WKEND MIXTAPE V13: Poolside • Tensnake • Alex Metric

We have three new mixes this week from Poolside, Tensnake, and Alex Metric to get your weekend started right.

PoolsideStir It Up

Our first mix eases us into the weekend with Poolside’s distinct “daytime disco” sound. As summer begins this is your beachside soundtrack combing the Brazilian vibes of Gilberto Gil with their own laid back tracks and edits. I challenge anyone to listen and not want to escape to the sun for an impromptu daytime dance party.

TensnakeSolé x THUMP Fixtape Vol. 26

Next up is German DJ/producer Tensnake, an artist we’ve featured here before, offering up a mix for Solé and THUMP. This mix is a perfect follow up from Poolside, starting off slow with tracks from Kraftwerk, Fort Romeau, and Chicken Lips to build up to house and disco jams from Nancy Whang & Audiojack, Blende, and Aksel Friberg. This one is a slow burner and definitely worth checking out.

Alex MetricHard Summer Mixtape 2014

Wrapping up this week’s mixes is another artist we’ve featured before, British DJ/producer Alex Metric. This time he is back with a mix for the Hard Summer festival taking place August 2-3 in Los Angeles. He starts things out with “Galaxy”, his collaboration with Oliver and builds with tracks from Tensnake, Duck Sauce, Riton, and remixes from himself, TEED, Aeroplane, Prins, and Sould Clap.

Check out Alex djing tonight at Audio in Soma. Tickets are still available here.

WKEND MIXTAPE V12: tUnE-yArDs • DJ Dan • DJ Food

We’re back with three new mixes from tUnE-yArDs, DJ Dan and DJ Food to get your weekend started right.

tUnE-yArDsAfrica In Your Earbuds

First up this week is a mix from tUnE-yArDs, who are playing two sold out shows at the Fillmore this weekend in San Francisco to support their latest release, Nikki Nak on 4AD. This mix for Okayafrica highlights vintage sounds from East Africa. Here is Merrill Garbus’s thoughts on her mix:

No doubt, I have a limited knowledge of African music, because, well, that’s an entire continent and thousands of years of music, and a girl from Connecticut only has so many hours in a day. So for this mix I delved into my old favorites, artists who have influenced what I do now, as well as some things I’ve been introduced to fairly recently.

While listening to this mix I can imagine the tUnE-yArDs catalog fitting in nicely with these tracks. With the constant release of mixtapes from DJs, producers, etc. lately, it is nice to hear something that stands out from the crowd.

DJ DanThump Mix 2014

Picking things up is a new mix from DJ Dan for Thump. As he has done for for the last two decades, Dan brings us a tight, funky mix of house tracks for our listening pleasure. Alongside his own tracks you will hear from Wise D, John Acquaviva, Sharam Jey, Schuhmacher, Dat Heathen, and Format:B. This, to me, is the sound of the weekend. DJ Dan will be performing at Monarch in SF Friday, June 13.

DJ FoodChildren of the Sun Mix

Easing things back is our final mix from the UK’s DJ Food, who provides an eclectic mix about the sun and summer in general. This mix is tailor-made for relaxing and lying in the grass or sun. DJ Food takes music from a range of styles with all tracks tied to sun, summer, and the great outdoors. Artists highlighted include The KLF, The Orb, Boards of Canada, Three Dog Night, Diplo, The Dells, Isley Brothers, Roberta Flack, Dr Rubberfunk, and DJ Food himself.

WKEND MIXTAPE V11: Galantis • Todd Terje • !!!

We’re back to normal this week with Galantis, Todd Terje, and !!! all dropping mixes to serve as soundtracks for your weekend.

GalantisSeafoxchella 2014 Live Set

Swedish duo Galantis, Christian Karlsson (of Miike Snow) and Linus Eklow (Style of Eye), have burst onto the scene in the last six months with their EP Smile, a debut live set at Coachella, and what I’d argue is one of the best logos in the scene. Galantis has now shared their live set from Coachella; a blend of their own songs from the EP along with remixes and other big room tracks. A sneaky bit of Miike Snow’s “Animal” makes an appearance along with tracks from Tom Staar, Deorro, Alvaro, and Botnek. Expect big things from these two in the coming months.

Todd TerjeBBC Radio1 Essential Mix

Next up is an installment of BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix from Norwegian disco producer Todd Terje. Todd released his first full-length It’s Album Time last month, garnering praise from fans and critics alike. His essential mix is an eclectic blend of contemporary and classic sounds. Looks for tracks from Lone, Herb Alpert, Tanner Ross, Steve Miller Band, Edu Lobo, Jim Morrison, Men at Work, Traks, and Linus Loves. This one is fun, funky, and perfect for the summer.

Closing out this week with a mix from !!! for Thump in advance of their summer North American tour. An amalgam of styles are showcased with everyone from Crazy P to David Lynch featured. Other artists featured include Scuba, The Bionics, Romare, Dexter, Tom Rujig, Mr. G, and Dirty Channels. This is one of the rare examples of a band/artist actually knowing how to mix records instead of just hitting sync in Traktor.

WKEND MIXTAPE: 2 Many Dj’s – As Heard on Radio Soulwax pt. 2

We’re taking a departure this week from our normal showcase of three mixes for one very special audio/visual mix from 2 Many Dj’s as part of their Radio Soulwax mix series.

2 Many Dj’sAs Heard on Radio Soulwax pt. 2

The brothers Dewaele, know for their live band Soulwax and djing moniker 2 Many Dj’s, have a long history of innovative takes on dance music. Over the last three years they have released hour-long audio/visual mashup mixes through their iPhone/Android app for Radio Soulwax. The final chapter was released this week and offers an incredible visual experience in sync with the music. They’ve taken the album covers from the tracks and feature them in a “Monty Pythonesque” animation style. The mix includes tracks from artists including The Stooges, Kylie Minogue, The Jets, Skee-lo, The Breeders, Garbage, Dolly Parton, The Creeps, New Order, and many others. It needs to be seen to be believed. The brothers released a statement through Pitchfork on the latest chapter in the series:

“12 yrs, 2 months and 24 days later, 114 tracks are re-united in 1 single hour of visual mayhem,” Soulwax said in a statement. “As heard on the radio becomes As seen on the app..is this technically Pt III? Probably. Who’s counting? Who cares? Just watch it.”

The other 23 mixes in the series are available online or via their own app at http://radiosoulwax.com.

WKEND MIXTAPE V10: Justin Martin • Alex Metric • Miami Horror

Welcome back for another round of mixes this week. This time we’re featuring mixes from San Francisco’s Justin Martin, an OWSLA radio set from Alex Metric, and Miami Horror‘s Solé Fixtape.

Justin MartinSouth Africa Tour Mix 2014

Our first mix come from SF local Justin Martin from his South African tour. Justin recently opened for Disclosure at the Greek in Berkeley alongside label mate Claude VonStroke with an incredible tag team set. This mix features tracks from Marshall Jefferson, Boy 8bit, Gold Panda, Tanner Ross, and Shiba San’s incredible “Okay”.

Alex MetricOWSLA After Dark Part 10

Next up is UK producer and DJ Alex Metric for OWSLA’s BBC Radio 1 takeover. Alex showcases disco and dance tracks from the likes of Crazy P, Classixx, London Grammar, Tiga, Todd Terje, and Panama alongside his own tracks and remixes.

If you like what you hear check out the other mixes in this 13-part series on SoundCloud.

Miami HorrorSolé Fixtape Vol. 22

We close this week with a mix from Australia’s Miami Horror for volume 22 of the Solé Fixtape series. A perfect mix for this balmy San Francisco weather. Artists included in this summertime mix include Ben Kahn, Pomrad, Scenic, A Guy Called Gerald, Blood Orange, Karma Kid, and Jetlag. All 25 mixes for Solé Bicycle’s monthly mix series can be found on their site here.

Miami Horror will be back in the Bay Area with a DJ set at Neck of the Woods on August 8th. Tickets are available via Ticketfly.

WKEND MIXTAPE V9: Bonobo • Tycho • James Murphy & Pat Mahoney

Get your WKEND started RIGHT with new mixes from Bonobo & Tycho, along with a throwback mix from James Murphy & Pat Mahoney (formerly LCD Soundsystem).

BonoboEssential Mix

Our first mix comes from Bonobo for BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix. As a highly accomplished producer and DJ he provides us with over two hours of expertly-mixed tunes. Bonobo’s own tracks and remixes show up alongside those from Jungle, Sharon Von Etten, Dark Sky, Jimpster, Will Arcane, Kelis, Martyn, Leatherette, and Vangelis.

TychoFader Mix

Next up is a mix from Tycho for the Fader mix series. This spring-focused mix features tracks from My Bloody Valentine, Casino Versus Japan, Washed Out, Goldroom, Aphex Twin, Com Truise, and more. This is a beautiful mix that shines on days like today.

James Murphy & Pat MahoneyFabriclive 36

We end this week with a classic mix from 2007 posted yesterday by DFA Records. James Murphy & Pat Mahoney, formerly of LCD Soundsystem, offer up an hour of fantastic tracks including those from Instant Funk, GQ, Lenny Williams, Baby Talk, Love Committee, Junior Bryon, City of Women, and LCD Soundsystem. James and Pat offered up a primer for this mix:

“We’re pretty excited. We find doing mix CDs horrifying to a certain degree because there’s nobody there, so it’s just like, “What are we doing?!” It’s like you’re just yelling into the air. We bought an old Bozak for this – the first DJ mixer ever built, hand-built. It sounds incredible. Everything sounds nicer and bigger and smoother and beautiful. The mix itself will have a little bit of stuff that isn’t necessarily what we’d play in a club. But we’d like it to be fun. So we’ll just do it a bunch of times live. Do it until you like it, that’s actually our motto.”

New mixes this week from a legend who left us this week, the latest from Them Jeans, and a showcase of rap in 2014.

Frankie KnucklesMIXTAPE NAME

First up is a mix released last year from house legend Frankie Knuckles, who passed away earlier this week. The mix features classic tracks from Art Department, Chinah Blac, Joey Negro & The Sunburst Band, Eric Morillo, and The Layabouts along with his own remix of Hercules & The Love Affair.

The interview that accompanies this mix is definitely worth a read. Check it out here.

Them JeansHigh Tides Mix Series Vol. 2

Next up is the latest mix from Them Jeans as part of the High Tide mix series for spring. This one has been my bus ride soundtrack for the last couple days. Check out tracks from Blood Orange, Tame Impala, Classixx, Grimes, Four Tet, Ciara, Jamie XX, and more.

Them Jeans will be in town on June 14th at Mezzanine playing with Treasure Fingers. Tickets are available here.

DJ YodaRap is Good 2014

Our final mix this week is from UK turntablist DJ Yoda showcasing rap and hip hop in 2014. Yoda says: “I wanted to do a mix to show fans of “classic” or “golden era” rap that there’s still plenty of incredible hip-hop coming out in 2014 – you just have to look at bit deeper than most of the commercial pop stuff!” The mix features tracks from Danny Brown, Kendrick Lamar, Jay Electronica, Action Bronson, Evidence, Roc Marciano, Step Brothers, Q-Tip, Busta Rhymes, and Kanye West. Enjoy!

Welcome to another week of great mixes. We start off with Tensnake, move to the funky vibes of DJ Nu-Mark, and finish with the latest episode of Pretty Light’s “The Hot Sh*t” radio show.

TensnakeCover Mix

Our first mix is from German producer and DJ Tensnake with Mixmag’s latest cover mix. Opening with a track from Nicolas Jaar, the mix weaves through nearly an hour of tracks from the likes of Metro Area, Dave Clarke, Matthew Johnson, Kron, Kim Brown, PHM, No Regular Play, and Tensnake himself.

Tensnake is headlining tonight (Friday, March 21st) at Mezzanine. Tickets are still available here.

DJ Nu-MarkTake Me With You

Next up is a funky world mix from DJ Nu-Mark of Jurrasic 5 fame. Nu-mark sums this one up best:

I was inspired to make a mix that captures funk inspired ethnic rhythms from music I’ve collected on my tours/travels around the world from Samba, Cumbia, Latin, Afro-Beat and Balkan Beat. This mix is intended to travel with you on your next tropical adventure to paint the musical background for your trip. When you’re headed out the door for your next vacation “Take Me With You”.

Pretty LightsThe Hot Sh*t, Episode 121

We end this week with the latest episode of Pretty Light’s mix series for SiriusXM’s Electric Area. This long running show airs each Wednesday and Saturday, offering a consistent mix of tracks from Pretty Lights and friends. This week features his own tracks alongside tracks from Paul Basic, GRiZ, Elliot Lipp, Break Science (who were great last night at the Independent), Chrome Sparks, and What So Not. Enjoy!

Three new mixes this week including a mix from SF local 8Ball x Josh Damon of Space Cowboys, the latest FACT mix from shoegaze band Slowdive, and a Beatles vs. Beastie Boys mashup tribute from Wick-It the Instigator.

8Ball x Josh DamonSpring Forward Lean Back

Our first mix is from 8Ball x Josh Damon, SF local and one of the founding members of Space Cowboys. Though I’ve usually caught his breaks-focused sets around the Bay Area, I’m also glad I checked this one out. A chill two-hour mix with an outstanding selection of tracks and remixes from the likes of Ginuwine(!), Diplo, The Streets, Skream, Drake, GRiZ, Poolside, Sango, Ryan Hemsworth, and Amerie. This has been on repeat for me all week.

FACT mix 430Slowdive

Slowdive is a early-90’s shoegaze band from Reading, England that has recently reformed and is hitting the festival circuit this summer. This mix feels like a palette cleanser from the usual mixes I’ve posted here. Tracks from Sonic Youth, Can, This Mortal Coil, The Cure, Spiritualized, Syd Barrett, Yo La Tengo, Brian Eno, The Cocteau Twins, My Bloody Valentine and more are included.

Beatles vs. Beastie Boys(Wick-it Mashup Tribute)

We end with a (mini) mix from Nashville-based Wick-it the Instigator. Released this week as a mashup tribute of the Beatles and Beastie Boys, this four-song mix is more than just slapping a Beastie Boys acapella over the Beatles. Wick-it adds guitar solos, keys, and recreates bass lines to elevate this to a proper tribute. If you like this, check out his Quentin Tarantino themed remix project “Grindhouse Basterds” that can be found here.

We have three new mixes for you this week, including the latest from Goldroom, one from Chris Keating of Yeasayer, and a throwback mix by Hollertronix (Diplo + Lowbudget).

GoldroomInverno Mix 2014

Los Angeles-based Goldroom recently released his latest seasonal mix as winter winds down and spring begins to slowly show itself. Starting off with a remix of his latest single “Embrace”, the mix winds through tracks from Wayward, Miami Horror, Cassian, All the Colours, and Hero. If you enjoy this installment, the others are equally as good.

Catch Goldroom headlining the Indpendent May 30th. Tickets are still available.

Yeasayer ChrisDoo Wop REMIXED Disco MIXTAPE

Chris Keating, one of the founding members of Yeasayer, has put out three mixes from 2013 via Soundcloud. This one happens to be my favorite, though they are all worth checking out. This mix contains a combination of remixed doo wop classics and disco-tinged tunes ending with a remix of Cydi Lauper’s “Time After Time”. The other mixes can be streamed on Soundcloud here.

Hollertronix (Diplo + Lowbudget) Never Scared

Our last mix is an (all vinyl!) throwback from 2003 by Diplo and Lowbudget, working together as Hollertronix to showcase what they played at their Hollertronix parties in Philadelphia. Even at 11 years old, this mix still holds up today with an eclectic blend of hip hop, pop, 80’s dance, eclectro, Baltimore Club, and more. Enjoy!

This WKEND we’ve got three delicious mixes for you from Nguzunguzu, The Glitch Mob & What So Not.

NguzunguzuPerfect Lullaby vol. 2

First up is a dreamy mix from LA-based production duo Nguzunguzu. Check out tracks from Nova & Jory, Cassie, DJ Tiba, DJ Bison, and Cassie along with remixes of Rihanna, T-Pain, Chris Brown, and Mary J. Blige.

The Glitch MobLove Death Immortality Mini-Mix

Next up is a mini-mix preview of the new album from The Glitch Mob titled “Love Death Immortality” available now via http://www.theglitcgmob.com. Catch them on 5/9 headlining at the Warfield.

What So NotOWSLA After Dark Part 12

Our final mix comes from What So Not as part of the OWSLA After Dark series for BBC Radio 1. What So Not is the collaboration of Flume and Sydney producer Emoh. Their mix includes their own individual productions and remixes alongside tracks from Cashmere Cat, Major Lazer, Pusha T, Van She, TNGHT, Danny Brown, Boys Noize, and many more.

As today is Valentine’s Day, I wanted to showcase mixes made for today, for love, and for lust. Sit back with that special someone and enjoy these tailor-made jams with a glass of Courvoisier by the fire.

Kill ParisNow That’s What I Call Sexy Music Vol. 1

Kill Paris starts us off with a Valentine’s Day mix from last year. Starting off with Barry White, Montell Jordan, and Brandy to set the mood, he moves on to his own productions and tracks from Charlie Wilson, Usher, Tyrese, The Dream, Justin Timberlake, and Blackstreet. A perfect balance of old and new.

Flying Lotus‘Lovers Melt Pt. III’ Mix

Next up is a part three of the ‘Lovers Melt’ mixes from Flying Lotus. A beautiful mix of soul, dub, and progressive rock that provides the perfect soundtrack for Valentine’s Day. Tracks from Roy Ayers, Ann Peebles, Bobby Caldwell, Lee “Scratch” Perry, King Tubby, Donovan, Soft Machine, and Junior Parker are included.

Hudson Mohawke’s Valentine’s Slow Jams/strong>

We close out with a special series of mixes from producer extraordinare Hudson Mowhawke. Over the past six years he has gifted us with a chapter of his ‘Slow Jams’ mixes for Valentine’s Day. The link above combines them all into an epic four-hour mix. These mixes features artists and sounds from across the musical spectrum while always keeping the perfect mood for lovers.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

This week we have DJ Snake’s debut on BBC’s Essential Mix, a beautiful mix from Darkside, and Fatboy Slim’s warm up mix for his Brazil tour.

DJ SnakeEssential Mix (BBC Radio 1 / Jan 2014)

Paris-based DJ Snake debuts on BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix as part of their Future Stars showcase, and it definitely lives up to the title. His strong track selection and tight mixing make this one worth a listen. Tracks from Drake, Omar Suleyman, Janet Jackson, Diplo, Daft Punk, Aaliyah show up as well as DJ Snake’s own remix of AlunaGeorge and collaborations with Flosstradamus, Dillon Francis, and Alesia.

DarksideModcast #173

Dave Harrington, guitarist and one-half of Darkside, has put together a mix for Australia’s Modular People label. A beautiful collection of tracks show up from David Lynch, Gang Gang Dance, The Knife, Nick Drake, Frankie Rose — a perfect background to our recent rainy weather.

Fatboy SlimBrasil Warm Up Mix

Our final entry is from Fatboy Slim, who just released this mix as a warm up to his coming tour of Brazil. Energetic mixing and an upbeat tracklist are featured here including The Clash, Chocolate Puma, Robbie Rivera, Talking Heads, Armand Van Helden, John Acquaviva, and Fatboy Slim himself. Enjoy!

This week we start off with the 2013 ‘Best Of’ from Smalltown DJs, a tour mix from Alex Metric, and the latest mix from Four Tet.

Smalltown DJsBest of 2013 X Smalltown DJs

The ‘Best of’ mixes from Smalltown DJs is something I look forward to each January. For their sixth installment you will find tracks and remixes from Flume, Arcade Fire, Kanye West, Jagwar Ma, Phoenix, Disclosure, Dan Croll, and many others. Always a treat.

Alex MetricTour Jams: Volume 1

Alex Metric gives us a glimpse into what he’s listening to that keeps him going while on the road. Tunes from Holy Ghost!, Drake, Moderat, Mayer Hawthorne (Oliver Remix), St Lucia, James Holden, and more. Here is how Alex describes it:

“I’ve been on the road pretty solidly since August. I wanted to put together a mix of the tracks I’ve been listening to while on the road. Those tracks on my ipod that kept getting listened to again and again. The tracks that go on when I’m in my hotel room, in a bunk on a tourbus, waiting in airports or looking out at the clouds while in the sky.”

Alex Metric is playing tonight (January 31) at 105 Folsom as part of their Chinese New Year party. Tickets are still available here.

Four TetJanuary 2014 Mix

After some issues with Soundcloud getting this online, you can now stream/download the latest mix from Kieran Hebden a.k.a. Four Tet. His latest clocks in at just over an hour and features a mystery tracklist that has many stumped. Enjoy the lo-fi and classic house sounds as a perfect jump off to your weekend!

We are bringing you three great mixes this week, including the latest Magic Tape from The Magician, a hip hop throwback by Z-Trip, and a punishing set from Two Fingers.

The MagicianMagic Tape 39

The Magician has just released Magic Tape #39, part of a series of mixes shrouded in mystery yet always worth a listen. You’ll find a mix of electro, house, and indie dance including his own remixes and exclusives. If you enjoy #39, his previous releases do not disappoint.

Z-TripBBC Radio1 Hip Hop Takeover Mix

This mix originally aired in November on BBC Radio 1 and is now readily available to us fans in the US. On this one Z-Trip goes back to his roots, with an uncompromising mix of hip hop seamlessly blended as only Z-Trip can. As much as I enjoy the across-the-spectrum mixes we typically see from Z, it is refreshing to hear a new hip hop mix of this quality.

Two FingersDJ Set 2013

Two Fingers is the alter-ego of Amon Tobin. As this year will mainly spent in the studio, he has released one of his dj sets from 2013. This mix showcases a variety of styles on the harder side and it pounds. This is in no way a relaxing Sunday morning mix. Tracks from Amon himself, Para One, Flying Lotus, Noisia, Say Nothin, Metallica, and more are included. Enjoy!

WKEND MIXTAPE: Chris Holmes – Beatles/Paul McCartney/Wings DJ set 2013

WKEND MIXTAPE: Bassnectar – Immersive Music Mixtape – Side 2

This past week the Bay Area was treated to a visit from hometown hero Bassnectar. This past Tuesday, Lorin dropped the second side of his Immersive Music Mixtape. The mix is a faithful interpretation of his live show, minus the bass shaking your insides. More than your standard dj mix, Lorin has his fingerprints on almost every track; be it a remix, edit, or an original. I think he says it best:

On this brand new Side Two excursion, take a trip through my sonic kaleidoscope and hear brand new music as well as some vintage selections and re-creations, with exclusives including remixes of Grimes, The Deftones, Lux and Telefon Tel Aviv.
