SF Show of the Week (TIMF edition) // GO4FREE to YACHT at The Independent 10/17 (SAT)

YACHTWritten by Nik Crossman //

YACHT with Sage Caswell //
The Independent – San Francisco
October 17th, 2015 //

There exists a band, belief system and business coordinated by Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans under the acronym YACHT. Named after, but not affiliated with, an educational program in Portland, YACHT stands for “Young Americans Challenging High Technology”. The movement, which Bechtolt and Evans have dubbed “The YACHT Trust,” suggests the creation of an idea into form provides a spiritual high attainable by anyone willing to try.

Bechtolt began transmitting YACHT’s belief system into music and PowerPoint presentations in 2002 as a solo project before Evans joined in 2008. After Evans came on board, the dance-punk/electropop duo continued developing its personal philosophy and embodied the result in 2009’s See Mystery Lights and an ebook entitled The Secret Teachings of the Mystery Lights: A Handbook on Overcoming Humanity and Becoming Your Own God. The album, which was released on NYC label DFA Records, received rave reviews from critics, including a “Critic’s Choice” honor from The New York Times.

With support from Los Angeles solo artist Sage Caswell, The YACHT Trust will lead its community through another experience of discovery this Saturday at The Independent in what will serve as a late-night show for this weekend’s Treasure Island Music Festival. You can buy tickets for $22, or you could win a pair of tickets by submitting your full name and email below.

Contest ends this Friday at 3 p.m.

SF Show of the Week (TIMF edition) // GO4FREE to Albert Hammond, Jr. at The Independent 10/16 (FRI)

Albert Hammond, Jr.Written by Nik Crossman //

Albert Hammond, Jr. with Day Wave //
The Independent – San Francisco
October 16th, 2015 //

Citing The Beach Boys, John Lenon, Buddy Holly and The Velvet Underground as some of his major influences, Albert Hammond, Jr. has made a name for himself beyond playing guitar and keyboard in the indie-rock goliath The Strokes. Releasing his debut album Yours to Keep in 2006 launched Hammond’s solo career with much support from his fellow bandmates — lead singer of The Strokes Julian Casablancas, in fact, even played bass and sang backup vocals on the track “Scared”.

After years of living the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle, Hammond opened up about his life in an exclusive interview with Rolling Stone in 2013, explaining why he put himself in rehab and subsequently dove into the making of his first solo EP AHJ. With the release of his latest full-length album Momentary Masters this past July, Hammond continues to balance life as a double agent, refusing to blend the sound of his solo career with that of The Strokes.

This Friday hours before Treasure Island Music Festival gets underway, Hammond invites SF to share an intimate evening with him and opening act Day Wave at one of the city’s most charming venues, The Independent. You can buy tickets for $20, or you could win a pair of tickets by submitting your full name and email below.

Mezzanine – San Francisco
October 8th, 2015 //

Releasing their second album We the Generation last Friday, British drum-and-bass band Rudimental kicked off their North American tour this month and will make their way to Mezzanine in SF this week. After the group’s first album Home debuted at No. 1 on the UK Album Charts and was nominated for a Mercury Prize in 2013, much is to be expected from this platinum-selling quartet.

From humble beginnings surrounding their debut single “Deep in the Valley” to collaborating with English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran on “Bloodstream” this past March, Rudimental continue to prove their validity through the many accolades they’ve garnered over the last four years. Beyond their studio sound, Rudimental’s energetic live show leads the audience through a journey of jubilant drum-and-bass tones. The nature of their sound lends them the opportunity to exploit an exaggerated stage presence and fully engage their fans throughout.

Rudimental will fill Mezzanine with the exultant energy many have come to know and love this Thursday with support from Samo Sound Boy (aka Sam Griesemer). You can buy tickets for $25, or you could win a pair of tickets by submitting your full name and email below.

SF Show of the Week // GO4FREE to Tobias Jesso Jr. at The Fillmore 9/29 (TUE)

Tobias Jesso Jr.Written by Nik Crossman //

Tobias Jesso Jr. with Wet //
The Fillmore – San Francisco
September 29th, 2015 //

Releasing his debut album Goon in March, Tobias Jesso Jr. has been compared to singer-songwriters of the 60’s and 70’s. After playing bass for The Sessions in Los Angeles, the Vancouver native moved back home after his mother was diagnosed with cancer. In the abruptness of his move, he left all his instruments in LA and subsequently taught himself how to play the piano, the main instrument used in most of his solo work.

Pulling from his experiences in LA that included a painful breakup, Goon received universal acclaim from contemporary music critics, including some praise from Rolling Stone for his “12 beautifully lean ballads sung in a vulnerable tenor.” With the help of Chet “JR” White from Girls, Patrick Carney from The Black Keys, Jonathan Rado from Foxygen, John Collins from The New Pornographers and Grammy-winning record producer and sound engineer Ariel Rechstaid, Jesso followed through with his vision and maintained the timeless honesty of his emotional songs on Goon.

This Tuesday, Jesso is bringing his heart to The Fillmore with support from Brooklyn-based synthpop trio Wet. You can buy tickets for $25, or you could win a pair of tickets by registering your full name and email below.

SF Show of the Week // GO4FREE to Against Me! at Slim’s 9/24 (THUR)

Against Me!Written by Nik Crossman //

Against Me! with Annie Girl and The Flight, Cayetana //
Slim’s – San Francisco
September 24th, 2015 //

Originally a solo project by Laura Jane Grace, Against Me! came out of Gainsville, Fla., in 1997. Performing any live show that would take her, Grace eventually filled her act with lead guitarist James Bowman, drummer Warren Oakes and bassist Andrew Seward. Combining punk, folk and country, the vagabond group added to their perpetual tour of live shows with their flagship full-length album Reinventing Axl Rose in 2002 and received 4.5 out of 5 stars by AllMusic for it.

Since their debut album, Against Me! has released five albums and improved their Billboard 200 placement with each subsequent release. In 2012, Grace dropped her birth name (Thomas James Gabel) and publicly came out as transgender, laying the foundation for their 2014 LP Transgender Dysphoria Blues, which reached No. 23 on the Billboard 200.

This Thursday, Grace and the Against Me! crew will take Slim’s on a journey through nearly 20 years of socially conscious punk, folk and country. Tickets are already sold out, but one lucky person can win a pair of tickets by registering their full name and email below.

SF Show of the Week // GO4FREE to Washed Out (DJ set) at Mezzanine 9/17 (THUR)

Washed OutWritten by Nik Crossman //

TBD Fest Kick-Off PartyWashed Out with Touch Sensitive, Prince Fox //
Mezzanine – San Francisco
September 17th, 2015 //

Born into rural America in the early 80’s, Ernest Greene (aka Washed Out) initially pursued a life of books and research with a Masters of Library and Information Science. Unable to land a job after graduation, Greene moved back in with his parents in Perry, Ga., and began making music in his bedroom. While developing his nostalgic sound, which he later packaged under the moniker Washed Out, Greene also worked on dance-pop songs with a group from South Carolina appropriately named Bedroom.

Introducing his sound as Washed Out in 2009 with the release of his first EP Life of Leisure, Greene received solid feedback from the music community that brought him to perform at Pitchfork Music Festival in 2010. Described as “nostalgic, hypnotic bedroom electro-disco pop”, Washed Out’s unique sound landed him with Sub Pop Records, and his single “Feel It All Around” was picked in 2011 as the theme song for the satirical sketch comedy television series “Portlandia” on IFC.

As a one-man, hypno-pop home-studio producer, Greene plays keyboards, a guitar and a piano before mixing it together on a computer. Without the help of a touring band, Washed Out live performances resemble a DJ set with Greene singing over the top of the music while re-arranging it with live keyboards to keep the tempo up and “make it as fun as possible.”

This Thursday, Greene will bring his chillwave/hipster sound to Mezzanine for TBD Fest Kick-Off Party presented by Beautiful Buzzz with Touch Sensitive and Prince Fox providing support. You can buy tickets for $25, or you could win a pair of tickets by registering your full name and email below.

TensnakeWritten by Nik Crossman //

Tensnake with Plastic Plates, Slaptop, The Split //
The Mezzanine – San Francisco
September 11th, 2015 //

Marco Niemerski, better known by his stage name Tensnake, emerged from the disco-ball spotlight in 2010 with his hit single “Coma Cat”, which has since appeared in more than 50 compilations. Born in Hamburg circa 1975, the sounds of disco, boogie, soul, funk and of course 80’s pop all contribute to the groovy reverberations of this German DJ and producer.

In 2014, still celebrating the success of “Coma Cat”, Tensnake released his debut full-length album Glow featuring collaborations with Fiora, Jacques Lu Cont, MNEK and Nile Rodgers, among others. The album received favorable reviews, especially for the choice to include Fiora in almost half of its tracks.

This Friday, Niemerski will bring his luscious 80’s disco hooks to SF’s Mezzanine with Plastic Plates, Slaptop and The Split providing support. You can buy tickets for $25, or you could win a pair of tickets by registering your full name and email below.

The Independent – San Francisco
September 6th, 2015 //

Hailing from Pasadena, Calif., Damon Riddick, aka DāM-FunK, made a name for himself as the modern-funk master when he debuted with Stones Throw Records in 2008. As a 70’s baby, DāM-FunK nurtured his musical talents through his teens and set out to save funk from “the devilish depictions of cartoonish caricatures.”

With songs dubbed “Searchin’ 4 Funk’s Future”, DāM-FunK’s sophomore album Toeachizown proved to the world that “funk is not just a Jheri Curl. There was more to it than that.” Since his debut album, Riddick has continued to produce 80’s throwbacks like his latest single “Glyde 2nyte”.

This Sunday, DāM-FunK will take The Independent down memory lane in all his funk glory with Los Angeles singer-songwriter Ramona Gonzalez, aka Nite Jewel, and SF DJ crew Sweater Funk providing support.

Keeler and producer Al-P (Alex Puodziukas). Formed in 2005, MSTRKFT bring the grit of DFA 1979 as well as the uplifting rhythms and synth melodies of artists like Daft Punk and Ratatat to the stage.

After gaining prominence in 2009 from the release of their sophomore album Fist of God, MSTRKRFT are headed back to SF and are bringing their thumping beats to Mezzanine this Wednesday. August 20th, 2015 //

Well known under the alias Ghostface Killah (GFK) and a prominent member of the Wu-Tang Clan, Dennis Coles comes straight out of Staten Island, N.Y., and has been dubbed as “one of the most colorful storytellers rap has ever seen.”

After the Wu-Tang Clan experienced breakthrough success in the 90’s, Ghostface Killah built his solo career around his debut album Ironman, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart. Steering away from the sounds of the Wu-Tang Clan, GFK’s music is greatly influenced by 70’s soul, a musical trait that has remained consistent throughout his career.

Now, GFK is coming to Mezzanine this Thursday to tell his “painterly fiction” with Toronto instrumental hip-hop trio BADBADNOTGOOD and NY hardcore band Show Me the Body.

Outside Lands Shows of the Week // GO4FREE to The Knocks, Classixx & STRFKR or Karl Denson

The Knocks & ClassixxWritten by Josh Herwitt //

Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival is almost here, and as we mentioned a few weeks ago, the party doesn’t have to stop after the music ends at Golden Gate Park each day. For all of you who want to dance and get your groove on well past midnight, the festival is hosting a number of late-night shows throughout the Bay Area — and Showbams has your tickets to three of the best taking place this weekend.

Win a pair of free tickets to one of our Outside Lands Shows of the Week by entering your name and email below.

The Knocks (DJ set): August 7th (FRI) @ Mezzanine // BUY TICKETS

New York-based producers and electronic music duo The Knocks return to SF after they turned The Independent into a raging house party back in June. And after releasing their latest EP So Classic this year, Ben “B-Roc” Ruttner and James “JPatt” Patterson are coming a knockin’ again. This time, they’ll take their bass-driven, high-energy show to Mezzanine for a DJ set with Cut Snake and The Aston Shuffle also hitting the decks beforehand.

Contest ends this Friday at 3 p.m.

Classixx & STRFKR (DJ sets): August 8th (SAT) @ Mezzanine // BUY TICKETS

Los Angeles electronic music duo Classixx have come a long way since their early beginnings in 2008. After delivering the perfect set at Treasure Island Music Festival last fall, childhood friends Michael David and Tyler Blake have continued to show that they’re on the up and up, putting on an impressive main-stage performance at CRSSD Festival in March. At Mezzanine this Saturday, they’ll be joined by Portland electro-rockers STRFKR, who will play their own DJ set despite being absent from this year’s Outside Lands lineup.

Contest ends this Friday at 3 p.m.

Karl Denson superjam: August 9th (SUN) @ The Independent // BUY TICKETS

Funk/jazz virtuoso Karl Denson has stayed plenty busy over the past year. The San Diego native most recently toured with The Rolling Stones on their “Zip Code” tour and is getting ready to release a new album with his Tiny Universe crew in early 2016. To close out the 2015 edition of Outside Lands, the multi-instrumentalist (saxophone, flute, percussion, vocals) will take over The Independent for a special “superjam” with friends that will be one performance you won’t want to miss this weekend.

Contest ends this Friday at 3 p.m.

SF Show of the Week // GO4FREE to Kevin Morby at Swedish American Hall 7/29 (WED)

Kevin MorbyWritten by Nik Crossman //

Kevin Morby with Rodrigo Amarante //
Swedish American Hall – San Francisco
July 29th, 2015 //

Kevin Morby embarked on his nomadic journey at age 10 when he first picked up a guitar. Leaving his hometown of Kansas City, Morby journeyed to Brooklyn to play bass for the noise-folk group Woods. After a few years performing with Woods, Morby joined forces with his roommate to form The Babies, a side project that released albums in 2011 (self-titled) and 2012 (Our House on the Hill).

Morby uprooted again in 2013, moving his life to Los Angeles, where he released his solo debut album entitled Harlem River. With much influence from folk artists like Bob Dylan, Morby flushed out his sound while on tour and wrote most of the songs for his second album. The record, ironically titled Still Life, exemplifies his wanderlust with lessons learned from his wayfaring.

On Wednesday, the 27-year-old vagabond will lead the crowd through his journeys inside SF’s Swedish American Hall with Brazilian singer-songwriter Rodrigo Amarante opening the show.

You can buy tickets for $20, or you could win a pair of tickets by registering your full name and email below.

Boys Noize Record 10 Year Written by Nik Crossman //

Mezzanine – San Francisco
July 24th, 2015 //

German producer Alex Rhida, aka Boys Noize, has made a name for himself as one of the most illustrious DJs today. Merging various styles of electronic music, Rhida’s innovative sound has earned him acclaimed awards, such as “Top 10 DJs Who Rule the Earth” by Rolling Stone and “Best Electronic Artist” by Beatport.

In 2005, Rhida launched his independent record label Boysnoize Records (BNR) to bring his own music to the world without forfeiting creative control.

“I don’t compromise when it comes to music,” the 32-year-old Rhida says. “I do what I think is cool and what I like and not what the market wants or people may expect. Maintaining artistic freedom has always been the most important thing to me — for my own music and for anyone on my label!”

A decade later, BNR remains independent and celebrates 10 years of supporting more than a dozen artists across 100 releases.

On Friday, Boysnoize Records continues the #BNR10YR celebration in SF at Mezzanine with SALVA, Spank Rock, SCNTST, Cities Aviv, PILO and Escor Krist all hitting the decks before Rhida takes the stage.

SF Show of the Week // GO4FREE to Cut Copy (DJ set) at Mezzanine 7/18 (SAT)

Cut CopyWritten by Nik Crossman //

Cut Copy (DJ set) with Knightlife, Cooper SaverJeffery Paradise //
Mezzanine – San Francisco
July 18th, 2015 //

Inspired by “indie low-fi stuff as much as dance,” Dan Whitford embarked on his musical journey in 2001 when Modular Records signed the new DJ’s solo project under the name “Cut/Copy.” While Whitford occasionally enlisted help from friends, the first few years of Cut Copy live performances were mostly Whitford performing a DJ set where he sampled and remixed his own music.

In 2003, Tim Hoey (guitar) and Mitchell Scott (drums) joined Whitford to develop the well-known sound of Cut Copy, with Ben Browning adding bass guitar in 2010. The band continues to record remixes of popular bands like Jagwar Ma, The Rapture, Death Cab for Cutie, Juan MacClean, Maroon 5 and more.

Cut Copy also run underground dance label Cutters Records and continue to release albums for Knightlife (also performing on Saturday night), Kauf and the Miracles Club, Nile Delta and more, as well as releasing experimental mixtapes like last month’s A Forest Through the Trees.

Whiteford and Hoey use DJing to connect with fans and have fun while experimenting with the amalgamation of rock, disco, indie and pop that has become the band’s sound over the years. Saturday’s DJ set will demonstrate their passion for the experiential innocence music has always brought them.

Mezzanine – San Francisco
July 10th, 2015 //

Ohio-native-turned-Los Angeles DJ Wes James (aka Le Youth), combines R&B with 90’s electronic to deliver uniquely nostalgic, dance-y sounds. His first hit single “Cool” put him on the map when it racked up over 200,000 listens on Soundcloud in 2013. Following the crowd, Ultra Records quickly picked up Le Youth, releasing his first EP, which BBC Radio 1 dubbed “Record of the Week”, in July of 2013.

Le Youth continues to produce get-up-and-move sounds with the release of “Dance With Me” and “Feel Your Love” in 2014 as well as “Real” and “Touch” already this year.

The energy at Mezzanine this Friday will surely be worth dishing out $25 for a ticket, but one lucky person can save their money and win two free tickets below.

Tuesdays With The T’s – Soulstice: Souls of Oakland featuring T Sisters //
Leo’s Music Club – Oakland
June 23rd, 2015 //

Showbams is proud to present the final installment of “Tuesdays With The T’s” at Leo’s Music Club featuring T Sisters. Ending their month-long residency with a local soul showcase, the sister trio will be bringing out the big guns in conjunction with Dijon from Souls of Society, Melody Walker & Jacob Groopman, Adam Lowdermilk and the all-female artist collective Mix’d Ingrdnts.

Equal parts concert and cabaret performance, the multi-instrumentalist T Sisters so far have brought three weeks full of uniquely crafted performances to the main stage at Leo’s. With special cameo appearances, brand-new material and a diverse range of thematic stage shows, the Oakland natives close out their venue takeover this Tuesday with a “Soulstice”-themed spectacle as we transition into longer nights and hotter months.

T Sisters have decided to kick off the party by highlighting some of the top talent from a local pool of Bay Area musicians, artists and fellow creative counterparts, so come out and join us for a night of folk, funk, fusion and fun in what will easily be the most unique live music experience you’ll find this Tuesday in Oakland.

Doors open at 8 p.m., and the event is 18+. Tickets will be available at the door for $10, or you can register below for a chance to win two tickets courtesy of Showbams.

For more information, please visit T Sisters’ website, Facebook or Twitter, and you can RSVP here.

SF Show of the Week // GO4FREE to Mystikal at Mezzanine 6/19 (FRI)

MystikalWritten by Molly Kish //

Mystikal with DJ Apollo, DJ Supreme, DJ Pos Red //
Mezzanine – San Francisco
June 19th, 2015 //

New Orleans-bred, fiya-spitting rapper/actor and Gulf War veteran Michael Lawrence Tyler, better known in the hip-hop community as Mystikal, brings his spicy Cajun rap game to Mezzanine this Friday with support from DJ Apollo, DJ Supreme and DJ Pos Red. Making his debut in 1994 on local Louisiana label Big Boy Records, he became instant competition for rival crew Cash Money Records members Lil’ Wayne and BG. Mystikal gained the attention of Jive record label reps and subsequently his mentor Master P through two of his hottest tracks, which both diss the Cash Money label, before signing on to be a No Limit solider in the mid-90’s and releasing his third and fourth albums through the label.

After breaking off on his own in 1999, Mystikal hit the peak of his commercial success with his 2000 album Let’s Get Ready, which features the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs No. 1 single “Danger (Been So Long)” and The Neptunes-produced hit “Shake Ya Ass”. 2001’s Tarantula brought about the radio hit single “Bouncin’ Back”, which earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album and Best Male Rap Solo Performance in 2003 as well as an acting role in the film “13 Dead Men”.

Eventually squashing his beef with Lil’ Wayne and dealing with legal issues, Mystikal signed on to Cash Money Records in 2011 and has been seen on BET’s “The Cypher” amongst several festival stages throughout the 2010’s. Most recently appearing on Mark Ronson’s fourth studio album Uptown Special, Mystikal lends his vocal stylings to hit single “Feel Right” and is currently on a nationwide tour spreading his lyrical heat and charisma throughout the states. Register below to catch him this Friday in SF.

SF Show of the Week // GO4FREE to Surfer Blood at The Chapel 6/8 (MON)

Surfer BloodWritten by Molly Kish //

Surfer Blood //
The Chapel – San Francisco
June 8th, 2015 //

2015 has been an intense year for Surfer Blood. With a rigorous touring schedule in support of their brand-new album 1000 Palms, a new record deal with UK label Joyful Noise and guitarist Thomas Fekete’s ongoing battle against a very rare cancerous sarcoma, the last six months have provided their share of ups and downs for the Florida garage rock outfit.

Amidst the difficulties it has faced though, the band has continued to come out on top by stunning festival crowds with its live show and new material as well as having singles from the album premiere on BBC Radio 1 and Netflix original series “Daredevil”. Furthermore, Surfer Blood has also brought attention to and inspired a crowd-funding campaign for cancer research and treatment via their GoFundMe campaign.

One person particularly inspired by the band’s advocacy, Bay Area photographer Maggie Corwin, even decided to team up with The Chapel to soft launch her own non-profit entertainment company called Alternative Cure and further promote funding for rare cancer research. After losing her father in December 2014 to the exact same type of sarcoma that Fekete is currently battling, Corwin recognized the importance of living every day in the moment and has taken it upon herself to establish an organization to help others in similar situations.

“Alternative Cure hopes to create lasting memories through the gift of music and relieve stress that is associated with the fight against cancer,” Corwin says.

By providing free concert tickets and VIP experiences for cancer patients and their families through affiliated venues and production crews, Alternative Cure aims to offer cancer patients the opportunity to create lasting memories with loved ones through the gift of music.

Enter below for your chance to partake in the soft opening of Alternative Care at The Chapel with a live performance by Surfer Blood. All donations received will be transferred directly to Fekete for continued treatment and medical expenses.

Contest ends Monday, June 8th at 3 p.m.
