Brothers Howard and Guy Lawrence, better known under their stage name Disclosure, began making music together in 2010 in a room above their father’s auction house. They continued to gain popularity by touring the UK with live mixing gigs and DJ sets. Disclosure maintained their momentum with their first domestic hit “Latch”, which fueled the release of their debut studio album Settle in 2013 and propelled the duo to No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart, receiving high marks from The Guardian and Pitchfork.

With the raving success of Settle, Disclosure embarked on a worldwide tour before working on their second LP Caracal. Featuring vocal contributions from Sam Smith, Lorde, The Weeknd, Kwabs and more, it became another chart-topping success last year for the Lawrence brothers and was nominated for “Best Dance Album” at the 2016 Grammy Awards.

This Friday, Disclosure will hit the decks at 1015 Folsom for a late-night DJ set. Tickets are sold out, but you could win a pair of tickets by submitting your full name and email below.

Ready those shuckers and loosen your gullets, Bay Area! The 17th annual SF Oysterfest is back at Sharon Meadow this weekend, and Showbams wants you to suck up all the fun.

The West Coast’s largest oyster festival is taking over Golden Gate Park’s iconic “Hippie Hill” from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. this Saturday with an eclectic roster of music and culinary talent that’s bigger and better than ever.

The day will feature headlining performances from Canadian electro-funk duo Chromeo, SF deep house legend Miguel Miggs and Bay Area rapper/singer/producer Iamsu! (with special guests) as well as early-morning performances from post-disco buzz band De Lux, Mexico’s “avanzada regia” crossover pioneers Kinky, and local artists GZRUS and Johnny Maxwell.

Oysters, seafood and a variety of other local fare will be provided by Absolute BBQ Express, Bacon Bacon, Drip! Mobile Espresso & Coffee, El Porteno, Gerard’s Paella, Gourmet Faire, Mayes Oyster House, Me So Hungry SF, New Orleans Catering, Tante’s and Savourie Streets.

Plus, for the first time ever, the fest will be hosting a new wine and oyster pairing tent that offers guests the opportunity to sample a variety of the shellfish and caviar, along with an exclusive selection of wines chosen by a number of Bay Area chefs.

Early arrivals will not only get to choose from an abundance of seafood, but they will also receive $1 off all oysters prior to 2 p.m. Meanwhile, the crowd favorite “Suck and Shuck” contest returns once again this year, and those who are interested in participating should send an email to sfoysterfest@gmail.com.

GA tickets are almost gone but are still available to purchase here, while a limited number of tickets remain for the private tables backstage, which can seat up to eight and include a full bar, table service, table-side seafood platters, a buffet, expedited Will Call, a meet-and-greet opportunity, and an event T-shirt and tote bag. Geographer’s stock continues to rise to the delight of their Bay Area fans

Mike Deni’s stock has been rising quickly in recent years, as Geographer grows from local stalwart into nationally recognized indie act. His dreamy take on things has earned him a loyal following of 20-somethings, and this was made evident by his band’s packed show at The New Parish last Thursday.

Fresh off a “10-pack” of gigs at South by Southwest, UK up-and-comers The Crookes warmed up the room in stellar fashion. It shouldn’t be too long before these youngsters are headlining a night at Popscene with their up-tempo, dance-pop offerings that are undeniably catchy.

The room was abuzz by the time Geographer had taken the stage, and Deni and company did not disappoint. Geographer know how to delight their fans, and this intimate setting allowed for a deeper connection than some of their larger local shows in the past year. One highlight was “Kites”, beckoning back to their early EP Animal Shapes. And like that, the locomotive had pulled into station for the night and we all resumed our “normal” lives.

Taking his name from the Nintendo 64 game, Wave Racer (born Tom Purcell) made waves in early 2014 with his effervescent electronic sound, quickly becoming one of the most rotated artists on Australia’s Triple J and a staple for international radio stations like BBC1 and KCRW.

Despite having only been on the scene for two years, Wave Racer has already gained attention from such electronic heavyweights as Diplo, Flume, Madeon and Skrillex for his disco-house flair and aquatic remixes.

Touring with both Disclosure and Chromeo and performing at large-scale festivals like HARD Summer, Dour, Peacock Society, Falls and Mad Decent Boat Party, Wave Racer has made his way around the globe and become well-known for mixing vocal samples with synthesized trumpets and bass-guitar slaps to elevate his soothing, sunrise melodies.

With opening support from Australian electronic producer/DJ and Future Classic labelmate Basenji, Wave Racer will stop through SF this Friday to play Mezzanine as part of his fifth U.S. tour. Coming from Michigan in 1996, Electric Six (aka E6) played shows early on at The Old Miami and Gold Dollar in Detroit, two local venues that also helped promulgate The White Stripes. Infused with garage, disco, punk, new wave and metal, the amalgamation of Electric Six’s sound is best summarized by their first hit single “Danger! High Voltage”.

It’s been 20 years since Dick Valentine (born Tyler Spencer) brought this group of musical hooligans together under its original moniker The Wildbunch. With 11 full-length albums under their belt and some new band members, Electric Six are no stranger to the spotlight and as their name suggests, commands a live performance worth experiencing.

Back in 2014, the six-piece launched a Kickstarter campaign, successfully raising $65,000 to produce a two-disc compilation entitled Mimicry and Memories, which was comprised of 12 covers, a collection of outtakes and live performances from the past two decades.

With opening support from their friends and collaborators Yip Deceiver, Electric Six will stop in SF this Sunday to take The Independent through a journey of garage rock/new-wave metal. With the impending storm of summer festival traffic washing away the last remnants of Noise Pop, it’s time to look back at the best highlights from this year’s lineup. Serving up a bill that celebrates the diversity of contemporary independent culture, 2016’s roster was as eclectic as ever, ranging from pop stars to cowpunks (aka country punks), free-form jazz prodigies and indie-rock veterans. Bay Area venues were at capacity on a nightly basis, with crowds braving brisk weather conditions in order to experience the one-of-a-kind performances Noise Pop has spent nearly 25 years curating.

Ziggy Stardust Tribute Party with Everyone Is Bowie: February 22nd (MON) @ The Independent, 8 p.m., 21+ (SOLD OUT)

Paying respect to the Star Man himself, film and concert enthusiasts alike can trip out to “The Spiders from Mars” at The Independent for David Bowie tribute night. The venue will be participating in the Noise Pop film series by showing a digitally remastered version of “Ziggy Stardust and “The Spiders from Mars”. After the screening, make sure to stick around for a live performance from Oakland’s own conceptual tribute band Everyone Is Bowie, including visuals by local film production company White Light Prism. There’s even a pre-party at San Franpsycho (505 Divisadero St, San Francisco, CA 94117) with live screen printing, face painting, a Bowie costume contest and free beer (yes, you read that right) from Mavericks Brewing Company.

“Fucked Up But Beautiful” (Noise Pop art reception): February 23rd (TUE) @ Bender’s Bar & Grill, 5 p.m., 21+

Celebrating the flawed and accentuating the negative, “Fucked Up But Beautiful” showcases some of the work of the Bay Area’s most prominent independent artists that was never meant to be seen. Marred by sundry, footprints, bent corners and beer spills, Bender’s Bar & Grill will be hosting a full gallery of glossy disasters, which in turn have taken on a new appreciation of their own. Are you into the collective craze of Andrew Jackson Jihad’s folk-punk antics or daydreaming of being swaddled in the illustrious locks of Grant Goodrich, the bass player of SF’s own BATTLEHOOCH? As part of Noise Pop 2016’s “HQ Culture Hour” series, Bay Area music veteran and Birdman Recording Group founder David Katznelson will be chatting with saxophonist Kamasi Washington about all things jazz over gin libations sponsored by UK independent spirit purveyor Sipsmith. Signed as an accomplished protégé and part of the label’s early roster while playing as a teenager in The Young Jazz Giants, Washington has a storied history with plenty to discuss about the origins and ever-growing complexities of jazz in mainstream art and culture. Touching upon Washington’s roots, recording process and musical journey, this conversation will be a great opportunity to get an in-depth look at the band leader outside of his sold-out show later that evening.

Antwon with Alexander Spit, Unlikely Heroes: February 25th (THUR) @ The New Parish, 8 p.m., 21+ // WIN TICKETS

This lineup depicts a hometown love letter to Bay Area hip-hop. Throwing down this Thursday is a full lineup of performers looking to turn up The New Parish in Oakland. Bay Area native and world-renowned lyrcist Antwon headlines the night with his cross-over brand of indie hip-hop and will be supported by locally raised rapper and producer Alexander Spit. Kicking off the party will be SF Battle of the Band’s winner Unlikely Heroes, the hip-hop/punk outfit that promises to get the crowd pumped up.

Want to go to the heaviest lineup Noise Pop has to offer? Are you into sludgy, low-fi garage rock and sweaty, eardrum-rattling rock shows? No? GTFOH! But seriously, if you’re looking to do something Friday night that will leave you invigorated (more than likely wet and quite possibly with a couple of mystery bruises), look no further. The New Parish is hosting the dream lineup of prog rock and punk with Parquet Courts headlining a sold-out show with openers Chris Cohen and Emotional. If you slept on the opportunity to tear it up this Friday, you’ll still have a chance to go for free on us. Stay tuned!

Beacon with Natasha Kmeto, Running in the Fog, Frugal Father: February 26th (FRI) @ Bottom of the Hill, 8 p.m., 21+

Besides getting the chance to see some of the most promising up-and-coming artists right on the cusp of a major breakthrough, one of the perks of going to Noise Pop is that all the show are being hosted in venues that are known and loved throughout SF’s music scene. This Friday, darkwave electronic duo Beacon will take over the shoulder-grazing space of Bottom of the Hill for a truly special, one-off performance. With Beacon debuting material off of their brand-new EP, this guaranteed dance party with support from Natasha Kmeto, Running in the Fog and Frugal Father will be bursting at the seams inside this favorite venue among punk and hard-rock locals.

Escort with MOBLEY, COLLAJ, Push the Feelings DJs: February 26th (FRI) @ Rickshaw Stop, 8:30 p.m., 18+

Pulling influences from the legendary discos in New York, Chicago and Detroit while claiming the headlining spot on Noise Pop’s Saturday night roster at Rickshaw Stop is Brooklyn’s very own Escort. Hailed as a type of “disco orchestra” with a live show comprised of anywhere between a 5-11-piece roster, the East Coast “funktronica” outfit will be debuting new music from there yet-to-be-released sophomore album. Supported by Austin trip-hop artist MOBLEY, SF’s COLLAJ (formerly 8th Grader) and Push the Feelings DJs, this will be one of the fiercest dance parties of the entire weekend.

Song Exploder podcast with Carly Rae Jepsen: February 26th (FRI) @ Swedish American Hall, 2:30 p.m., All Ages (RSVP required)

Continuing its second year as a part of Noise Pop, Hrishikesh Hirway hosts his live storytelling “Song Exploder” podcast from the confines of the Swedish American Hall this Saturday with Carly Rae Jepsen. Dissecting her latest album Emotion and the creative thought process behind composing lead single “I Needed You”, Jepsen will sit down for a candid interview with Hirway that will lead into her performance that evening at The Warfield.

Sunday, February 28th

DIIV

DIIV with Dirty Ghosts, Creative Adult, Fine Points @ The Independent, 7:30 p.m., 21+ (SOLD OUT) // WIN TICKETS

Closing out the festival this year with a final punctuation of raw indie-rock talent, Sunday night’s bill at The Independent highlights some of the biggest names on this year’s lineup. Headlining the showcase will be DIIV, a side project from the former members of Beach Fossils and Smith Westerns, celebrating the release of their critically acclaimed new album Is the Is Are. Paired with local female-fronted rock powerhouse Dirty Ghosts and North Bay punks Creative Adult, this show will be having you question the validity of your Sunday and whether or not a lineup of this magnitude holds much relevance when accessing your upcoming work week.

While Dan Deacon released his first two solo albums in 2003, his musical journey began back in high school as a member of the local ska band Channel 59. Studying music composition in graduate school, Deacon has mastered the self-contained computer composition with classic orchestral epics to deliver a truly unique sound to his audience. More of an iconoclast than his recorded music might suggest, the Baltimore electronic musician brings the energy and engagement of ska music to his live performance.

Deacon often performs at ground level with his fans — much like we have witnessed before — leading the crowd through an interactive dancing experience. He even created both an iPhone and Android app to sync up with his live performances and combat the cultural annoyance of people staring at their phones during a show.

Deacon, who grew up playing in a number of alternative rock and punk/metal bands as a kid, followed up his 2012 LP America last February with Gliss Riffer, which boasted single “Feel the Lightning” and received favorable reviews from most major music outlets. This past summer, he proved to be one of our biggest highlights at Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival, reeling in a sizable crowd with his peer pressure and oddball antics.

Start with Nick Urata on theremin, bouzouki, guitar and piano, throw in Tom Hagerman on accordion and violin, add Jeanie Schroder on sousaphone, upright bass and flute, and finally round it out with Shawn King on percussion, trumpet and organ. Put them all together, and you have DeVotchKa, a multi-instrumental and vocal ensemble from Denver.

Starting as a backing band for burlesque shows, the quartet gained an underground following while touring the U.S. in support of its self-released albums. But the band’s following turned more mainstream when its song “How It Ends” was featured in the trailers for the 2005 film “Everything Is Illuminated” and for the video game “Gears of War 2” a few years later.

In 2008, Boston alternative newspaper The Phoenix tabbed DeVotchKa as the “Best New Band from Colorado”, and their hit “How it Ends” climbed to as high as No. 101 on the UK Singles Chart. From scoring the 2006 film “Little Miss Sunshine” to performing covers of Siouxsie and the Banshees, they continue to produce a unique sound with their incredible musicianship.

This Thursday, the four-piece lands in SF to play the Great American Music Hall with opening support from Barrio Manouche, the Spanish gypsy-jazz group. Tickets are available for $26, or you could win a pair of tickets by submitting your full name and email below.

Best known for his hit song “Harlem Shake”, Harry Bauer Rodrigues (aka Baauer) bounced around the world during his adolescent years before his family settled in Connecticut and he began producing dance music at the age of 13. Baauer started making a name for himself in 2012 while remixing well-known artists, from Nero and Flosstradamus to No Doubt and First Aid Kit. After signing with LuckyMe records, he received critical acclaim for “Harlem Shake”, winning “Dance Song of the Year” and “EDM Song of the Year” at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards.

One of Oakland’s finest, The California Honeydrops took over The New Parish last Thursday and were greeted by an enthusiastic hometown crowd for the first of two sold-out nights. In fact, this was the first time I have seen a line wrapped around the block to see a band at the East Bay venue.

The California Honeydrops are touring in support of their latest release A River’s Invitation, an album that is well worth a listen … or 10. Next time they come back to the Bay Area, be sure to buy your ticket early for an amazing evening of music.

Hailing from Brooklyn by way of Hawaii, experimental soul artist Deva Mahal, the daughter of longtime blues musician Taj Mahal (born Henry Saint Clair Fredericks), opened the show.

While studying psychology at Utrecht University, Lodewijk Fluttert (better known by his stage name Bakermat) began moonlighting as a DJ in his spare time. Releasing his first two EPs in 2012, Fluttert quickly made a name for himself when he integrated Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech into his title track “One Day (Vandaag)”. The hit single charted in the Netherlands (his homeland), Belgium and France upon release, and the 24-year-old was later awarded a platinum record in Germany.

Meanwhile, Fluttert’s Uitzicht EP appeared in several iTunes charts after its release in 2013 on Soundplate Records. Now with his popularity continuing to quickly grow, Bakermat continues to develop his unique electronic amalgamation of gospel, soul, jazz and blues with his latest single “Teach Me” from 2014.

There exists a band, belief system and business coordinated by Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans under the acronym YACHT. Named after, but not affiliated with, an educational program in Portland, YACHT stands for “Young Americans Challenging High Technology”. The movement, which Bechtolt and Evans have dubbed “The YACHT Trust,” suggests the creation of an idea into form provides a spiritual high attainable by anyone willing to try.

Bechtolt began transmitting YACHT’s belief system into music and PowerPoint presentations in 2002 as a solo project before Evans joined in 2008. After Evans came on board, the dance-punk/electropop duo continued developing its personal philosophy and embodied the result in 2009’s See Mystery Lights and an ebook entitled The Secret Teachings of the Mystery Lights: A Handbook on Overcoming Humanity and Becoming Your Own God. The album, which was released on NYC label DFA Records, received rave reviews from critics, including a “Critic’s Choice” honor from The New York Times.

With support from Los Angeles solo artist Sage Caswell, The YACHT Trust will lead its community through another experience of discovery this Saturday at The Independent in what will serve as a late-night show for this weekend’s Treasure Island Music Festival. Citing The Beach Boys, John Lenon, Buddy Holly and The Velvet Underground as some of his major influences, Albert Hammond, Jr. has made a name for himself beyond playing guitar and keyboard in the indie-rock goliath The Strokes. Releasing his debut album Yours to Keep in 2006 launched Hammond’s solo career with much support from his fellow bandmates — lead singer of The Strokes Julian Casablancas, in fact, even played bass and sang backup vocals on the track “Scared”.

After years of living the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle, Hammond opened up about his life in an exclusive interview with Rolling Stone in 2013, explaining why he put himself in rehab and subsequently dove into the making of his first solo EP AHJ. With the release of his latest full-length album Momentary Masters this past July, Hammond continues to balance life as a double agent, refusing to blend the sound of his solo career with that of The Strokes.

This Friday hours before Treasure Island Music Festival gets underway, Hammond invites SF to share an intimate evening with him and opening act Day Wave at one of the city’s most charming venues, The Independent. Releasing their second album We the Generation last Friday, British drum-and-bass band Rudimental kicked off their North American tour this month and will make their way to Mezzanine in SF this week. After the group’s first album Home debuted at No. 1 on the UK Album Charts and was nominated for a Mercury Prize in 2013, much is to be expected from this platinum-selling quartet.

From humble beginnings surrounding their debut single “Deep in the Valley” to collaborating with English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran on “Bloodstream” this past March, Rudimental continue to prove their validity through the many accolades they’ve garnered over the last four years. Beyond their studio sound, Rudimental’s energetic live show leads the audience through a journey of jubilant drum-and-bass tones. Originally a solo project by Laura Jane Grace, Against Me! came out of Gainsville, Fla., in 1997. Performing any live show that would take her, Grace eventually filled her act with lead guitarist James Bowman, drummer Warren Oakes and bassist Andrew Seward. Combining punk, folk and country, the vagabond group added to their perpetual tour of live shows with their flagship full-length album Reinventing Axl Rose in 2002 and received 4.5 out of 5 stars by AllMusic for it.

Since their debut album, Against Me! has released five albums and improved their Billboard 200 placement with each subsequent release. In 2012, Grace dropped her birth name (Thomas James Gabel) and publicly came out as transgender, laying the foundation for their 2014 LP Transgender Dysphoria Blues, which reached No. 23 on the Billboard 200.

Marco Niemerski, better known by his stage name Tensnake, emerged from the disco-ball spotlight in 2010 with his hit single “Coma Cat”, which has since appeared in more than 50 compilations. Born in Hamburg circa 1975, the sounds of disco, boogie, soul, funk and of course 80’s pop all contribute to the groovy reverberations of this German DJ and producer.

In 2014, still celebrating the success of “Coma Cat”, Tensnake released his debut full-length album Glow featuring collaborations with Fiora, Jacques Lu Cont, MNEK and Nile Rodgers, among others. The album received favorable reviews, especially for the choice to include Fiora in almost half of its tracks.

Hailing from Pasadena, Calif., Damon Riddick, aka DāM-FunK, made a name for himself as the modern-funk master when he debuted with Stones Throw Records in 2008. As a 70’s baby, DāM-FunK nurtured his musical talents through his teens and set out to save funk from “the devilish depictions of cartoonish caricatures.”

With songs dubbed “Searchin’ 4 Funk’s Future”, DāM-FunK’s sophomore album Toeachizown proved to the world that “funk is not just a Jheri Curl. There was more to it than that.” Since his debut album, Riddick has continued to produce 80’s throwbacks like his latest single “Glyde 2nyte”.

German producer Alex Rhida, aka Boys Noize, has made a name for himself as one of the most illustrious DJs today. Merging various styles of electronic music, Rhida’s innovative sound has earned him acclaimed awards, such as “Top 10 DJs Who Rule the Earth” by Rolling Stone and “Best Electronic Artist” by Beatport.

In 2005, Rhida launched his independent record label Boysnoize Records (BNR) to bring his own music to the world without forfeiting creative control.

“I don’t compromise when it comes to music,” the 32-year-old Rhida says. “I do what I think is cool and what I like and not what the market wants or people may expect. Maintaining artistic freedom has always been the most important thing to me — for my own music and for anyone on my label!”

A decade later, BNR remains independent and celebrates 10 years of supporting more than a dozen artists across 100 releases.

On Friday, Boysnoize Records continues the #BNR10YR celebration in SF at Mezzanine with SALVA, Spank Rock, SCNTST, Cities Aviv, PILO and Escor Krist all hitting the decks before Rhida takes the stage.
