SF Show of the Week // GO4FREE to James Murphy 3/12 (THUR)

James MurphyWritten by Molly Kish //

James Murphy (DJ set) with Eug (FACE) //
Public Works – San Francisco
March 12th, 2015 //

World-renowned musician, producer, DJ, filmmaker, composer, actor and Blue Bottle Coffee espresso muse James Murphy returns to Public Works this Thursday night for a rare DJ set with Eug (FACE) serving as support. Known as the electro-punk archetype from his seminal career as the frontman for LCD Soundsystem, Murphy has played a key role in the evolution of modern-day dance music over the past two decades.

Forming his own record label (DFA Records) in 2001 with co-founders Jonathan Galkin and Tim Goldsworthy, Murphy provided a home for prolifically like-minded artists as well as a launching pad for some of today’s hottest touring acts: Hot Chip, Holy Ghost!, Factory Floor, Yacht, The Juan Maclean and more. After LCD played their last show ever at Madison Square Garden in 2011, Murphy continued branching out as a hands-on producer, getting involved in both Arcade Fire’s 2014 hit album Reflektor as well as several other creative projects including Despacio, remixing sound samples from the 2014 US Open, directing a short film for Canon’s Project Imagination and collaborating with the co-owner of Blue Bottle Coffee to inspire his own blend of espresso.

TV Girl: February 25th (WED) @ Brick & Mortar Music Hall // BUY TICKETS
Trung Ngo and Brad Petering first called attention to themselves as TV Girl in 2010 after the release of their critically-acclaimed single “If You Want It” featuring a Todd Rundgren sample, which got them into a small copywrite debacle with Warner Music Group. Taking the high road, the twosome went on to release their material independently and absent of much Internet presence, managed to book several tour dates, including one at South by Southwest, and produce various EPs, a mixtape and a full studio album entitled French Exit.

Contest ends this Tuesday at 3 p.m.

Eleanor Friedberger: February 26th (THUR) @ Brick & Mortar Music Hall // BUY TICKETS
Frontwoman of the Fiery Furnaces and acclaimed singer-songwriter, Eleanor Friedburger brings her Personal Record to Brick & Mortar Music Hall on Thursday night. Channeling the golden age of California rock ‘n’ roll, Freidburger draws influence from her 70’s idols, dictating a narrative that is both personal and universally relate-able. Paying tribute to the sun-tinged pop aesthetics of timeless classics penned by her predecessors, she brings a modern flare to the classic rock formula, creating a sound that is romantically vibrant, unequivocally defined and truly her own.

Contest ends this Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Les Sins: February 26th (THUR) @ The New Parish // BUY TICKETS
Side project of chillwave ambassador and Toro Y Moi frontman Chaz Bundick, Les Sins was born from a series of 12” records Bundwick released on independent record labels Carpark and Jiaolong as “just another way to make weirder music without alienating TYM fans”. Offering a creative outlet for Bundick to experiment electronically, Les Sins spawned further obscure productions in addition to several alternate monikers, a tour CD-R, singles, collaborative interactive albums and a full length entitled Michael released on Bundick’s very own Company Records in November. Here is your chance to check out this talented renaissance man “work” it out at The New Parish.

Contest ends this Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Mystery Skulls: February 26th (THUR) @ Mezzanine // BUY TICKETS
Dallas native Luis Dubuc formed Mystery Skulls in 2011 after departing former project The Secret Handshake, packing up his belongings and officially setting up shop in Los Angeles. There, he refined his synthpop sound, released his four-song, self-titled EP and has been operating full steam ahead under his new moniker ever since. Opening for Flume and working alongside Chromeo, Avicii and Yeasayer at sold-out venues and festivals throughout Southern California, Mystery Skulls caught the attention of Warner Bros., signing a record deal with them, and in the meantime, is now working with Nile Rogers and Chic on their upcoming album while also producing his own full-length debut. Don’t miss him Thursday at Mezzanine with Blackbird Blackbird opening.

Contest ends this Thursday at 3 p.m.

Kindness: February 28th (SAT) @ Mezzanine // BUY TICKETS
Solo project of singer Adam Bainbridge, Kindness has become synonymous with a type of musical exploration focused on found work, sound sources and collaborations, all meant to branch out from atypical pop music into various mediums and creative fields. Etienne De Crécy: February 20th (FRI) @ Mezzanine // BUY TICKETS
With a 20-year legacy under his belt that includes over 30 EPs, an iconic touring stage show and 40-plus remixes of artists such as Kraftwerk, Morcheeba, Air, Moby and more, it would be only fair to say that Etienne De Crécy is a highly-influential player in the international EDM game. Most notably recognized for his Super Discount project that launched in 1997 and then was revived as Super Discount 2 in 2004, De Crécy helped coin the genre of electro-techno, bringing it to major rock and electronic festivals throughout Europe, Australia and Brazil. Aesthetically, De Crécy was also an innovator in paving the way of the future with one of the most archetypal touring set designs of the mid-2000’s for the Beats’n’Cubes series. Enter here to win a pair of tickets to catch this electro legend hit the decks with support from MPHD, Nora Gray and Laura Lisbona.

Contest ends Friday, February 20th at 3 p.m.

The Gaslamp Killer: February 21st (SAT) @ The New Parish // BUY TICKETS
San Diego native, obsessed music lover, discophile, Dj, promoter and producer are several ways that you can describe William Bensussen aka The Gaslamp Killer, yet nothing truly speaks for the type of person/performer he is until you have seen his live show. A true character, the man exudes an unparallelled energy and commitment to his trade that even the most passionate of artists lack. Self-characterized as instrumental psychedelic, Bensussen’s unique brand has led him to work with artists such as Prefuse 73 and Flying Lotus while developing a catalog of experimental, solo material that included a “Best New Track” award from Pitchfork Media in 2012. For your chance to check out this caliber of a performance in such an intimate venue is an opportunity worth applying for, and you’ll be sure to thank us post-show when you’re gathering what’s left of your blown mind/melted face.

Showbams Presents: The Soft White Sixties, Mahgeetah & Coo Coo Birds at Brick & Mortar 1/28 (WED)

TSWS

Showbams Presents: The Soft White Sixties, Mahgeetah, Coo Coo Birds //
Brick & Mortar Music Hall – San Francisco
January 28th, 2015 //

We’re presenting our first show this Wednesday at Brick & Mortar Music Hall in San Francisco, and we want you to join us. Some of our favorite local SF acts will be blowing the venue doors right off their hinges, so enter below for your chance to GO4FREE.

BUY TICKETS if you know you want to go.

tsws_04

The Soft White Sixties have hit the bricks hard the past couple of years promoting their debut LP Get Right. while introducing “Working Class Soul” to live music fans across the US. Covering the group’s album release show, we wrote, “Octavio Genera commands a crowd like a champion – His enthusiasm is evident, and this bolsters the sound created by his talented band.” In reviewing the group’s Noise Pop show last year, we proclaimed, “This band excels at hard-driving rock, which they delivered in a big way many times throughout the night with well-placed lighter songs to bring things back to earth once in a while. In essence, The Soft White Sixties curate a well-paced show.”

If you’re a fan of music from The Black Keys, Pickwick or Delta Spirit, then head toward the Mission this Wednesday evening for the last show on The Soft White Sixties’ concert calendar.

mahgeetah-5

One of our favorite indie acts from the Bay Area, Mahgeetah, will be teeing up TSWS’ final night of their residency, which has us pretty excited. Take a peep at what we said about Mahgeetah’s live show last summer: “All hail Mahgeetah as they continue to be an important piece in the local music scene. “Creature of Habit” was passionately belted out by guitarist JJ Mellon, a standout on the their LP that has become a treat on stage. Longtime favorite tune, “Long Shot”, was another highlight as the slow build from Fisher and band burst with energy and groove comparable to White Denim. The rhythm section, featuring Tim Tyson on bass and Alex Swain on percussion, has always been a strong suit for this San Francisco act, and tonight showed no exception.”

Coo-Coo-Birds-Orange

Grimy psych-rock with a savage, spiritual narrative will be getting our asses into Brick & Mortar plenty early this Wednesday to see Coo Coo Birds. Let’s let the guys from Coo Coo Birds set the stage themselves: “Noted for causing spiritual awakening in the members of their congregation; the band’s live performances are considered by many- even by those outside of the occult- to be a religious experience. Abandoning modern conveniences for a more corporal connection with the Divine, the group is rumored to have recorded their prayers using ancient methods; including magnetic tapes, and primitive amplification.” Sounds good. We’re in.

Win-2-Tickets

Join us this Wednesday for free (if you’re lucky) by entering your name and email below. Contest ends Tuesday at 2 p.m. We’ll notify you by mid-day Wednesday if you are going for free.

Celebrating their critically-acclaimed full length Sorry to Bother You and the release of their 2014 EP La Grande Boutique, The Coup kick off the U.S. leg of their tour this Friday night at The Independent. The six-member Oakland collective, fronted by the enigmatic Boots Riley, has been rocking stages worldwide with their revolutionary shows and politically-charged, funk-infused punk, disco and hip-hop for nearly 15 years. This artistic tour de force has released six full-length albums, two EPs, several compilations and numerous music videos directed by some of the most progressive talent within the Bay Area film industry. The band’s latest album, featuring collaborations with Killer Mike, Das Racist, Japanther, Anti-Flag and Vernon Reid amongst others, has marked some of its most innovative and combustible material to date. WATERS: January 24th (SAT) @ The Independent // BUY TICKETS
Originally formed in Norway by frontman Van Pierszalowski, WATERS’ critical success is one based in bi-continental configurations and audible wanderlust. With only one full-length album and an EP released on Vagrant Records this past year, Pierszalowski has captured the attention of audiences worldwide with his contagious brand of thrash pop and exciting live shows. After releasing their debut album in 2011 and their follow-up EP It Might All Be Okay (produced by Grouplove’s Ryan Radin) in 2014, WATERS skyrocketed into becoming a buzz-worthy name on the indie-rock circuit. Landing a feature in Nylon, being named one of Rolling Stone’s “10 Artists You Need to Know” and touring in support of some of the largest names in the industry, the five-piece have continued their rise to fame with no signs of slowing down. His tracks from Glass Swords were even used in a British advertisement for adidas and the Square Enix video game “Sleeping Dogs.” Furthermore, the record went on to win The Guardian’s prestigious “First Album” award. Touring behind his follow-up album Green Language that dropped in August, the 13-track effort has already received critical praise in the states, with Pitchfork naming his tracks “Raptor” and “Attak” (featuring Danny Brown) as two of 2014’s best. Debuting a stunning new stage setup for his largest tour to date, Rustie will be displaying immersive 3D visuals (provided by A-Rock), along with several extravagant effects. Don’t miss this larger-than-life set in one of SF’s most intimate venues.

Contest ends Wednesday, January 14th at Noon.

The Fresh & Onlys: January 15th (THUR) @ Great American Music Hall // BUY TICKETS
The Fresh & Onlys have remained a key cog in SF’s “new garage rock” movement, but the quartet led by Tim Cohen of Black Fiction offers more than just driving, heavily-distorted guitar riffs. Cohen and his three sidekicks — bassist Shayde Sartin, guitarist Wymond Miles and drummer Kyle Gibson — also dabble in psychedelia, new wave, acid folk and 80’s jangle pop. With their catalog spread across multiple record labels, they’ve found a more permanent home in Brooklyn’s own Mexican Summer, which released their 2012 LP Long Slow Dance, 2013 EP Soothsayer and latest full-length album House of Spirits last year. Headlining their 10-year anniversary show at the Great American Music Hall on a Thursday night with support from Cool Ghouls, Mr. Elevator & the Brain Hotel and Fine Points, this local foursome will be ready to give the hometown crowd a night it won’t forget.

Talib Kweli with Niko, K’Valentine //
The Independent – San Francisco
December 21, 2014 //

Brooklyn-born emcee, lyricist, activist and politically charged hip-hop legend Talib Kweli is bringing his powerful flow back to the Bay. Promoting global consciousness that are assisted by genre-defining beats, he has been a staple in the rap game for more than the past 20 years.

Kweli’s work has served as thought-provoking dialogue between industry heads, government figures, community advocates and fans alike. Touring behind his most recent release of live cuts, P.O.C. Live!, he reflects on his legacy, shifting his creative vision and the inspiration he gets from his peers and collaborators.

This Sunday at The Independent, attendees can expect to hear plenty of tracks off of Kweli’s 2013 album Prisoner of Conscious, which he says he spent more time working on than any of his other records. But they can also expect to hear a career-spanning set of hits, none other than the Kanye West-produced single “Get By” from his 2002 debut LP Quality.

This is an iconic performance NOT to be missed. Tickets are available for $35, or you could win a pair of tickets by submitting your full name and email below.

Sky Ferreira: November 25th (TUE) @ The Independent // BUY TICKETS
When an artist can take on a three-night run at a room like The Independent, you take notice. The buzz has been at a consistent hum for a good while now on Sky Ferreira. The pop starlette-in-the-making has an EP and a critically acclaimed long player under her belt that she’s been touring on for many moons, and in some ways, her celebrity status, social media following and scandals have preceded her innovative pop songs. Ferreira’s music holds up to the spectacle, and her third and final show at The Independent on Tuesday night (also her last of the tour) ends months of playing festival and a string of appearances opening for Miley Cyrus. Here’s your third and final chance — tickets are still available for the Tuesday night show, or you might be able to go for free if you enter below.

Contest ends Tuesday, November 25th at 1 p.m.

Hot Chip (DJ) with The 2 Bears: November 28th (FRI) @ Mezzanine // BUY TICKETS
It’s going to be a night of four-on-the-floor excitement, infused with a double dose of familiar indie-dance brethren this holiday weekend at Mezzanine. The 2 Bears, a dance-duo offshoot led by Hot Chip co-founder Joe Goddard and his compadre Raf Rundell, are currently on the circuit promoting their new LP The Night Is Young. Their signature sound skewers toward playful house disco, but the unit dabble in two-step, hip hop and soul as well. The other co-founder and frontman of Hot Chip, Alexis Taylor, will hold down headlining duties. One thing seems certain — we should see some cross pollinating between the two acts throughout the evening.

SF Show of the Week // GO4FREE to The Presets at The Warfield 11/13 (THUR)

The-Presets

Written by Mike Frash //

The Presets with Antwon, Chela, Franki Chan, Marco De La Vega & Chauncey //
The Warfield – San Francisco
Thursday, November 13th 2014 //

Win a pair of free tickets to one of our SF Shows of the Week by entering your name and email below. Contest ends Wednesday, November 12th at Noon.

The Presets last full length, Pacifica, was one of our top 10 albums of 2012, and lucky for us the captivating Aussie duo return to SF this Thursday at The Warfield.

We were there for their return to touring at The Independent, when they blew minds sub-headlining at Treasure Island Music Festival, along with their appearance last year at Fox Theater Oakland, so we can promise one thing: you will dance.

And if you don’t find yourself dancing while taking in The Presets, perhaps it’s time to check yourself.

This couldn’t be more true than right now as The Presets wrap up the Check Yo Ponytail tour, where the party-starting electro-house outfit have joined forces with a dynamic group of dance and rap upstarts that includes Le1f, Antwon, Chela and Frankie Chan.

The Presets are busy at work on their fourth LP, but that didn’t stop Julian Hamilton and Kim Moyes from releasing two excellent singles this year.

First came “Goodbye Future”, a tech-house blaster that slightly signals a return to a song structure reminiscent of “This Boy’s in Love”.

“No Fun” balances a wonky breakbeat with a four-on-the-floor chugger, until it blasts off into a refrain that crescendos into the euphoric stratosphere.

The Presets are one of our favorite dance acts that incorporate live instrumentation and singing, and you can win big by seeing them for free courtesy of Showbams. Enter your name below.

Buy tickets if you know you want to go.
