WKEND MIXTAPE: Bassnectar – Immersive Music Mixtape – Side 2

This past week the Bay Area was treated to a visit from hometown hero Bassnectar. This past Tuesday, Lorin dropped the second side of his Immersive Music Mixtape. The mix is a faithful interpretation of his live show, minus the bass shaking your insides. More than your standard dj mix, Lorin has his fingerprints on almost every track; be it a remix, edit, or an original. I think he says it best:

On this brand new Side Two excursion, take a trip through my sonic kaleidoscope and hear brand new music as well as some vintage selections and re-creations, with exclusives including remixes of Grimes, The Deftones, Lux and Telefon Tel Aviv.

WKEND MIXTAPE: Disclosure Essential Mix

This week’s mix comes from electronic golden boys Disclosure with their turn on BBC’s Essential Mix. With the recent release of their debut album Settle, the Surrey-based brothers have been showing up everywhere lately.

The two-hour mix opens with a tribute to J Dilla, showcasing tracks from Q-Tip, Slum Village, Gang Starr, and Jaylib. From there, it moves on to what one would expect from Disclosure. Among tracks from Moodyman, Bassjackers, Adonis, Native Soul, Omar, and others you will find a couple of their own jams (“Latch”, “When a Fire Starts to Burn”). A refreshingly eclectic mix from the duo. Enjoy!

As I look back on last week’s Outside Lands festival, a few performances really stood out. On Sunday, it was FOALS that really shined.

Touring in support of their latest album, Holy Fire, FOALS delivered a stunning set on the main stage. With FOALS on my mind, I pulled out funky dance mix from keyboardist Edwin Congreave. Featuring a slew of artists like LCD Soundsystem, Richard Dorfmeister, Crystal Castles, The XX, Azari & III, and Djinxx, it also includes remixes of FOALS tracks from Flight Facilities and Chris Woodward Vox.

The Australian group Jagwar Ma released their incredible debut this year and are currently making the festival rounds on tour. Jono Ma, one-half of the group, put together this week’s mix. He incorporates the Jagwar Ma vibe with a range of artists including The Velvet Underground, J Dilla, Primal Scream, Cut Copy, The Animals, Serge Gainsbourg, The Wailers, and more.

WKEND MIXTAPE: Radio Soulwax Essential Mix

Our mix this week is a bit of a throwback, but this mix holds up to the test of time. This mix originally aired on BBC 1’s Essential Mix at the beginning of 2005. Soulwax curated an impressive collection of originals, remixes, and their own covers of dance tracks as a full band. At their core, Soulwax are two brothers from Belgium who perform as a live band and dj under the 2manydjs guise. Last weekend Thom Yorke & Nigel Godrich of Atoms for Peace (and Radiohead) took over the decks for BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix. The two-hour mix showcases unreleased Radiohead material, Doom, Atoms for Peace remixes and Thom’s own solo work alongside tracks from Aphex Twin, Diplo, Boys Noize, Shed and Steve Reich.

WKEND MIXTAPE: DJ Shadow – All Basses Covered

Bay Area local DJ Shadow is our highlight this week with an expansive mix of music showcasing what some have dubbed as “too future” for the club.

Shadow was playing at Mansion Nightclub in Miami when shortly after starting was asked to end his set (see video below). Much has been written on the incident, so no need rehash this here. What we gained from this is the release of a 90-minute version of his set. I think Shadow sums this up best:

“Beginning in the Summer of 2012 with his Low End Theory guest spots, DJ Shadow’s “All Basses Covered” set has morphed and evolved to incorporate as many different contemporary genres of urban and electronic music as possible. From hardcore rap to footwork and juke and beyond, Shadow has combed the web to curate seamless and dexterous blends of the most progressive sounds bubbling up from the underground. ‘Too hard?’ ‘Too future?’ Or just too raw? As always, DJ Shadow has provoked crucial flashpoints of discussion about the discipline of DJ’ing that have defined our turbulent times.”
