Lucas MacFadden, better known by his stage name Cut Chemist, originally made waves in the Los Angeles hip-hop scene as an avid contributor to Jurassic 5 and through his collaborations with Bay Area instrumental hip-hop/trip-hop producer DJ Shadow in the early 90’s. 

In 2006, MacFadden left J5 and released his debut studio album The Audience’s Listening on Warner Bros. Records, with the title track being used for a worldwide Apple TV commercial promoting its iPod nano product.

Building on his solo fame, Cut Chemist supported Shakira during her “Oral Fixation” tour in 2007, wowing crowds with his unique approach while pushing the limits of the audio-visual world. That same year, he made a cameo appearance as a chemistry teacher in the Academy Award-winning movie “Juno” that comically plays off his academic-sounding moniker.

This Friday, Mezzanine will celebrate seven years of MOM DJs with exclusive remixes and originals of your favorite Motown songs while headliner Cut Chemist and opener Alligator Spacewalk hit the decks. Ready those shuckers and loosen your gullets, Bay Area! The 17th annual SF Oysterfest is back at Sharon Meadow this weekend, and Showbams wants you to suck up all the fun.

The West Coast’s largest oyster festival is taking over Golden Gate Park’s iconic “Hippie Hill” from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. this Saturday with an eclectic roster of music and culinary talent that’s bigger and better than ever.

The day will feature headlining performances from Canadian electro-funk duo Chromeo, SF deep house legend Miguel Miggs and Bay Area rapper/singer/producer Iamsu! (with special guests) as well as early-morning performances from post-disco buzz band De Lux, Mexico’s “avanzada regia” crossover pioneers Kinky, and local artists GZRUS and Johnny Maxwell.

Oysters, seafood and a variety of other local fare will be provided by Absolute BBQ Express, Bacon Bacon, Drip! Mobile Espresso & Coffee, El Porteno, Gerard’s Paella, Gourmet Faire, Mayes Oyster House, Me So Hungry SF, New Orleans Catering, Tante’s and Savourie Streets.

Plus, for the first time ever, the fest will be hosting a new wine and oyster pairing tent that offers guests the opportunity to sample a variety of the shellfish and caviar, along with an exclusive selection of wines chosen by a number of Bay Area chefs.

Early arrivals will not only get to choose from an abundance of seafood, but they will also receive $1 off all oysters prior to 2 p.m. Meanwhile, the crowd favorite “Suck and Shuck” contest returns once again this year, and those who are interested in participating should send an email to sfoysterfest@gmail.com.

GA tickets are almost gone but are still available to purchase here, while a limited number of tickets remain for the private tables backstage, which can seat up to eight and include a full bar, table service, table-side seafood platters, a buffet, expedited Will Call, a meet-and-greet opportunity, and an event T-shirt and tote bag. Hailing from the UK, Floating Points (born Sam Shepard) has made a name for himself over the last 10-plus years through his unconventional approach to creating dance music, which remains strongly influenced by his childhood.

The co-founder of Eglo Records grew up singing in the Manchester Cathedral Boys Choir, and his work reflects a strong appreciation for live instrumentation. Consequently, Shepard often resembles a composer more than a traditional electronic producer.

With the release of his debut LP Elaenia late last year, Shepard has solidified his position as a composer by arranging a variety of string and keyboard instruments. Clocking in at more than 42 minutes, the seven-track album takes listeners on a transcendent journey through musical peaks and valleys while appropriately timing the descent.

Before ever releasing her debut EP Why You Runnin’ in 2009 under the eponymous-inspired moniker “Lissie,” Elisabeth Maurus began her musical journey early in her life.

Influenced by her mother and grandfather, Maurus grew up taking voice lessons and secured the lead role in the musical “Annie” at the age of nine. During high school, she learned how to play guitar and began writing songs to cope with her typical teenage growing pains.

After a semester abroad studying in Paris, Maurus moved to Los Angeles to follow her dream of playing music professionally and signed with Sony Music UK’s Columbia Records prior to dropping her first full-length record Catching a Tiger in 2010. Since then, the folk-rock artist has released two more studio albums — 2013’s Back to Forever and My Wild West earlier this year — and used her music to help fund-raise for orphanages in Haiti and ALS research.

Taking his name from the Nintendo 64 game, Wave Racer (born Tom Purcell) made waves in early 2014 with his effervescent electronic sound, quickly becoming one of the most rotated artists on Australia’s Triple J and a staple for international radio stations like BBC1 and KCRW.

Despite having only been on the scene for two years, Wave Racer has already gained attention from such electronic heavyweights as Diplo, Flume, Madeon and Skrillex for his disco-house flair and aquatic remixes.

Touring with both Disclosure and Chromeo and performing at large-scale festivals like HARD Summer, Dour, Peacock Society, Falls and Mad Decent Boat Party, Wave Racer has made his way around the globe and become well-known for mixing vocal samples with synthesized trumpets and bass-guitar slaps to elevate his soothing, sunrise melodies.

Coming from Michigan in 1996, Electric Six (aka E6) played shows early on at The Old Miami and Gold Dollar in Detroit, two local venues that also helped promulgate The White Stripes. Infused with garage, disco, punk, new wave and metal, the amalgamation of Electric Six’s sound is best summarized by their first hit single “Danger! High Voltage”.

It’s been 20 years since Dick Valentine (born Tyler Spencer) brought this group of musical hooligans together under its original moniker The Wildbunch. With 11 full-length albums under their belt and some new band members, Electric Six are no stranger to the spotlight and as their name suggests, commands a live performance worth experiencing.

Back in 2014, the six-piece launched a Kickstarter campaign, successfully raising $65,000 to produce a two-disc compilation entitled Mimicry and Memories, which was comprised of 12 covers, a collection of outtakes and live performances from the past two decades.

With opening support from their friends and collaborators Yip Deceiver, Electric Six will stop in SF this Sunday to take The Independent through a journey of garage rock/new-wave metal. Growing up in New York City’s Upper East Side, Chris Glover (aka Penguin Prison) embarked on his musical journey early in life. From joining his school’s gospel choir at the age of 10 to fronting a punk band in high school and forming a boy band in college, Glover has never been shy of the spotlight. In 2009, he made a name for himself under the moniker Penguin Prison with his Animal Animal/A Funny Thing EP.

Released in 2015, Penguin Prison’s latest album Lost in New York refers to “a journey that someone is going on who’s trying to find his way, trying to just grow up, become an adult,” and borrows the title from the 1992 comedy film “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York”. The last time Penguin Prison came to SF, the one-man pop machine was accompanied by a full band and took a sold-out Independent by storm, proving why he deserves to be in the spotlight.

While Dan Deacon released his first two solo albums in 2003, his musical journey began back in high school as a member of the local ska band Channel 59. Studying music composition in graduate school, Deacon has mastered the self-contained computer composition with classic orchestral epics to deliver a truly unique sound to his audience. More of an iconoclast than his recorded music might suggest, the Baltimore electronic musician brings the energy and engagement of ska music to his live performance.

Deacon often performs at ground level with his fans — much like we have witnessed before — leading the crowd through an interactive dancing experience. He even created both an iPhone and Android app to sync up with his live performances and combat the cultural annoyance of people staring at their phones during a show.

Deacon, who grew up playing in a number of alternative rock and punk/metal bands as a kid, followed up his 2012 LP America last February with Gliss Riffer, which boasted single “Feel the Lightning” and received favorable reviews from most major music outlets. This past summer, he proved to be one of our biggest highlights at Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival, reeling in a sizable crowd with his peer pressure and oddball antics.

Hailing from Montreal, Alain Macklovitch (aka A-Trak) has more than just Moroccan and Russian ancestry running through his blood. As the younger brother of Chromeo frontman David Macklovitch, A-Trak was the first to win all three coveted DJ competition titles (DMC, ITF and Vestax), and at the age of 15, he shook up the DJ world by becoming the youngest — and the first Canadian — to win the DMC World Championship in 1997.

That’s not all A-Trak did in the 90’s, though. From developing a new notation for scratching to blogging about music innovation and starting a record label with his brother, he developed a variety of skills to make him one of the most sought-after DJs in the early 2000s. More than a decade ago, Grammy-winning hip-hop artist Kanye West recruited A-Trak to be his personal tour DJ, and the two have collaborated closely ever since.

Beyond his countless accolades and magazine cover shots, A-Trak’s long dedication to music innovation has changed the game forever. In 2015, he started a weekly two-hour radio show “Day Off Radio” on the iTunes radio station Beats 1 while continuing to tour the world as one of the industry’s premier DJs.

Start with Nick Urata on theremin, bouzouki, guitar and piano, throw in Tom Hagerman on accordion and violin, add Jeanie Schroder on sousaphone, upright bass and flute, and finally round it out with Shawn King on percussion, trumpet and organ. Put them all together, and you have DeVotchKa, a multi-instrumental and vocal ensemble from Denver.

Starting as a backing band for burlesque shows, the quartet gained an underground following while touring the U.S. in support of its self-released albums. But the band’s following turned more mainstream when its song “How It Ends” was featured in the trailers for the 2005 film “Everything Is Illuminated” and for the video game “Gears of War 2” a few years later.

In 2008, Boston alternative newspaper The Phoenix tabbed DeVotchKa as the “Best New Band from Colorado”, and their hit “How it Ends” climbed to as high as No. 101 on the UK Singles Chart. From scoring the 2006 film “Little Miss Sunshine” to performing covers of Siouxsie and the Banshees, they continue to produce a unique sound with their incredible musicianship.

This Thursday, the four-piece lands in SF to play the Great American Music Hall with opening support from Barrio Manouche, the Spanish gypsy-jazz group. Tickets are available for $26, or you could win a pair of tickets by submitting your full name and email below.

Influenced by his father’s Roland Juno-60 synthesizer and extensive collection of dubbed jazz-fusion tapes, Daniel Lopatin began experimenting with music at an early age while he fought the traumatic oddities of puberty in the early 90’s. Lopatin spent most of his twenties developing his music and in 2009 gained critical acclaim for his two-disc compilation titled Rifts. Under the moniker Oneohtrix Point Never (a verbal play on 106.7, the radio frequency of Boston station WMJX), the Massachusetts native continued experimenting and self-released two full-length albums before signing with Warp Records in 2013.

Lopatin’s sounds are influenced by his emotional state while he’s composing. His first album on Warp, R Plus Seven, has a lot of domesticity as it was written after his girlfriend moved into his apartment, making it “such a more pleasant place.” His latest LP Garden of Delete, which was released earlier this month, leans heavily on the side of aggression — an amalgamation of emotional teenage memories tuned with his environmental influences at the time (i.e. touring with Nine Inch Nails and Soundgarden in 2014).

In an interview with DummyMag, Lopatin explains, “(The album)’s a bit of a memoir, in a way. I used whatever memories I have left of puberty — which isn’t a lot — and what I realized is that most of the memories I do have from that time in my life are pretty traumatic. So it lends itself to that aggressive sound.”

This Friday, Lopatin will bring his Roland Juno-60 synthesizer to The Independent with New York-based experimental musician, composer and electronic music producer James Ferraro serving as the night’s opener. Succeeding with their first gig at Edinburgh High School’s “Battle of the Bands” in 2003, We Were Promised Jetpacks didn’t feel like a proper band until they moved to Glasgow to play “proper gigs at proper venues.” As their sound matured, their music also became strongly influenced by Frightened Rabbit and The Twilight Sad, two Scottish groups who shared the same label FatCat Records.

Releasing their debut album These Four Walls in 2009, these four lads from Scotland gained fame as the LP reached No. 27 on U.S. Billboard Heatseekers chart following the popularity of three singles, including “Quiet Little Voices”. In 2014, multi-instrumentalist Stuart McGachan joined the group and helped with WWPJ’s latest record Unravelling. More than a year after the release of their third full-length album, they continue to tour with 24 U.S. dates lined up for November and December.

While studying psychology at Utrecht University, Lodewijk Fluttert (better known by his stage name Bakermat) began moonlighting as a DJ in his spare time. Releasing his first two EPs in 2012, Fluttert quickly made a name for himself when he integrated Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech into his title track “One Day (Vandaag)”. The hit single charted in the Netherlands (his homeland), Belgium and France upon release, and the 24-year-old was later awarded a platinum record in Germany.

Meanwhile, Fluttert’s Uitzicht EP appeared in several iTunes charts after its release in 2013 on Soundplate Records. Now with his popularity continuing to quickly grow, Bakermat continues to develop his unique electronic amalgamation of gospel, soul, jazz and blues with his latest single “Teach Me” from 2014.

Releasing Passion Pit’s third studio album Kindred in April, frontman Michael Angelakos finally steps into the light and pulls back the veil of anonymity that he so carefully crafted with the band’s first two albums. Passion Pit’s sophomore album Gossamer quickly gained popularity when it debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 in 2012. While Angelakos’ quixotic nature is not absent in Kindred, it is more refined without the distancing reverb and esoteric lyrics that were prevalent in the group’s previous releases. Passion Pit has been promoting their latest album on tour since its release and brings the tour to a close this week in SF at LIVE 105’s Scream Scene 2015.

Meanwhile, think of your favorite rock, indie, electronic and dance artists — and Remix Artist Collective (RAC) has likely remixed one of their songs. From The Shins to Death Cab for Cutie to Kings of Leon to Lana Del Rey, RAC expands their sound while maintaining the integrity of a song’s original structure. Developing RAC in 2007, André Allen Anjos set out to redefine how songs were remixed, using analog keyboards and tape machines to create his signature sound and steer away from the typical club/dance remix. While RAC initially gained popularity from Anjos’ remixes, the band released its first original song “Hollywood” in 2012 with the help of Penguin Prison’s Chris Glover and a second original track “Let Go” in 2013 that features Bloc Party frontman Kele Okereke and MNDR (aka Amanda Lucille Warner).

“Everyone in the band is a water sign, that’s why the name ‘Dive’ really spoke to us,” Zachary Cole Smith, the 30-year-old mastermind behind Brooklyn indie-rock band DIIV, said in a 2012 interview following the release of the group’s debut album Oshin.

DIIV began as Smith’s solo project in 2011, releasing three singles before forming a live band alongside guitarist and childhood friend Andrew Bailey, bassist Devin Ruben Perez, drummer Ben Newman and keyboardist Colin Caulfield. In an acid-induced 5 a.m. text followed by a phone call to Smith, Perez explained why the Nirvana song “Dive” was really about them and why their astrological water signs mattered.

After releasing Oshin in 2012, the band toured in support of its debut album and Smith continued writing, creating more than 150 songs in just two years. DIIV’s live performances contain hits from Oshin along with several of these 150 unreleased songs. In September, DIIV released “Dopamine”, the first single from Is the Is Are, their second album which is set to come out in November.
