SF Show of the Week // GO4FREE to Cut Copy (DJ set) at Mezzanine 7/18 (SAT)

Cut CopyWritten by Nik Crossman //

Cut Copy (DJ set) with Knightlife, Cooper SaverJeffery Paradise //
Mezzanine – San Francisco
July 18th, 2015 //

Inspired by “indie low-fi stuff as much as dance,” Dan Whitford embarked on his musical journey in 2001 when Modular Records signed the new DJ’s solo project under the name “Cut/Copy.” While Whitford occasionally enlisted help from friends, the first few years of Cut Copy live performances were mostly Whitford performing a DJ set where he sampled and remixed his own music.

In 2003, Tim Hoey (guitar) and Mitchell Scott (drums) joined Whitford to develop the well-known sound of Cut Copy, with Ben Browning adding bass guitar in 2010. The band continues to record remixes of popular bands like Jagwar Ma, The Rapture, Death Cab for Cutie, Juan MacClean, Maroon 5 and more.

Cut Copy also run underground dance label Cutters Records and continue to release albums for Knightlife (also performing on Saturday night), Kauf and the Miracles Club, Nile Delta and more, as well as releasing experimental mixtapes like last month’s A Forest Through the Trees.

Whiteford and Hoey use DJing to connect with fans and have fun while experimenting with the amalgamation of rock, disco, indie and pop that has become the band’s sound over the years. Saturday’s DJ set will demonstrate their passion for the experiential innocence music has always brought them.

Contest ends Friday at 3 p.m.

SF Show of the Week // GO4FREE to Mystikal at Mezzanine 6/19 (FRI)

MystikalWritten by Molly Kish //

Mystikal with DJ Apollo, DJ Supreme, DJ Pos Red //
Mezzanine – San Francisco
June 19th, 2015 //

New Orleans-bred, fiya-spitting rapper/actor and Gulf War veteran Michael Lawrence Tyler, better known in the hip-hop community as Mystikal, brings his spicy Cajun rap game to Mezzanine this Friday with support from DJ Apollo, DJ Supreme and DJ Pos Red. Making his debut in 1994 on local Louisiana label Big Boy Records, he became instant competition for rival crew Cash Money Records members Lil’ Wayne and BG. Mystikal gained the attention of Jive record label reps and subsequently his mentor Master P through two of his hottest tracks, which both diss the Cash Money label, before signing on to be a No Limit solider in the mid-90’s and releasing his third and fourth albums through the label.

After breaking off on his own in 1999, Mystikal hit the peak of his commercial success with his 2000 album Let’s Get Ready, which features the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs No. 1 single “Danger (Been So Long)” and The Neptunes-produced hit “Shake Ya Ass”. 2001’s Tarantula brought about the radio hit single “Bouncin’ Back”, which earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album and Best Male Rap Solo Performance in 2003 as well as an acting role in the film “13 Dead Men”.

Eventually squashing his beef with Lil’ Wayne and dealing with legal issues, Mystikal signed on to Cash Money Records in 2011 and has been seen on BET’s “The Cypher” amongst several festival stages throughout the 2010’s. Most recently appearing on Mark Ronson’s fourth studio album Uptown Special, Mystikal lends his vocal stylings to hit single “Feel Right” and is currently on a nationwide tour spreading his lyrical heat and charisma throughout the states. Register below to catch him this Friday in SF.

Noise Pop 2015: Who made the ‘most’ of SF’s 12-day indie fest?

Noise Pop //
Bay Area venues – San Francisco & Oakland
February 20th-March 1st, 2015 //

2015 marked the Bay Area’s 23rd annual celebration of independent music, art, film and more, affectionately known as Noise Pop. Running 12 full days and taking place at more than 20 different venues throughout SF and the East Bay, this marathon party is best described as the West Coast version of South by Southwest.

Each year, Noise Pop highlights both the biggest stars within the independent music and art industries as well as emerging artists performing at the peak of their games and has always been ahead of the curve when it comes to booking their acts — and this year was no exception. Curating a demographic of music fans with limitless knowledge, expectations and preferential ranges, this festival never fails to create some of the most memorable experiences in live entertainment throughout the Bay Area.

Noise Pop remains one of our favorite times of the year, not only for its amazing lineups and exceptional performances, but also for its genuine ability to bring music and lifestyle connoisseurs from across the globe to extrapolate, communicate and participate in the independent culture of the Bay Area.

Here are some of our favorite moments from Noise Pop 2015.

Most Likely to Have a Hospital Bill: Ben Gibbard

Gibbard enlisted Sun Kill Moon’s Mark Kozelek to play guitar for him after breaking his wrist before his big opening night performance at the Swedish American Music Hall. We’re still surprised the notorious shit talker (Kozelek) didn’t give Gibbard a harder time about it, considering the last song off Kozelek’s Benji is titled “Ben’s My Friend” and is about how Kozelek went to the Greek Theatre in Berkeley to watch Gibbard play with The Postal Service before proceeding to have a mental breakdown.

Runner-up: PPL MVR

This second-place honor goes to SNWBLL after the band had to cancel its performance at Bottom of the Hill due to some unfortunate bladder issues.

The Black Ryder

Most Likely to Inspire 2015 Festival Fashion: The Black Ryder

Dark, brooding and beautifully tragic. Beyond the torrid love affair story and musical diatribe to accompany the duo of Aimee Nash and Scott Van Ryper, the band embodies its self-proclaimed “Rhinestone Drone” sound into a wicked wardrobe, guaranteed to materialize on the proverbial polo fields across the nation this summer.

Runner-up: Bestie

The Vancouver outfit brought some creativity to the merch table with fun and functional band gear, such as koozies and friendship bracelets, as you can see here via Instagram.

https://instagram.com/p/zjwd2OJ5-G/

Kindness

Most Bar-Raising Performance of the Festival: Kindness

“(Adam) Bainbridge grabbed one audience member’s cell phone out of its hands and filmed himself as well as the crowd with it at one point, elevating the crowd-interaction a notch. He sang from on top of the bar at stage left, walked into the crowd with his mic and made a huge lap while singing to individuals in the audience to end the night.”

Dan Deacon

Act Most Likely to Prompt a Mind-Altering Freak Out: Dan Deacon

“Layer upon insane layer of sound interprets into harmonious infectiousness, a feat that hints at an intersection of mathematical and creative genius. The guy takes all sorts of frequencies and cross sections of genre elements and composes it all together into a crescendo of weird, atypical pop. And by weird, I mean the very good kind of weird.”

Holly Herndon

Runner-up: Holly Herndon

“People laughed nervously as a slow burn of glitch sounds began to emerge, and before you knew it, her browsing gave way to an interactive, virtual world featuring two-dimensional cutouts of people floating about while strategically-placed cameras around the room recorded and projected images of the crowd, usually catching them unexpectedly on their phones, on two adjacent screens.”

Surfer Blood

Most Entertaining Attempt at a Cover Song: Surfer Blood

These guys covered “Hey Sandy” by Polaris, aka the theme song for “The Adventures of Pete & Pete.”

Runner-up: Girrafage‘s rendition of Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the USA”

Caribou

Most Likely to Be Headlining Future Festivals: Caribou

Absolutely destroying two back-to-back, sold-out nights at The Fillmore, Caribou’s live show is currently on a world tour, hitting all of the largest festival stages in its wake. We unanimously believe that this act will be one of the biggest of 2015 and are keeping our fingers crossed that they will be filling the empty spot in their August tour schedule with a stop at this year’s Outside Lands Music Festival.

Flight Facilities

Runner-up: Flight Facilities

“… to consider booking this lineup on a ‘school night’ at a venue with a max capacity of 1,424 people was a pretty bold call. Subsequently though, it was also one that paid off in easily the largest dance party of the festival.”

Les Sins

Most Likely to Break the “Local Music” Barrier: Les Sins

“Intermingling his own material with disco classics, 90’s pop jams and dirty trap beats, Bundick had the crowd on fire and easily could have prolonged the party well into the after hours had there been the option to do so.”

Geographer

Runner-up: Geographer

With a doctored lineup and powerful new songwriting approach, Mike Deni has taken full reign of the band’s beloved history of material and is moving forward into bold, uncharted territory — a leap of faith that just might cover the extra ground needed to penetrate a mainstream audience.

TV Girl: February 25th (WED) @ Brick & Mortar Music Hall // BUY TICKETS
Trung Ngo and Brad Petering first called attention to themselves as TV Girl in 2010 after the release of their critically-acclaimed single “If You Want It” featuring a Todd Rundgren sample, which got them into a small copywrite debacle with Warner Music Group. Taking the high road, the twosome went on to release their material independently and absent of much Internet presence, managed to book several tour dates, including one at South by Southwest, and produce various EPs, a mixtape and a full studio album entitled French Exit.

Contest ends this Tuesday at 3 p.m.

Eleanor Friedberger: February 26th (THUR) @ Brick & Mortar Music Hall // BUY TICKETS
Frontwoman of the Fiery Furnaces and acclaimed singer-songwriter, Eleanor Friedburger brings her Personal Record to Brick & Mortar Music Hall on Thursday night. Channeling the golden age of California rock ‘n’ roll, Freidburger draws influence from her 70’s idols, dictating a narrative that is both personal and universally relate-able. Paying tribute to the sun-tinged pop aesthetics of timeless classics penned by her predecessors, she brings a modern flare to the classic rock formula, creating a sound that is romantically vibrant, unequivocally defined and truly her own.

Contest ends this Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Les Sins: February 26th (THUR) @ The New Parish // BUY TICKETS
Side project of chillwave ambassador and Toro Y Moi frontman Chaz Bundick, Les Sins was born from a series of 12” records Bundwick released on independent record labels Carpark and Jiaolong as “just another way to make weirder music without alienating TYM fans”. Offering a creative outlet for Bundick to experiment electronically, Les Sins spawned further obscure productions in addition to several alternate monikers, a tour CD-R, singles, collaborative interactive albums and a full length entitled Michael released on Bundick’s very own Company Records in November. Here is your chance to check out this talented renaissance man “work” it out at The New Parish.

Contest ends this Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Mystery Skulls: February 26th (THUR) @ Mezzanine // BUY TICKETS
Dallas native Luis Dubuc formed Mystery Skulls in 2011 after departing former project The Secret Handshake, packing up his belongings and officially setting up shop in Los Angeles. There, he refined his synthpop sound, released his four-song, self-titled EP and has been operating full steam ahead under his new moniker ever since. Opening for Flume and working alongside Chromeo, Avicii and Yeasayer at sold-out venues and festivals throughout Southern California, Mystery Skulls caught the attention of Warner Bros., signing a record deal with them, and in the meantime, is now working with Nile Rogers and Chic on their upcoming album while also producing his own full-length debut. Don’t miss him Thursday at Mezzanine with Blackbird Blackbird opening.

Contest ends this Thursday at 3 p.m.

Kindness: February 28th (SAT) @ Mezzanine // BUY TICKETS
Solo project of singer Adam Bainbridge, Kindness has become synonymous with a type of musical exploration focused on found work, sound sources and collaborations, all meant to branch out from atypical pop music into various mediums and creative fields. Winner of the Eric James Johnson Memorial Fellowship award while attending the Philadephia Institute for Advanced Study, Bainbridge credits his work to the “natural and verifiable magic”, of real interactions with fellow artists and contributors to his work. Playing a unique live show this Friday at Mezzanine, he’ll be performing with a full band usually saved for his festival dates and special one-off tour stops. You’ll want to catch this rare and extremely exceptional festival highlight.

With a 20-year legacy under his belt that includes over 30 EPs, an iconic touring stage show and 40-plus remixes of artists such as Kraftwerk, Morcheeba, Air, Moby and more, it would be only fair to say that Etienne De Crécy is a highly-influential player in the international EDM game. Most notably recognized for his Super Discount project that launched in 1997 and then was revived as Super Discount 2 in 2004, De Crécy helped coin the genre of electro-techno, bringing it to major rock and electronic festivals throughout Europe, Australia and Brazil. Aesthetically, De Crécy was also an innovator in paving the way of the future with one of the most archetypal touring set designs of the mid-2000’s for the Beats’n’Cubes series. The Gaslamp Killer: February 21st (SAT) @ The New Parish // BUY TICKETS
San Diego native, obsessed music lover, discophile, Dj, promoter and producer are several ways that you can describe William Bensussen aka The Gaslamp Killer, yet nothing truly speaks for the type of person/performer he is until you have seen his live show. A true character, the man exudes an unparallelled energy and commitment to his trade that even the most passionate of artists lack. Self-characterized as instrumental psychedelic, Bensussen’s unique brand has led him to work with artists such as Prefuse 73 and Flying Lotus while developing a catalog of experimental, solo material that included a “Best New Track” award from Pitchfork Media in 2012. For your chance to check out this caliber of a performance in such an intimate venue is an opportunity worth applying for, and you’ll be sure to thank us post-show when you’re gathering what’s left of your blown mind/melted face.

Talib Kweli with Niko, K’Valentine //
The Independent – San Francisco
December 21, 2014 //

Brooklyn-born emcee, lyricist, activist and politically charged hip-hop legend Talib Kweli is bringing his powerful flow back to the Bay. Promoting global consciousness that are assisted by genre-defining beats, he has been a staple in the rap game for more than the past 20 years.

Kweli’s work has served as thought-provoking dialogue between industry heads, government figures, community advocates and fans alike. Touring behind his most recent release of live cuts, P.O.C. Live!, he reflects on his legacy, shifting his creative vision and the inspiration he gets from his peers and collaborators.

This Sunday at The Independent, attendees can expect to hear plenty of tracks off of Kweli’s 2013 album Prisoner of Conscious, which he says he spent more time working on than any of his other records. But they can also expect to hear a career-spanning set of hits, none other than the Kanye West-produced single “Get By” from his 2002 debut LP Quality.

This is an iconic performance NOT to be missed. Tickets are available for $35, or you could win a pair of tickets by submitting your full name and email below.

Shabazz Palaces dropped by The New Parish this week for two nights to celebrate the release of their second-full length album Lese Majesty. Serving as an unofficial record release party, Tuesday night’s headlining show marked an important moment for the experimental hip-hop collective out of the Pacific Northwest. After catching the attention of the renowned Sub Pop Records back in 2011, Ishmael Butler — who some may know as “Palaceer Lazaro” or “Butterfly” during his time with Digable Planets — and Tendal “Baba” Marair have built a fan base that has grown far and wide since its 2011 debut Black Up. Kory Thibeault was in Oakland to catch the duo’s second show before Butler and Marair headed north for their native Seattle.

Shabazz Palaces will be coming through The New Parish early this week for two headlining dates with support from Ghost & The City and Gamera. Formed by members Ishmael Butler (otherwise known as “Palaceer Lazaro” and formally “Butterfly” of Digable Planets) and Tendal “Baba” Maraire, the experimental hip-hop collective from Seattle is one of the very few hip-hop acts to have ever signed to Sub Pop Records. Anonymously releasing two EPs Eagles Soar, Oil Flows and The Seven New in 2009, the group caught the attention of the iconic Pacific Northwest label before releasing its debut full-length as part of Sub Pop’s roster in 2011. Black Up garnered critical acclaim both locally and nationally, and the duo has been on tour promoting it ever since. Now, on the eve of the release of their second full-length album Lese Majesty, Shabazz Palaces will host an unofficial record release party this Tuesday in Oakland. -Molly Kish

June 19th, 2014 (Thursday) //

Chad VanGaalen stops by The New Parish on Thursday in support of his new album Shrink Dust, a fine piece of jangly atmospheric emotional pop. VanGaalen’s music is exceedingly dark, yet still manages to keep its pop sentiment like a ray of light through an apocalyptic storm. Dealing with the death of a dear friend and dog Lila (a love song by this name pays tribute on the album), it’s easy to hear a sense of melancholy and grappling with life’s twists and turns on the album. Hats off to the talented folks at The New Parish for putting together a solid triple bill of entertainment.

Local DJ El Kool Kyle (Kyle Brinson) got the party started with a powerful ninety-minute set of hip-hop-infused Latin music. Kyle is no newcomer. In the 1980’s he toured with Run-DMC, and has since co-founded Baylando Records, a new independent record label focused on urban indigenous dance music. He celebrates 21 years of music making in the Bay Area.

By 10pm, the crowd was ready for live music, and Oakland’s own Bang Data didn’t disappoint. The edgy Latin band features Deuce Eclipse on vocals, drummer Juan Manuel Caipo, bassist Marco Guzman, and Dave Lopez on guitar. They emerged in 2009 with their debut EP Maldito Carnaval, and followed up in 2012 with the full-length album La Sopa. Crowd pleasers at The New Parish were “Amor Califas”, “Don’t Know” and of course the self-titled “Bang Data”, which was featured on A&E’s Emmy Award winning television drama Breaking Bad. Keep a close eye on this band, and catch them next month at San Francisco’s The Independent on April 25th.

After a quick turn-around, Ozomatli hit the stage like a mad bull out of control. If you were on the second level overlooking the stage, you could feel the floor bounce as everyone jumped to the infectious beat. And when guitarist Raul Pacheco leapt into the crowd for an extended solo, the audience went nuts.

Ozomatli are currently on tour supporting their recent release, Place In The Sun (Vanguard/Caroline). This is the eighth album by the multi-genre, multi-cultural Grammy-winning band. Critics have called the record “funky, loud and fresh right from the start.”

The band will now prepare for a tour of Australia in April. They’ll be back in California come August, but no Bay Area dates are scheduled yet.

Rebirth lay down the friday night funk

Rebirth Brass Band with Mission Delirium Brass Band //
The New Parish — Oakland
Friday March 21st, 2014 //

Was it Friday in Oakland, or Fat Tuesday in New Orleans? If you had your eyes closed, you’d swear you were swayin’ to the beat at a New Orleans’ club on Bourbon Street.

A large line began to form outside The New Parish club around 7 p.m., a good three hours before the first band was scheduled to play. The show was sold out, and there were people desperate to get in, shouting, “extra ticket, extra ticket, anyone have an extra ticket?” No one seemed to be able to help.

Mission-Delerium_2

Mission Delirium opened the show and surprised the full-capacity crowd of around eight-hundred as their four percussionists boldly entered the room, marching band style, loudly banging bass/snare drums, cymbals, tambourines, and cowbells, whipping the audience into full-party mode. They continued to play in front of the audience, as a nine-piece horn section crammed the stage end-to-end, sadly leaving the tuba player and his cumbersome instrument to perform on the main floor with the drummers. Delirium’s eleven-song set ended with “You Gotta Believe In Somethin’”, and by this point, everyone was a believer.

RBB

After a quick turn-around, Rebirth Brass Band hit the stage with their special blend of New Orleans funk, jazz, soul and hip-hop. The main floor and balcony were packed. Barely a soul was sitting. It was time to dance, and get the weekend started.

Trombonist, Stafford Agee, announced to the crowd that they’d be featuring some old favorites and new material. With a group like Rebirth, and their 30-year diverse catalog, you knew the next ninety minutes were going to be fun and energetic.

Fans of Treme, the hit series on HBO, recalled “Feel Like Funkin It Up”, and there was also an amazing cover of Bobby Womack’s “I Used To Love Her”. A good chunk of the set was comprised of Rebirth of New Orleans, which can be found on the Basin Street label. The show finished up around 1:30 a.m. The crowd, exhausted, drenched in sweat, made their way out to San Pablo Avenue. The cool Spring night air quickly reminded them they were back in the Bay Area after a brief excursion to the land of the good groove.

Rebirth’s tour sends them up the West Coast for the rest of this month before they circle back to New Orleans on April 12th. Don’t miss them the next time they swing our way.

Noise Pop 2014: El Ten Eleven, The Mattson 2 & Pale Blue Dot at The New Parish

Noise Pop: El Ten Eleven with The Mattson 2, Pale Blue Dot //
The New Parish – Oakland
February 28th, 2014 //

Where to start with Friday night’s show at The New Parish. It was a dark and stormy night. No really, it actually was a dark and stormy night in Oakland for Noise Pop featuring a trio of really cool bands and headlined by El Ten Eleven. First up was Pale Blue Dot, a trio from the East Bay consisting of members of James & Evander, The Aimless Never Miss and B. Hamilton, who brought their “Carl Sagan-inspired disco” to those lucky enough to seek refuge from the blustery conditions outside.

The Mattson 2 subsequently sported a suit and tie with their gazey hybrid of surfy jazz-rock. The Mattson 2 even invited famed pro skateboarder and musician Tommy Guerrero to slap the bass for a few songs, including one titled “Cascade”. Consisting of drums and guitar, this duo (and sometimes trio) got the crowd warmed up properly for the headliner.

At this point, those in attendance were ready for the evening’s main event: El Ten Eleven. The self-proclaimed “power duo” from Los Angeles created an immense sound with the aid of a looper and heavily modulated effects. Wielding a double-neck guitar/bass combo, El Ten Eleven’s experimental sound was polished and fresh, never drifting into monotony, which looper pedals can sometimes do. Entirely instrumental, El Ten Eleven was highly danceable and funky, much to the approval of the purportedly fervent fans.

Expectations are everything for me. I knew nothing about El Ten Eleven prior to the show and was incredibly impressed by their original sound and dramatic display of exceptional musicianship. According to a friend at the show, they played some of their most well known songs, even offering their take on Radiohead’s classic “Paranoid Android”. El Ten Eleven’s vibrant live show was highly technical, musically intelligent and infectiously groovy. They are a band that is not to be missed.

You know I will be at the show next time they come through the Bay Area.

Sign, seal, and deliver your contest entries to Showbams because instrumental duo El Ten Eleven will make their way to Oakland and bring their experimental indie rock to The New Parish on Friday. Kristian Dunn plays the guitar in the band – all of them. He loops a doubleneck guitar/bass and forms lush progressive melodies while Tim Fogarty lays down the beat on drums. A great way to spend a Noise Pop 2014 Friday, these guys won’t disappoint.
