SF Show of the Week // GO4FREE to Lupe Fiasco at 1015 Folsom 11/16 (WED)

Lupe FiascoWritten by Brett Ruffenach //

Lupe Fiasco with The Boy Illinois, RXMN //
1015 Folsom – San Francisco
November 16th, 2016 //

From his explosion onto the rap scene to who he is today, Lupe Fiasco has always been a rapper who will not compromise who he is for the limelight. A Chicago-born emcee who emerged from the “nerd rap” scene and caught the ear of artists like Kanye West and Talib Kweli, Fiasco’s best skill is a remarkably smooth flow over deep, complex lyrics.

Both accessible and robust, Fiasco’s catalog has contributed to the stylings of rappers like Nas and Common while expanding Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five’s famous single “The Message” into a more radio-friendly territory. His career, meanwhile, has been one of constant mishaps and challenges, from botched album releases to ill-conceived pop-crossover efforts to even protests by his dedicated fan base at his label Atlantic Records. Preemptive retirement announcements, canceled shows and a disappointing sequel to his seminal debut LP in 2012 have all held back the CEO of 1st & 15th Entertainment in recent years.

But with the release of his most recent effort Tetsuo & Youth, Fiasco has seemingly gotten his groove back. A fine-tuned production with the smooth-yet-complex lyricism built on dizzying layers of rhyme, double entendre, wordplay and references ranging anywhere between Steve Urkel and a Thomas Pynchon novel. Tetsuo & Youth is a redemption album for Fiasco, and we couldn’t be happier to see him return to his most true form.

Touring in support of Tetsuo & Youth, Fiasco will headline 1015 Folsom this Wednesday with support from The Boy Illinois and RXMN. Tickets are available for $40-50, or you could win a pair of tickets by submitting your full name and email below.

Contest ends this Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Chris Corner turns an ordinary Monday night in SF into an electric one with his IAMX project

IAMXBy Laura Tsu //

IAMX //
Great American Music Hall – San Francisco
October 10th, 2016 //

Chris Corner, formerly of the UK band Sneaker Pimps, developed IAMX as a solo music and visual art venture featuring dark melodies and intense theatrical production. Since 2004, the project has released eight albums, with the most recent being Everything Is Burning early last month. IAMX put the finishing touches on his North American tour with the penultimate date at the Great American Music Hall on a Monday night.

In an aura of fog and red smolder, Corner walked on the stage, joined by Janine Gezang and Sammi Doll on keyboards and backup vocals as well as Jon Siren on drums. Throughout the evening, Corner held two microphones in hand and either switched off from one or the other or sang into both. His voice fluctuated and highlighted the vocal diversity in musicianship; sometimes Corner screamed into his microphone, and other times he crooned in falsetto.

There were also portions of songs that more or less resembled spoken word, such as during “North Star”. Gezang and Doll significantly contributed vocals, whether they were harmonies in “Everything Is Burning” or more dynamic roles like in “You Stick It in Me”. Together, they synthesized dark, moody rhythms with a danceable complex.

IAMX

Along with music composition, Corner clearly identified both performance energy and visual illustration as key components of the IAMX live show. Throughout the 80-minute set, Corner and the supporting musicians were constantly in motion throughout the performance — and none of them shied away from audience energy. Corner, Gezang and Doll constantly pointed their microphones to the crowd and invited them to directly engage in the show. Their visual showcase, tactically planned and moody, featured monotone hues amassed within fog amid strobe lights flashing as songs reached their apex.

Hovering above the band were four smaller rectangular screens with black-and-white or sepia videos of hellish imagery. Corner’s bandmates even went as far to incorporate body paint and some skintight attire into their outfits to further enhance the presentation.

At the end of the set, the crowd was hesitant to see IAMX depart. Band members embraced the audience and passed out printouts of the evening’s setlist. The breadth of content, from the beginning of the project in 2004 to more recent material, still merged to form a cohesive set. And altogether, the combination of IAMX’s music, energy, lighting, video and costumes created a primal undercurrent of shadow and pulse.

Setlist:
No Maker Made Me
Happiness
Nightlife
The Unified Field
Everything Is Burning
Screams
You Stick It in Me
Spit It Out

SF Show of the Week // GO4FREE to Clams Casino at Mezzanine 9/15 (THUR)

Clams CasinoWritten by Brett Ruffenach //

Clams Casino //
Mezzanine – San Francisco
September 15th, 2016 //

As one of the fastest-rising producers in the world, Clams Casino (born Michael Volpe) has made a name for himself by combining familiar hip-hop rhythms with a unique, ominous sound. With its atmospheric synth and vocal distortions, his groundbreaking EP Rainforest released in 2011 quickly set Clams Casino apart from other crossover producers. Tracks like “Treetop” and “Waterfalls”, for example, best demonstrate his remarkable ability to meld arrangements that use vocal melodies as more of a side dish than the main course.

Over the past couple of years, Clams Casino has continued to hone his style through a trilogy of mixtapes titled Instrumentals, Instrumentals 2 and Instrumentals 3. In July, he released his first official LP 32 Levels, featuring a guest list of up-and-coming producers, hip-hop emcees like Vince Staples and Lil B, and singers such as Future Islands’ Samuel T. Herring and alt-J’s Joe Newman. With bangers (“All Nite”) in addition to brooding, melancholy tracks (“Blast”, “Skull”), Clams Casino’s productions have evolved into a style that cannot be ignored.

Touring in support of 32 Levels, Clams Casino will take the stage in SF at Mezzanine this Thursday with “special guests” billed to join him. Maybe Lil B (aka “The BasedGod”) will grace us with his presence, too?

No matter who joins Volpe, this is not a show to sleep on. Tickets are available for $20-23, or you could win a pair of tickets by submitting your full name and email below.

Chuck Mosley reunites with Faith No More for a special night at Great American Music Hall

Chuck Mosley with Faith No MoreBy Mike Rosati //

Chuck Mosley & Friends with Coffin Boy Crow //
Great American Music Hall – San Francisco
August 18th, 2016 //

If you grew up listening to alternative metal in the mid to late 80’s, there’s a chance you might know who Chuck Mosley is. For those who didn’t though, the Southern California native was one of the earliest influences of rap/rock before its ascent nearly a decade later.

Now residing in Cleveland, Mosley made his return to the Bay Area last Thursday for a show on his “Reintroduce Yourself World Tour 2016” that was billed as “Chuck Mosley & Friends.” But what some audience members at the Great American Music Hall may not have realized before arriving was that they were in for quite a treat.

Surprisingly enough, Mosley’s “friends” actually turned out to be his former band Faith No More, who agreed earlier this year to reissue a remastered version of their debut album We Care a Lot with nine bonus tracks.

Joining Mosley — who at one time also served as the lead singer for the hardcore-punk outfit Bad Brains — onstage was Faith No More’s Mike Bordin (drums), Roddy Bottum (keyboards), Billy Gould (bass) and Jon Hudson (guitar) as they performed old songs like “Jungle”, “Mark Bowen”, “Greed”, “New Beginnings” and “Arabian Disco” from We Care a Lot in addition to cuts from 1987’s Introduce Yourself, including “The Crab Song”, “Spirit” and “Anne’s Song”, which they closed things out with in epic fashion.

The show opened with a set from Coffin Boy Crow, who stumbled around the stage in a dark burka while picking up random instruments and shouting free-verse chants over piped music.

The Crux leave their folk-punk imprint on SF

The CruxBy Gina Lopez //

The Crux //
Great American Music Hall – San Francisco
August 13th, 2016 //

Crux Interpretum. How does one interpret the music of The Crux?

One might call it folk punk with a diverse array of musical elements, including the wandering spirit of gypsy, the rowdiness pirate, the unabashed soul of gospel, the fascinating rhythm of jazz, the rawness of blues and the heart of klezmer.

Hailing from Santa Rosa, Calif., 55 miles north of the City, The Crux reach deep into musical history, reinvigorating and reinterpreting these musical traditions for our time and place with colorful lyrics that paint a fable, tell a riddle and leave you wondering how you interpret your own human experience. Last Saturday at the gorgeous Great American Music Hall, they held their album release show for their latest LP Crux Interpretum, which is a compilation of their Crux Interpretum cassette trilogy that they released between 2014 and 2015.

The Crux

The Crux never cease to surprise and delight audiences, as frontman Josh Windmiller and his band are always willing to go the extra mile to entertain, even if it means coming on stage in their skivvies. After lively opening sets from fellow North Bay bands Lungs & Limbs and The Dixie Giants, The Crux began their set as the evening’s headliner with an instrumental tune, sans Windmiller.

Suddenly, Windmiller burst out of a cardboard box that had been placed right in the center of the stage. With that whirlwind energy, handmade props (true to The Crux’s style), spectacular stage lighting and a dynamic stage presence from every musician onstage, the show dazzled the audience, leaving them begging for “one more song.” With a well-timed costume change into their post-performance attire of robes and boxers, the discalced band members returned to the stage for a memorable finale.

And thus, the recent recipient of the 2016 North Bay Bohemian NorBays Music Award for best folk/acoustic band headed back home, across the Golden Gate Bridge, leaving their folk-punk imprint on the heart of SF.

Show of the Week // GO4FREE to Les Sins at The New Parish 8/19 (FRI)

Les SinsWritten by Brett Ruffenach //

Les Sins with Taraval, DJ Nina Sol //
The New Parish – Oakland
August 19th, 2016 //

Chaz Bundick is a busy man. Between writing music for his solo-project-turned-rock-band Toro y Moi, touring around the world in support of their most recent album What For? (read our community review here) and even taking that band to the Trona Pinnacles to record and release their own Pink Floyd-inspired album Live From Trona (watch the live film here), it’s hard to believe Bundick has the time to work on his electronic side project Les Sins.

Conceived in 2010, Les Sins has evolved into an excellent expansion of Bundick’s musical tastes, filling the gaps between a quirky indie-rock singer-songwriter and a foot-stomping electronic producer. His debut LP under the Les Sins moniker, Michael, was released on his own Company Records in late 2014, led by the album’s infectious single “Bother”.

As a DJ, Bundick blends familiar elements of French electronic, pop, house and 90’s hip-hop to create a rhythm guaranteed to keep your body moving. On tracks like “Grind” and “Why”, he demonstrates a deep understanding of how pop, soul, house and disco can mix together, creating a familiar, yet unique sound. Having seen both Toro y Moi and Les Sins perform in the past year, I’d take the latter any day.

This Friday, Les Sins pays a visit to The New Parish in Oakland for a DJ set with support from San Francisco’s own Taraval, a recent signee to Four Tet’s Text Records (you can listen to his debut EP Streetways here), and DJ Nina Sol, an Oaklander known for her eclectic sets as well as her genre-bending style. Tickets are available for $25, or you could win a pair of tickets by submitting your full name and email below.

SF Show of the Week // GO4FREE to Chromeo (DJ set) at 1015 Folsom 7/22 (FRI)

ChromeoWritten by Brett Ruffenach //

Chromeo (DJ set) with Sweater Funk //
1015 Folsom – San Francisco
July 22nd, 2016 //

Chromeo cannot be labeled as one genre, but you know it when you hear it. Having spent the past 15 years blending a mix of funk, electronic, soul and pop into their own unique style, the Canadian duo have reached new levels of fame following the release of their fourth full-length record White Women back in 2014, which could be best described as an exercise in borrowed nostalgia, bringing styles old and new into a highly refined, ass-kicking electro-funk album that peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Perhaps the most compelling thing about the Chromeo live experience is the combination of personas between “Dave 1” (David Macklovitch, brother of DJ and award-winning turntablist A-Trak) and “P-Thugg” (Patrick Gemayel). As the two have refined their late-disco pop style (bringing Hall & Oates to mind for many listeners), they have also built their own dedicated fan base around a self-aware, sexy, macho-yet-vulnerable persona -– perfectly suited for the kind of guy who would successfully use a corny pickup line at a bar only because he knows it’s so obviously corny.

Sporting wayfarers and leather jackets behind instruments popped up by curvy light-up legs, Chromeo truly own their own style and haven’t messed with that formula since the release of their debut album She’s in Control. Now, after touring the world and performing on the main stage at some of the biggest music festivals over the past year, Dave 1 and P-Thugg will bring their electro-funk concoction to 1015 Folsom this Friday for a headlining DJ set.

Sweater Funk will be joining the Montreal duo to get the party started. As a crew dedicated to the craft of vinyl-only dance parties, the SF-based DJ collective have focused on sharing their unique sub-genre of choice, better known as “Boogie,” with the world. Considered “The King of Boogie,” special guest Leroy Burgess will be joining the Sweater Funk crew to kick off what is sure to be a special night. Tickets are available for $25, or you could win a pair of tickets by submitting your full name and email below.

SF Show of the Week // GO4FREE to Wye Oak at Great American Music Hall 7/15 (FRI)

Wye OakWritten by Brett Ruffenach //

Wye Oak with Tuskha //
Great American Music Hall – San Francisco
July 15th, 2016 //

Just a year ago, I was at Capitol Hill Block Party in Seattle, hanging out at the main stage on an unlikely sunny afternoon. Joining an impressive lineup of artists — including Jamie xx, Father John Misty and Toro y Moi — for a relatively small music festival, Wye Oak took the stage and demonstrated a unique sound. Between the masterful guitar and vocals of Jenn Wasner and Andy Stuck’s simultaneous drumming and synthesizer work, the duo put on a captivating set that certainly won more than a couple new fans (myself included) that day.

Wye Oak have successfully carved their own path in the world of indie rock. The Baltimore duo have made a name for themselves with their increasingly ambitious studio efforts, from their 2011 breakthrough LP Civilian to their critically acclaimed 2014 record Shriek. With each record, their sound has matured more in form as they add new elements of vocal distortions, synthesizers and syncopated guitar melodies.

Though a standard strategy for mainstream artists like Beyoncé and Adele, Wye Oak dropped their new record Tween by surprise just a month ago. It is a tightly-knit, 10-track album that expands on the production style of Shriek and continues to demonstrate Wye Oak’s ambition as a band, an ambition that’s best captured in the swelling vocals and distortions of “Trigger Finger” and dragging guitar chord progressions guiding “Too Right”.

In a non-stop stream of indie-rock acts coming through SF, Wye Oak is a truly different kind of indie-rock band that is not to be missed live. This Friday, they will be taking the stage at the Great American Music Hall with support from Bowerbirds member Phil Moore’s electropop project Tuskha. Tickets are available for $23, or you could win a pair of tickets by submitting your full name and email below.

SF Show of the Week // GO4FREE to DMX at Mezzanine 6/18 (SAT)

DMXWritten by Molly Kish //

DMX with Big Von, Legends Live Forever //
Mezzanine – San Francisco
June 18th, 2016 //

Hip-hop legend, actor and Ruff Ryder for life, DMX (born Earl Simmons) has persevered through several challenges in both his personal life and professional career over the past decade. Amidst it all, he has continued to maintain an ever-growing body of work through music and acting, as well as found a higher calling as a transitional deacon in the Christian Church since 2012.

Still impacting the shape and sound of contemporary hip-hop, DMX has been perceived as a stylistic innovator and groundbreaking artist even 25 years after he got into the rap game. He has directly influenced some of the biggest names in the industry with his signature style and impassioned performances and moreover, is currently in the middle of putting the finishing touches on his eighth studio album, which is rumored to feature Kanye West and Dr. Dre.

Bringing his intense flows and catalog of aggressive hip-hop (aka “X gon’ bring it”) to SF this Saturday, DMX will be supported at Mezzanine by Big Von and Legends Live Forever on what is a dream bill of hip-hop nostalgia.

So, are you going to be there to catch the pit bull alpha and Ruff Ryder patriarch in all of his snarling glory? Tickets are available for $40 (GA) and $60 (VIP), or you could win a pair of tickets by submitting your full name and email below.

Here’s why you shouldn’t have missed Brett Dennen at Great American Music Hall

Brett DennenPhotos by Tom Dellinger // Written by Lindsay Alamillo //

Brett Dennen with Firekid //
Great American Music Hall – San Francisco
June 1st, 2016 //

Northern California native Brett Dennen put out his sixth album Por Favor last month and is supporting it with a nationwide tour that will last well into the fall. The 36-year-old singer-songwriter and his band stopped by the Great American Music Hall for a sold-out show on a Tuesday night. For those who missed out, an additional show was added for the following evening.

The show began with a performance by three-piece band Firekid from the infamous Muscle Shoals, Ala. They added a funky twist to their Americana vibe and covered a compilation of different songs with a little help from an old Game Boy and its cartridges. Their unique sound and upbeat energy held the crowd’s attention and kept the bodies moving until Dennen took the stage.

Brett Dennen

The first time I watched Dennen perform live was several years ago when he opened before Colbie Caillat during a John Mayer concert at Shoreline Amphitheatre. I would applaud him on how far he has come since then, but to be completely honest, he hasn’t grown drastically. He was, at that time, a hidden gem and is finally getting the recognition that he so deserves.

Dennen is not the kind of artist who demands a crowd’s attention. Instead, the audience seems to voluntarily surrender their attention as voices fade and whispers turn to silence quickly in anticipation of his set. He walked onto the stage barefoot, as he often does, and began playing with a sort of comfort and ease that made you feel like you were guest in his home.

The microphone that emitted the vocals seemed to be a bit low, but even so, Dennen’s voice managed to fill the room and all the hearts within it, which could have been measured by the smiles that appeared within moments of hearing his first song. He mixed up his old and new material perfectly, satisfying all of our ears. Near the end of his set, he remembered that his amplifier had broken the night before and continued to play “Make You Crazy” the way it used to be played, with his guitarist playing both parts on Dennen’s behalf.

Very few people left the spots they solidified at the beginning of the show because Dennen’s presence was so contagious. It seemed like no one wanted to leave where they were posted up because the spot they had attained was like scoring gold.

Brett Dennen

Dennen is an artist through and through. His talents can be recognized as soon as he strums his acoustic guitar and the words leave his lips. The lyrics he sings tells stories and provoke feelings, leaving just about every girl in the room wishing that he was serenading her. When you watch Dennen perform live, it makes you feel grateful that talent of his kind is still alive and well, reminding you to appreciate the art of songwriting in its purest form.

If you have yet to familiarize yourself with the sounds of Dennen, check out his newest LP Por Favor or any of his other albums before he makes his way back to California to play with the Avett Brothers this September.

SF Show of the Week // GO4FREE to Classixx (DJ set) at Mezzanine 5/28 (SAT)

ClassixxWritten by Nik Crossman //

Classixx with Satin Jackets, California Casual //
Mezzanine – San Francisco
May 28th, 2016 //

With their influences ranging from old-school R&B to Paul Simon, the DJ duo made up of Kyle Blake and Michael David got their stage name Classixx from a shared appreciation for classic compilations of different music.

These childhood friends from Los Angeles separated after high school when Blake pursued his own music career touring as a bassist while David attended Boston’s Berklee College of Music. In 2005, Blake left his band and David dropped out of school to begin making music together under the moniker Classixx and quickly became a prominent part of LA’s modern electronic movement.

With their blend of disco, funk, house and indie rock, Classixx were a welcomed change from the high-tuned electro sounds that were dominating the EDM scene at the time. Their remixes quickly gained praise from Pitchfork, who wrote how the duo gave Phoenix’s “Lisztomania” a “gorgeously pillowy synth-disco framework,” while the Los Angeles Times called their work “pure disco cotton candy.”

This Saturday, two more electronic music duos — Satin Jackets and California Casual — will set the stage in SF before Classixx share an exceptionally smooth evening of funk, new wave and disco tunes with the audience at Mezzanine. Tickets are available for $25, or you could win a pair of tickets by submitting your full name and email below.

Contest ends this Friday at 3 p.m.

SF Show of the Week // GO4FREE to Cut Chemist at Mezzanine 5/13 (FRI)

Cut ChemistWritten by Nik Crossman //

Cut Chemist with Alligator Spacewalk //
Mezzanine – San Francisco
May 13th, 2016 //

Lucas MacFadden, better known by his stage name Cut Chemist, originally made waves in the Los Angeles hip-hop scene as an avid contributor to Jurassic 5 and through his collaborations with Bay Area instrumental hip-hop/trip-hop producer DJ Shadow in the early 90’s.

In 2006, MacFadden left J5 and released his debut studio album The Audience’s Listening on Warner Bros. Records, with the title track being used for a worldwide Apple TV commercial promoting its iPod nano product.

Building on his solo fame, Cut Chemist supported Shakira during her “Oral Fixation” tour in 2007, wowing crowds with his unique approach while pushing the limits of the audio-visual world. That same year, he made a cameo appearance as a chemistry teacher in the Academy Award-winning movie “Juno” that comically plays off his academic-sounding moniker.

This Friday, Mezzanine will celebrate seven years of MOM DJs with exclusive remixes and originals of your favorite Motown songs while headliner Cut Chemist and opener Alligator Spacewalk hit the decks. Tickets are available for $25, or you could win a pair of tickets by submitting your full name and email below.

SF Show of the Week // GO4FREE to Floating Points at Mezzanine 4/29 (FRI)

Floating PointsWritten by Nik Crossman //

Floating Points with Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids //
Mezzanine – San Francisco
April 29th, 2016 //

Hailing from the UK, Floating Points (born Sam Shepard) has made a name for himself over the last 10-plus years through his unconventional approach to creating dance music, which remains strongly influenced by his childhood.

The co-founder of Eglo Records grew up singing in the Manchester Cathedral Boys Choir, and his work reflects a strong appreciation for live instrumentation. Consequently, Shepard often resembles a composer more than a traditional electronic producer.

With the release of his debut LP Elaenia late last year, Shepard has solidified his position as a composer by arranging a variety of string and keyboard instruments. Clocking in at more than 42 minutes, the seven-track album takes listeners on a transcendent journey through musical peaks and valleys while appropriately timing the descent.

This Friday, Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids will provide support before Floating Points takes his SF audience at Mezzanine for an aurally empowering ride. Tickets are available for $20, or you could win a pair of tickets by submitting your full name and email below.

Yuck set the mood at Great American Music Hall

YuckBy Diana Cordero //

Yuck with Vaadat Charigim, Big Thief //
Great American Music Hall – San Francisco
March 26th, 2016 //

London-based quartet Yuck presented their third and latest studio album with a moody show at the Great American Music Hall last month.

Formed in 2009, the band consists of drummer Jonny Rogoff, guitarist Ed Hayes, bassist Mariko Doi and lead vocalist/guitarist Max Bloom. Stranger Things is the name of Yuck’s brand-new LP, which came out more than a month ago, and according to Wikipedia, the four-piece recorded it in Bloom’s parents’ house in London.

It was a small crowd at GAMH for a Saturday night, and the wait for Yuck to finally play felt long enough. But after Big Thief and Vaadat Charigim performed opening sets, these four rockers finally hit the stage.

Their sound is regarded as shoegaze, and it does echo something pretty outdated. Then again, the 90’s revival is right around the corner — in which case, Yuck could be the sound of a new trend, a recycle of sounds if you will. If you go green on this analogy, make sure to also check out DIIV from Brooklyn, N.Y.

The Joy Formidable shatter ears in their return to SF

The Joy FormidableBy Kelly Diepenbrock //

The Joy Formidable with Everything Everything //
Great American Music Hall – San Francisco
March 30th, 2016 //

At their sold-out show last Wednesday, The Joy Formidable rocked the Great American Music Hall with a mix of fan favorites and brand-new music.

Opening for the North Wales trio were Everything Everything, an English indie-rock quartet with a uniquely soulful sound. Lead vocalist Jonathan Higgs jammed his way through their latest album Get to Heaven, comprised of heavy beats and psychological lyrics.

Releasing their third studio album Hitch last month, The Joy Formidable roared onstage and busted out ear-shattering hits like “Whirring” and “Endtapes”, only ever interrupted by lead vocalist Rhiannon “Ritzy” Bryan’s charmingly asides to the audience. Not to be overlooked were bassist Rhydian Dafydd and drummer Matt Thomas, whose energy brought a post-punk intensity to the performance that captivated the packed venue.

SF Show of the Week // GO4FREE to Lissie at Slim’s 3/30 (WED)

LissieWritten by Nik Crossman //

Lissie with Skrizzly Adams //
Slim’s – San Francisco
March 30th, 2016 //

Before ever releasing her debut EP Why You Runnin’ in 2009 under the eponymous-inspired moniker “Lissie,” Elisabeth Maurus began her musical journey early in her life.

Influenced by her mother and grandfather, Maurus grew up taking voice lessons and secured the lead role in the musical “Annie” at the age of nine. During high school, she learned how to play guitar and began writing songs to cope with her typical teenage growing pains.

After a semester abroad studying in Paris, Maurus moved to Los Angeles to follow her dream of playing music professionally and signed with Sony Music UK’s Columbia Records prior to dropping her first full-length record Catching a Tiger in 2010. Since then, the folk-rock artist has released two more studio albums — 2013’s Back to Forever and My Wild West earlier this year — and used her music to help fund-raise for orphanages in Haiti and ALS research.

With opening support from singer-songwriter Skrizzly Adams, Lissie will headline Slim’s in SF this Wednesday. Tickets are available for $21, or you could win a pair of tickets by submitting your full name and email below.

SF Show of the Week // GO4FREE to Wave Racer at Mezzanine 3/25 (FRI)

Wave RacerWritten by Nik Crossman //

Wave Racer with Basenji //
Mezzanine – San Francisco
March 25th, 2016 //

Taking his name from the Nintendo 64 game, Wave Racer (born Tom Purcell) made waves in early 2014 with his effervescent electronic sound, quickly becoming one of the most rotated artists on Australia’s Triple J and a staple for international radio stations like BBC1 and KCRW.

Despite having only been on the scene for two years, Wave Racer has already gained attention from such electronic heavyweights as Diplo, Flume, Madeon and Skrillex for his disco-house flair and aquatic remixes.

Touring with both Disclosure and Chromeo and performing at large-scale festivals like HARD Summer, Dour, Peacock Society, Falls and Mad Decent Boat Party, Wave Racer has made his way around the globe and become well-known for mixing vocal samples with synthesized trumpets and bass-guitar slaps to elevate his soothing, sunrise melodies.

With opening support from Australian electronic producer/DJ and Future Classic labelmate Basenji, Wave Racer will stop through SF this Friday to play Mezzanine as part of his fifth U.S. tour. Tickets are available for $20 at the door, or you could win a pair of tickets by submitting your full name and email below.

SF Show of the Week // GO4FREE to Electric Six at The Independent 3/20 (SUN)

Electric SixWritten by Nik Crossman //

Electric Six with Yip Deceiver //
The Independent – San Francisco
March 20th, 2015 //

Coming from Michigan in 1996, Electric Six (aka E6) played shows early on at The Old Miami and Gold Dollar in Detroit, two local venues that also helped promulgate The White Stripes. Infused with garage, disco, punk, new wave and metal, the amalgamation of Electric Six’s sound is best summarized by their first hit single “Danger! High Voltage”.

It’s been 20 years since Dick Valentine (born Tyler Spencer) brought this group of musical hooligans together under its original moniker The Wildbunch. With 11 full-length albums under their belt and some new band members, Electric Six are no stranger to the spotlight and as their name suggests, commands a live performance worth experiencing.

Back in 2014, the six-piece launched a Kickstarter campaign, successfully raising $65,000 to produce a two-disc compilation entitled Mimicry and Memories, which was comprised of 12 covers, a collection of outtakes and live performances from the past two decades.

With opening support from their friends and collaborators Yip Deceiver, Electric Six will stop in SF this Sunday to take The Independent through a journey of garage rock/new-wave metal. Tickets are available for $18 at the door, or you could win a pair of tickets by submitting your full name and email below.
