Jewels crushed back-to-back shows in Northern California. Playing the City National Civic in San Jose as well as the Fox Theater Oakland on a Thursday and Friday night, respectively, El-P and Killer Mike catapulted off the energy from their SoCal performance and sailed into a lyrical stratosphere for their Bay Area fans.

In San Jose and Oakland, the two powerhouse emcees touched upon Northern California’s hip-hop history by giving ample credit to those who showed up and filled the both venues. They each took time between songs to discuss their personal appreciation for the Bay Area and its legacy of artists who have played an integral part in bringing rap, as both a musical genre and lifestyle, to the masses.

Playing an epic set of bangers, RTJ showcased their rowdiest songs from all three of their LPs, keeping the crowd’s energy at a fever pitch during their NorCal shows. San Jose and Oakland each got their own surprise guests and support from Gangsta Boo on the group’s seminal duet “In Love Again” from Run the Jewels 2. In San Jose, DJ Qbert jumped onstage during “Don’t Get Captured”, and the following night in Oakland, DJ Shadow prodigiously threw down for a live performance of “Nobody Speak” as one of the show’s biggest highlights.

Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe expands at Terrapin Crossroads as Phil Lesh joins the party

Karl Denson's Tiny Universe with Phil LeshBy James Nagel //

Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe //

March 27th, 2017 //

Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe brought the funk to Terrapin Crossroads for a two-set, sold-out performance last Friday. Denson and company started things off slowly but eventually put fans into a frenzy with a jazzy cover of ZZ Top’s “Just Got Paid”. After that, the show turned into an energizing dance party for the rest of the night.

Though it might have been a surprise to some, regulars at Terrapin Crossroads have come to expect frequent guest appearances by the Grateful Dead’s Phil Lesh. With three songs left in the first set, Lesh stepped onstage and helped out with a cover of “Shakedown Street”. All in all, it was a very fun, jammy, jazzy and smiles-all-around show.

Silversun Pickups get up close and personal with their hometown fans at The GRAMMY Museum

Silversun PickupsBy Josh Herwitt //

Silversun Pickups //
The GRAMMY Museum – Los Angeles
January 25th, 2017 //

Silversun Pickups are well-known for their connection to LA. The band’s name, in fact, was derived from a liquor store in Silver Lake, where it formed more than a decade ago and first rose to prominence by playing small, local clubs such as Silverlake Lounge and Spaceland (now called The Satellite).

Since then, Brian Aubert (lead vocals, guitar), Nikki Monninger (vocals, bass guitar), Chris Guanlao (drums, percussion, vocals) and Joe Lester (keyboards) have released four studio albums and toured all over the world, with their next run of dates coming this summer as opening support on Third Eye Blind’s “Summer Gods Tour” that kicks off in June.

For the latest iteration of The GRAMMY Museum’s “Homegrown” series, the four-piece sat down with GRAMMY Foundation Vice President Scott Goldman to discuss the writing and recording process for its latest LP Better Nature before performing an acoustic set for those fortunate enough to score a ticket to the event. And with all 200 seats inside the diminutive Clive Davis Theater occupied, Silversun did their best to show why they’re definitely one of LA’s best homegrown acts.

With a saturated weekend of demonstrations and the ongoing controversy over America’s current political climate, a group of SF artists aimed to unite, inspire and contribute to the local community at The Independent.

Rapper/producer Richie Cunning, punk-rock quartet Quaaludes, electronic musician Aria Rostami and stand-up comedian Mikey Walz organized The ShowUp Benefit, an evening of entertainment and philanthropy with the proceeds getting donated to Planned Parenthood, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Human Rights Campaign and National Immigration Forum.

Altogether, the four acts wrapped up the event last Friday with $2,343 raised to split between the four organizations.

Emancipator liberates minds at The Roxy Theatre

EmancipatorBy Josh Herwitt //

Emancipator //
The Roxy Theatre – West Hollywood, CA
January 14th, 2017 //

In a matter of 10 years, Douglas Appling has gone from college student to electronic music producer to record label owner and founder. He has managed to release four studio albums and travel the world in that time, doing it all under his liberating stage name Emancipator. And at the young age of 25, he created Loci Records, which is now home to a cast of up-and-coming artists making music in the vein of melodic downtempo and instrumental hip-hop.

Last Saturday, four of the label’s 10 signees entertained a sold-out crowd in LA on the final night of its U.S. showcase tour. Serving as support at The Roxy Theatre were Tor, Edamame and Lapa, who each set the mood for Emancipator’s headlining set to follow — and what a doozy it was. As Emancipator, Appling has a unique way of melding hip-hop beats with the orchestral sound coming from his sidekick Ilya Goldberg’s violin. He even threw in a Snoop Dogg sample at one point, spreading energy across the venue’s tightly packed dance floor. This wasn’t the Emancipator Ensemble experience that we’ve witnessed before, but it was clear that Appling’s performances have continued to get better with each and every year.

Starline Social Club – Oakland

‘Tis the season for charity concerts and incredible one-off performances that benefit causes in need of extra attention and support right now. Hit incredibly hard by the unfathomable Ghost Ship tragedy that occurred earlier this month, Oakland has been home to quite a few of these events. Though the pain ran deep throughout the community, the heartbreaking loss brought out the best in those who were directly and indirectly affected by the fire.

Scheduled almost serendipitously during a jam-packed week full of relief benefits, charity auctions and various shows dedicated in memory to those involved in the Ghost Ship fire, a completely separate but equally amazing charity show was scheduled at Oakland’s Starline Social Club. Aptly called GOODFest, the benefit series focused on two community-organized programs located in Oakland and New Orleans.

Fantastic Negrito

Fantastic Negrito

Emcee’d by Glynn Washington, the host of NPR’s “Snap Judgement,” the night featured performances by up-and-coming local talent Kelsey Lu, Grammy-nominated funk-fusion outfit Fantastic Negrito and Album of the Year contender Solange Knowles. Interspersed between sets, representatives from both organizations — New Orleans’ Son of a Saint and Oakland’s Ella Baker Center — opened up about their experience and involvement in their respective causes.

All of the artists spoke before and after their performance, sharing their personal anecdotes and sentiments to enhance the evening. They addressed their own connection to the events that recently transpired in Oakland as well as the current state of national affairs that have loomed heavily over the past few months. In a room of no more than 100 people, the energy was tangible. Everyone there knew they were part of something special, and while most fans seemed to be processing the magnitude of the situation in their own way, the resounding fact that you were there for a reason bigger than the moment was unanimous.

Bay Area concertgoers lined the sidewalk outside of Social Hall SF for at least an hour last Saturday while enduring some fall showers to catch LAVA/Republic Records R&B recording artists SoMo and Stanaj. The intimate venue lent itself to a rather intimate night for fans as they watched these two heartthrobs up close and personal.

Miesa welcomed in the soggy crowd, captivating them with her vocal prowess during a brief set. After Miesa’s performance, the crowd held their ground in anticipation for Stanaj.

Stanaj is a millennial success story. Sharing his gift of song over social media has captured the attention of Hollywood celebrities and presented him the opportunity to perform with Lemaitre at Coachella this year all while helping to launch his career.

Stanaj

Stanaj

Republic reps were on hand passing out black, thick-framed Stanaj glasses like those that Stanaj wears so handsomely. Bespectacled fans, meanwhile, had all eyes on him with his smooth vocals and sweet charm. He sang songs off his debut EP The Preview and gave us a sneak peak of his upcoming album. If fans enjoyed Stanaj’s performance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” in October, they were luxuriating in his presence in SF.

Another social-media-star-gone-Hollywood with his YouTube channel generating more than 300 million views, SoMo offered a sizzling set under some dazzling stage lights. Devoted fans sang along, knowing SoMo’s lyrics by heart. Two lucky fans were invited onstage by SoMo to dance with him for a song, but the highlight for many was when SoMo took off his shirt.

SoMo has swagger. Stanaj has panache. Their sets had the crowd swooning. For SoMo and Stanaj fans, this show was worth waiting in the rain for.

Alt-country and roots rock singer-songwriter Sturgill Simpson graced the stage at the iconic Fox Theater Oakland for two straight sold-out shows, ending a nearly seven-month tour of North America. Still in shock from the results of the U.S. presidential election that became official a little more than a week before the gigs, Bay Area attendees were mourning what would and continues to be one of the worst conclusions to 2016.

Amidst the tension and palpable air of discontent, Simpson and his multifaceted bandmates commanded the capacity crowd, shifting the focus from the unfortunate events of November 8th to the celebratory vibes that come with finishing a long tour. Giving it everything he had, Simpson took his fans on a journey through heartbreak and perseverance with songs such as “Living the Dream” and “Brace for Impact (Live a Little)” while guiding the crowd to “Keep It Between the Lines” over the course of a two-hour set.

Lucius exhibit power, beauty at a sold-out Fillmore

LuciusBy Norm de Veyra //

November 17th, 2016 //

Lucius, the Brooklyn-based five-piece, dazzled on the first of two nights at The Fillmore last week. Led by the powerhouse vocals of Holly Lessig and Jess Wolfe, the ever-stylishly caped duo kept the sold-out crowd rolling high through its hour-and-a-half set that highlighted the funkier and harder-hitting tracks off Good Grief, Lucius’ third LP that was released back in March.

A definite highlight of the evening had to be “Gone Insane”, with Lessig and Wolfe slowly building the anguish in their voices to almost a crescendoing, cathartic final chorus — a masterful performance to a powerful song.

Accompanying the indie-pop outfit for the night were The Cactus Blossoms. Minnesotan brothers Page Burkam and Jack Torrey brought with them some solid, old-school country vibes as the duo warmed up the audience with a repertoire of slow-burning love songs and tight harmonies.

The Brits turned up in SF last Tuesday and left The Regency Ballroom crowd swooning. Holly Lapsley Fletcher displayed exactly why she’s one to watch as a young, up-and-coming singer, showcasing her confident and powerful voice. The smooth coolness of Låpsley’s electropop ballads from her debut LP Long Way Home belie her mischievous and humorous personality, but the audience caught glimpses of it during her headlining set.

Låpsley’s fellow countrymen, Aquilo, were on hand to open the show, and the indietronica duo nicely established the vibes early on with their forlorn ballads. The group gave us a nice peek into what we should expect from its debut album Silhouettes, which is set to be released early next year.
