WKEND MIXTAPE V13: Poolside • Tensnake • Alex Metric

WKEND-MIXTAPE-13

We have three new mixes this week from Poolside, Tensnake, and Alex Metric to get your weekend started right.

Poolside

PoolsideStir It Up

Our first mix eases us into the weekend with Poolside’s distinct “daytime disco” sound. As summer begins this is your beachside soundtrack combing the Brazilian vibes of Gilberto Gil with their own laid back tracks and edits. I challenge anyone to listen and not want to escape to the sun for an impromptu daytime dance party.

Tensnake

TensnakeSolé x THUMP Fixtape Vol. 26

Next up is German DJ/producer Tensnake, an artist we’ve featured here before, offering up a mix for Solé and THUMP. This mix is a perfect follow up from Poolside, starting off slow with tracks from Kraftwerk, Fort Romeau, and Chicken Lips to build up to house and disco jams from Nancy Whang & Audiojack, Blende, and Aksel Friberg. This one is a slow burner and definitely worth checking out.

Alex-Metric

Alex MetricHard Summer Mixtape 2014

Wrapping up this week’s mixes is another artist we’ve featured before, British DJ/producer Alex Metric. This time he is back with a mix for the Hard Summer festival taking place August 2-3 in Los Angeles. He starts things out with “Galaxy”, his collaboration with Oliver and builds with tracks from Tensnake, Duck Sauce, Riton, and remixes from himself, TEED, Aeroplane, Prins, and Sould Clap.

Check out Alex djing tonight at Audio in Soma. Tickets are still available here.

WKEND MIXTAPE V12: tUnE-yArDs • DJ Dan • DJ Food

WKEND-MIXTAPE12

We’re back with three new mixes from tUnE-yArDs, DJ Dan and DJ Food to get your weekend started right.

Tune-Yards

tUnE-yArDsAfrica In Your Earbuds

First up this week is a mix from tUnE-yArDs, who are playing two sold out shows at the Fillmore this weekend in San Francisco to support their latest release, Nikki Nak on 4AD. This mix for Okayafrica highlights vintage sounds from East Africa. Here is Merrill Garbus’s thoughts on her mix:

No doubt, I have a limited knowledge of African music, because, well, that’s an entire continent and thousands of years of music, and a girl from Connecticut only has so many hours in a day. So for this mix I delved into my old favorites, artists who have influenced what I do now, as well as some things I’ve been introduced to fairly recently.

While listening to this mix I can imagine the tUnE-yArDs catalog fitting in nicely with these tracks. With the constant release of mixtapes from DJs, producers, etc. lately, it is nice to hear something that stands out from the crowd.

DJ-Dan

DJ DanThump Mix 2014

Picking things up is a new mix from DJ Dan for Thump. As he has done for for the last two decades, Dan brings us a tight, funky mix of house tracks for our listening pleasure. Alongside his own tracks you will hear from Wise D, John Acquaviva, Sharam Jey, Schuhmacher, Dat Heathen, and Format:B. This, to me, is the sound of the weekend. DJ Dan will be performing at Monarch in SF Friday, June 13.

DJ-Food

DJ FoodChildren of the Sun Mix

Easing things back is our final mix from the UK’s DJ Food, who provides an eclectic mix about the sun and summer in general. This mix is tailor-made for relaxing and lying in the grass or sun. DJ Food takes music from a range of styles with all tracks tied to sun, summer, and the great outdoors. Artists highlighted include The KLF, The Orb, Boards of Canada, Three Dog Night, Diplo, The Dells, Isley Brothers, Roberta Flack, Dr Rubberfunk, and DJ Food himself.

WKEND MIXTAPE V11: Galantis • Todd Terje • !!!

WKEND-MIXTAPE11

We’re back to normal this week with Galantis, Todd Terje, and !!! all dropping mixes to serve as soundtracks for your weekend.

Galantis

GalantisSeafoxchella 2014 Live Set

Swedish duo Galantis, Christian Karlsson (of Miike Snow) and Linus Eklow (Style of Eye), have burst onto the scene in the last six months with their EP Smile, a debut live set at Coachella, and what I’d argue is one of the best logos in the scene. Galantis has now shared their live set from Coachella; a blend of their own songs from the EP along with remixes and other big room tracks. A sneaky bit of Miike Snow’s “Animal” makes an appearance along with tracks from Tom Staar, Deorro, Alvaro, and Botnek. Expect big things from these two in the coming months.

Terje

Todd TerjeBBC Radio1 Essential Mix

Next up is an installment of BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix from Norwegian disco producer Todd Terje. Todd released his first full-length It’s Album Time last month, garnering praise from fans and critics alike. His essential mix is an eclectic blend of contemporary and classic sounds. Looks for tracks from Lone, Herb Alpert, Tanner Ross, Steve Miller Band, Edu Lobo, Jim Morrison, Men at Work, Traks, and Linus Loves. This one is fun, funky, and perfect for the summer.

chkchkchk

!!!MIXTAPE NAME 3

Closing out this week with a mix from !!! for Thump in advance of their summer North American tour. An amalgam of styles are showcased with everyone from Crazy P to David Lynch featured. Other artists featured include Scuba, The Bionics, Romare, Dexter, Tom Rujig, Mr. G, and Dirty Channels. This is one of the rare examples of a band/artist actually knowing how to mix records instead of just hitting sync in Traktor.

WKEND MIXTAPE: 2 Many Dj’s – As Heard on Radio Soulwax pt. 2

2-Many-DJs_post

We’re taking a departure this week from our normal showcase of three mixes for one very special audio/visual mix from 2 Many Dj’s as part of their Radio Soulwax mix series.

2 Many Dj’sAs Heard on Radio Soulwax pt. 2

The brothers Dewaele, know for their live band Soulwax and djing moniker 2 Many Dj’s, have a long history of innovative takes on dance music. Over the last three years they have released hour-long audio/visual mashup mixes through their iPhone/Android app for Radio Soulwax. The final chapter was released this week and offers an incredible visual experience in sync with the music. They’ve taken the album covers from the tracks and feature them in a “Monty Pythonesque” animation style. The mix includes tracks from artists including The Stooges, Kylie Minogue, The Jets, Skee-lo, The Breeders, Garbage, Dolly Parton, The Creeps, New Order, and many others. It needs to be seen to be believed. The brothers released a statement through Pitchfork on the latest chapter in the series:

“12 yrs, 2 months and 24 days later, 114 tracks are re-united in 1 single hour of visual mayhem,” Soulwax said in a statement. “As heard on the radio becomes As seen on the app..is this technically Pt III? Probably. Who’s counting? Who cares? Just watch it.”

The other 23 mixes in the series are available online or via their own app at http://radiosoulwax.com.

WKEND MIXTAPE V10: Justin Martin • Alex Metric • Miami Horror

Miami-Horror

Miami HorrorSolé Fixtape Vol. 22

James-Murphy-&-Pat-Mahoney

James Murphy & Pat MahoneyFabriclive 36

We end this week with a classic mix from 2007 posted yesterday by DFA Records. James Murphy & Pat Mahoney, formerly of LCD Soundsystem, offer up an hour of fantastic tracks including those from Instant Funk, GQ, Lenny Williams, Baby Talk, Love Committee, Junior Bryon, City of Women, and LCD Soundsystem. James and Pat offered up a primer for this mix:

“We’re pretty excited. We find doing mix CDs horrifying to a certain degree because there’s nobody there, so it’s just like, “What are we doing?!” It’s like you’re just yelling into the air. We bought an old Bozak for this – the first DJ mixer ever built, hand-built. It sounds incredible. Everything sounds nicer and bigger and smoother and beautiful. The mix itself will have a little bit of stuff that isn’t necessarily what we’d play in a club. But we’d like it to be fun. So we’ll just do it a bunch of times live. Do it until you like it, that’s actually our motto.”

Enjoy!

Enjoy!

Alex-Metric

Alex MetricTour Jams: Volume 1

Alex Metric gives us a glimpse into what he’s listening to that keeps him going while on the road. Tunes from Holy Ghost!, Drake, Moderat, Mayer Hawthorne (Oliver Remix), St Lucia, James Holden, and more. Here is how Alex describes it:

“I’ve been on the road pretty solidly since August. I wanted to put together a mix of the tracks I’ve been listening to while on the road. Those tracks on my ipod that kept getting listened to again and again. The tracks that go on when I’m in my hotel room, in a bunk on a tourbus, waiting in airports or looking out at the clouds while in the sky.”

Alex Metric is playing tonight (January 31) at 105 Folsom as part of their Chinese New Year party. Tickets are still available here.

Four-Tet

Four TetJanuary 2014 Mix

After some issues with Soundcloud getting this online, you can now stream/download the latest mix from Kieran Hebden a.k.a. Four Tet. His latest clocks in at just over an hour and features a mystery tracklist that has many stumped. Enjoy the lo-fi and classic house sounds as a perfect jump off to your weekend!

WKEND MIXTAPE: Flume – The Mixtape

FLUME

Flume‘s four-disc deluxe edition released earlier this month, and it includes a jam-packed mix tape that layers male hip-hop, R&B and rap vocals over his self-titled debut, an album that has made the Australian DJ one of the fastest rising producers on the planet. Special guests include Killer Mike, How to Dress Well, Ghostface Killah, Autre Ne Veut, Twin Shadow and more.

It’s just over 20 minutes and length, yet it packs a wallop. In many ways, this makes Flume’s original record seem incomplete now that some of today’s fastest rising stars have added song-dominating rhymes — honestly, listening to the Flume originals feels a bit bare and empty after you hear this. Although, these masculine vocal stems should make Harley Streten’s live performance that much better.

WEND MIXTAPE: Cut Copy – Boiler Room 2013

Wkend-Mixtape_cut-copy

The Bay Area was lucky enough to witness Cut Copy perform at the Fox Theater Oakland this past weekend, a few days before they released their fourth LP Free Your Mind November 5. Cut Copy has also been revealed as one of the mystery headliners at Snow Globe this year at Lake Tahoe over New Year’s Eve weekend.

Earlier this year, Cut Copy played a set as part of the Boiler Room – Australia series. As part of a stacked bill, Cut Copy played a tight 60-minute set alongside Roland Tings, Tornado Wallace, Naysayer, and Zanzibar Chanel. Look out for tracks from Mr. Fingers, Joakim, Tony Lionni, Jesse Perez, Belgen, and more. Let’s consider this your warm up for the weekend…

WKEND-Mixtape---Bassnectar

This past week the Bay Area was treated to a visit from hometown hero Bassnectar. This past Tuesday, Lorin dropped the second side of his Immersive Music Mixtape. The mix is a faithful interpretation of his live show, minus the bass shaking your insides. More than your standard dj mix, Lorin has his fingerprints on almost every track; be it a remix, edit, or an original. I think he says it best:

On this brand new Side Two excursion, take a trip through my sonic kaleidoscope and hear brand new music as well as some vintage selections and re-creations, with exclusives including remixes of Grimes, The Deftones, Lux and Telefon Tel Aviv.

WKEND MIXTAPE: Edwin Congreave – FOALS Mix #2

FOALS

As I look back on last week’s Outside Lands festival, a few performances really stood out. On Sunday, it was FOALS that really shined.

Touring in support of their latest album, Holy Fire, FOALS delivered a stunning set on the main stage. With FOALS on my mind, I pulled out funky dance mix from keyboardist Edwin Congreave. Featuring a slew of artists like LCD Soundsystem, Richard Dorfmeister, Crystal Castles, The XX, Azari & III, and Djinxx, it also includes remixes of FOALS tracks from Flight Facilities and Chris Woodward Vox.

WKEND MIXTAPE: Natural Self – Neon Hertz: A Mixtape

Natural-Self

Our mix this week is a companion piece to Natural Self’s latest album Neon Hurts My Eyes. I think the artist can describe the mix best:

Neon Hertz is a mix. Rather than a selection of influences on the album Neon Hurts My Eyes, it is in fact inspired by it. Reverse-engineered, you might say. Themes present in the album, both musical and lyrical can once again be found here. You will here voices. They will speak of time and space, of technology, of society and of consequence. The music will be a landscape that surrounds you. At night, looking down onto the city, it will all make sense.

Perfect for the drive out of town for the holiday weekend. The tracklist is below to follow along. Enjoy!
