Etienne De Crécy: February 20th (FRI) @ Mezzanine // BUY TICKETS
With a 20-year legacy under his belt that includes over 30 EPs, an iconic touring stage show and 40-plus remixes of artists such as Kraftwerk, Morcheeba, Air, Moby and more, it would be only fair to say that Etienne De Crécy is a highly-influential player in the international EDM game. Most notably recognized for his Super Discount project that launched in 1997 and then was revived as Super Discount 2 in 2004, De Crécy helped coin the genre of electro-techno, bringing it to major rock and electronic festivals throughout Europe, Australia and Brazil. Aesthetically, De Crécy was also an innovator in paving the way of the future with one of the most archetypal touring set designs of the mid-2000’s for the Beats’n’Cubes series. Enter here to win a pair of tickets to catch this electro legend hit the decks with support from MPHD, Nora Gray and Laura Lisbona.

Contest ends Friday, February 20th at 3 p.m.

The Gaslamp Killer: February 21st (SAT) @ The New Parish // BUY TICKETS
San Diego native, obsessed music lover, discophile, Dj, promoter and producer are several ways that you can describe William Bensussen aka The Gaslamp Killer, yet nothing truly speaks for the type of person/performer he is until you have seen his live show. A true character, the man exudes an unparallelled energy and commitment to his trade that even the most passionate of artists lack. Self-characterized as instrumental psychedelic, Bensussen’s unique brand has led him to work with artists such as Prefuse 73 and Flying Lotus while developing a catalog of experimental, solo material that included a “Best New Track” award from Pitchfork Media in 2012. For your chance to check out this caliber of a performance in such an intimate venue is an opportunity worth applying for, and you’ll be sure to thank us post-show when you’re gathering what’s left of your blown mind/melted face.

Contest ends Friday, February 20th at 3 p.m.

Breakbot: February 13th (FRI) @ Mezzanine // SOLD OUT
French producer, DJ and member of the Ed Banger Records family, Breakbot has officially sold out Mezzanine this Friday night, and we’ve got our hands on guest list spots courtesy of Beautiful Buzzz. Most recognized for his nu-disco remixes, Breakbot has infused hits from Royksopp, Digitalism, Chromeo and more with his signature French house flare, gaining him notoriety amongst large-scale producers and artists across the electronic stratosphere with many clamoring for the opportunity to have him rework their material. With Friday’s show marking Breakbot’s last tour stop before he takes to the high seas in Miami on Holy Ship! 2015, this will be the last chance he has to perfect a set before performing at one of the most highly-anticipated EDM events of the year. In other words, this will be a raging warm-up and a proper sold-out send-off in the hardest-partying city by the bay.

Contest ends Friday, February 13th at Noon.

Hundred Waters: February 14th (SAT) @ Great American Music Hall // BUY TICKETS
OWSLA recording artists Hundred Waters bring their experimental, indie-rock flavored electronica to the Great American Music Hall this Saturday night. Fresh off their performance on the “Late Show With David Letterman”, the group continues their spring tour across North America in support of its second album The Moon Rang Like a Bell, with the LP’s lead single “Show Me Love” appearing in Coca-Cola’s Super Bowl ad earlier this month. Kicking off what is shaping up to be a packed tour schedule leading into the upcoming festival months, the band shows no sign of slowing down, riding off the critical acclaim and success they’ve garnered since forming three years ago. Be sure to catch them now while you’re still able to experience their “must-see live performance” in an intimate venue like the GAMH.

Sage Francis: January 30th (FRI) @ Mezzanine // BUY TICKETS
Rhode Island rapper and spoken word poet Sage Francis returns to the City this Friday night after delivering positive vibes among politically-charged rhymes at The Independent back in June. Francis, who is a member of the contemporary spoken word movement, has been touring the world in support of his fifth and newest studio album Copper Gone, which he released last year on his very own label Strange Famous Records. Backing up Francis at Mezzanine will be Brooklyn underground hip-hop duo Metermaids, also on Strange Famous Records, and Oakland alternative hip-hop MC/producer and Anticon record label co-founder Jeffrey James Logan, better known by his stage name Jel.

Contest ends Friday, January 30th at Noon.

Rainbow Girls: January 31st (SAT) @ The Fillmore // BUY TICKETS
Bay Area ladies, this one is just for you. This Saturday night, The Fillmore welcomes Rainbow Girls, The Hot Toddies, The She’s and Kendra McKinley for its first-ever all-female show. Hailing from Santa Barbara and Sebastopol, the five gals who make up Rainbow Girls offer a gypsy-inspired mix of stomp folk, rock ‘n’ roll and Americana all rolled up into one sound. Just a few weeks ago, the band released its new song “Step Down From the Mountain,” and fans should get to hear plenty from its debut album The Sound of Light. The Bay Area will also be well-represented at the show, as Oakland indie/surf-pop outfit The Hot Toddies, which is celebrating their 10-year anniversary as a band, SF dream/surf-pop act The She’s and SF singer-songwriter Kendra McKinley will open things up.

The Coup: January 23rd (FRI) @ The Independent // BUY TICKETS
Celebrating their critically-acclaimed full length Sorry to Bother You and the release of their 2014 EP La Grande Boutique, The Coup kick off the U.S. leg of their tour this Friday night at The Independent. The six-member Oakland collective, fronted by the enigmatic Boots Riley, has been rocking stages worldwide with their revolutionary shows and politically-charged, funk-infused punk, disco and hip-hop for nearly 15 years. This artistic tour de force has released six full-length albums, two EPs, several compilations and numerous music videos directed by some of the most progressive talent within the Bay Area film industry. The band’s latest album, featuring collaborations with Killer Mike, Das Racist, Japanther, Anti-Flag and Vernon Reid amongst others, has marked some of its most innovative and combustible material to date. Don’t miss your chance to check out the explosive opening night of The Coup’s 2015 world tour.

Contest ends Friday, January 23rd at Noon.

WATERS: January 24th (SAT) @ The Independent // BUY TICKETS
Originally formed in Norway by frontman Van Pierszalowski, WATERS’ critical success is one based in bi-continental configurations and audible wanderlust. With only one full-length album and an EP released on Vagrant Records this past year, Pierszalowski has captured the attention of audiences worldwide with his contagious brand of thrash pop and exciting live shows. After releasing their debut album in 2011 and their follow-up EP It Might All Be Okay (produced by Grouplove’s Ryan Radin) in 2014, WATERS skyrocketed into becoming a buzz-worthy name on the indie-rock circuit. Landing a feature in Nylon, being named one of Rolling Stone’s “10 Artists You Need to Know” and touring in support of some of the largest names in the industry, the five-piece have continued their rise to fame with no signs of slowing down. WATERS will be kicking off the West Coast leg of their 2015 winter tour this Saturday night at The Independent.

Rustie: January 14th (WED) @ The Independent
The Fresh & Onlys: January 15th (THUR) @ Great American Music Hall

Rustie: January 14th (WED) @ The Independent // BUY TICKETS
Scottish producer and electronic innovator Russell Whyte, otherwise known as Rustie, brings his “Green Language World Tour” to The Independent this Wednesday. Releasing his Sunburst EP and Glass Swords LP on Warp Records between the years 2007-11, Rustie’s name rose quickly in the UK dance scene with “some of the freshest, most exciting electronic dance music,” as Dusted Magazine pronounced. His tracks from Glass Swords were even used in a British advertisement for adidas and the Square Enix video game “Sleeping Dogs.” Furthermore, the record went on to win The Guardian’s prestigious “First Album” award. Touring behind his follow-up album Green Language that dropped in August, the 13-track effort has already received critical praise in the states, with Pitchfork naming his tracks “Raptor” and “Attak” (featuring Danny Brown) as two of 2014’s best. Debuting a stunning new stage setup for his largest tour to date, Rustie will be displaying immersive 3D visuals (provided by A-Rock), along with several extravagant effects. Don’t miss this larger-than-life set in one of SF’s most intimate venues.

Contest ends Wednesday, January 14th at Noon.

The Fresh & Onlys: January 15th (THUR) @ Great American Music Hall // BUY TICKETS
The Fresh & Onlys have remained a key cog in SF’s “new garage rock” movement, but the quartet led by Tim Cohen of Black Fiction offers more than just driving, heavily-distorted guitar riffs. Cohen and his three sidekicks — bassist Shayde Sartin, guitarist Wymond Miles and drummer Kyle Gibson — also dabble in psychedelia, new wave, acid folk and 80’s jangle pop. With their catalog spread across multiple record labels, they’ve found a more permanent home in Brooklyn’s own Mexican Summer, which released their 2012 LP Long Slow Dance, 2013 EP Soothsayer and latest full-length album House of Spirits last year. Headlining their 10-year anniversary show at the Great American Music Hall on a Thursday night with support from Cool Ghouls, Mr. Elevator & the Brain Hotel and Fine Points, this local foursome will be ready to give the hometown crowd a night it won’t forget.

Ah, year-end lists — they’re an exercise in subjectivity and personal experience if there has ever been one. But what better way is there to learn from each other and discover some great new music while capping off the year and beginning anew?

So, without further ado, Showbams presents The Bam Team’s five favorite shows, albums and songs from 2014.

The 25 Best Live Music Acts of 2014

Top 5 Shows of 2014
1. Darkside at The Fillmore – San Francisco, CA – January 24th
Looking at my top five shows list for 2014, it appears I favor the weird, ya know, the good weird. This Darkside performance, the only SF show ever (for now) since Nicolas Jaar and Dave Harrington have put the project on indefinite hold, had patrons at The Fillmore in SF breathing and moving in unison. There was a magical feeling in the air as the hybrid of electronic and organic played out wonderfully with the duo tipping their hat to the past and setting a new standard for the brave new future of live music.

2. Panda Bear at The Fillmore – San Francisco, CA – May 22nd
3. tUnE-yArDs at The Fillmore – San Francisco, CA – June 6th
4. Phish at MGM Grand – Las Vegas, NV – October 31st
5. Volcano Choir at The Fillmore – San Francisco, CA – January 21st

Top 5 Albums of 2014
1. Run the JewelsRun the Jewels 2
Ever since Jamie and Mikey blew my mind performing Run the Jewels almost in its entirety at The Independent in August of 2013, I’ve been a loyal RTJ soldier. And without taking a break, El Producto and Killer Mike stepped it up to an even higher plateau with their production precision, an uncanny balance of fun and intense, while lyrically honing more on the important issues of our time. Sensing the unstoppable momentum, Run the Jewels are already heading back into the studio for Run the Jewels 3. When Mike was recently asked if they’d continue to name their albums numerically, he said “Why not?!? Zeppelin did it!” Exactly. Say it with me now: Festival headliners circa 2016?

2. The War on DrugsLost in the Dream
3. D’Angelo – Black Messiah
4. Aphex TwinSyro
5. The Antlers – Familiars

Top 5 Songs of 2014
1. Sturgill Simpson – “Turtles All the Way Down”
This is country music turned on its head, while staying mostly true to the hallmarks of the genre. Lyrically subversive while instrumentally emotive to the core, this song kept me coming back throughout 2014. It’s positive message of love winning over all else is certainly timeless, but when was the last time you heard a country tune tell a story of mind over matter transcendence? “There’s a gateway in our minds that leads somewhere out there, far beyond this place / Where reptile aliens made of light, cut you up and pull out all your pain.” Stirgill Simpson is as progressive as you can get within the realm of Americana, urging the listener to both think and feel.

2. St. Vincent – “Digital Witness”
3. Future Islands – “Seasons (Waiting on You)”
4. FKA twigs – “Two Weeks”
5. Flying Lotus – “Never Catch Me” feat. Kendrick Lamar

Top 5 Shows of 2014
1. Nine Inch Nails & Soundgarden at Red Rocks Amphitheatre – Morrison, CO – July 21st
What a dream come true. Having the opportunity to see two of my favorite childhood bands at one of the best venues in the country would be hard to beat any year, let alone in 2014. Sharing the bill with Soundgarden on this tour, Trent Reznor made the most of a minimalist stage setup and trimmed-down lineup of sidekicks. Of the four shows (Red Rocks, Chula Vista, Irvine and Hollywood) I saw on this tour, this one felt particularly special. If this was one of the last times I ever got to see Nine Inch Nails perform live, it was a night I will never forget.

2. Jack White at The Fonda Theatre – Los Angeles, CA – June 10th
3. Cinquanta featuring Puscifer, A Perfect Circle and Failure at The Greek Theatre – Los Angeles, CA – May 10th
4. Queens of the Stone Age at The Forum – Los Angeles, CA – October 31st
5. Tool at Valley View Casino Center – San Diego, CA – March 16th

Top 5 Albums of 2014
1. The Black KeysTurn Blue
Akron’s favorite rockers answered the call this year, following up their Grammy-winning album El Camino with arguably their most ambitious effort to date — especially when you consider the turmoil that surrounded Dan Auerbach’s life at the time of its recording. Over the last five years, the Keys have become one of rock’s biggest bands, but they haven’t stopped taking risks as a result. Turn Blue dabbles in a myriad of styles, from the psychedelic sound of Pink Floyd on its opening track “Weight of Love” to the hip-hop groove on “10 Lovers.” For as many critics as they have, Auerbach and Patrick Carney have come a long way since their early years as strictly a blues duo.

2. The War on DrugsLost in the Dream
3. Jack WhiteLazaretto
4. Aphex TwinSyro
5. Death from Above 1979The Physical World

Top 5 Songs of 2014
1. Jack White – “High Ball Stepper”
Jack White seems to be on another level these days. The former White Stripe has grown into one of rock ‘n’ roll’s most exciting talents, and this blues-heavy, instrumental track showcases that better than any other offering on Lazaretto. White’s ferocious guitar riffs dominate the tune, taking listeners on an emotional roller coaster from start to finish. And when he plays “High Ball Stepper” live, the song takes on a new whole life of its own.

2. Foo Fighters – “Something for Nothing”
3. Interpol – “All the Rage Back Home”
4. TV on the Radio – “Happy Idiot”
5. Tycho – “Awake”

Top 5 Shows of 2014
1. Jack White at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium – San Francisco, CA – August 22nd
From the dramatic curtain drop that slammed into high-octane rock, this show never let off the gas. Even with a bum ankle, Jack White stalked the stage and held power over the crowd. When the slowest moments of a show are White Stripes ballads that you’re giddy to hear and the other half of the show is headbanging, guitar-slinging rock, it’s easy to see how this show cemented itself as the best of 2014.

2. Atomic Bomb! The Music of William Onyeabor at The Warfield – San Francisco, CA – May 6th
3. The War on Drugs at The Independent – San Francisco, CA – April 1st
4. Run the Jewels at Mezzanine – San Francisco, CA – November 14th
5. Duck Sauce at Outside Lands Music Festival – August 9th

Top 5 Albums of 2014
1. Flying LotusYou’re Dead!
This album makes me feel like I’m actually traveling through the underworld to the land of the dead. From front to back, the first thing that caught me about this album was its consistent message. Steven Ellison has an inviting sense of storytelling that’s infused with hip-hop but touches on an array of different music styles, involving a star-studded cast of guests, including Kendrick Lamar, Thundercat and Snoop Dog. I have a feeling Flying Lotus is on the forefront of creative hip-hop and that this album will prove to be influential down the line. More importantly, I just love listening to it. Taking wild turns from frenetic to serene, listening to this album from start to finish is a journey.

2. Aphex TwinSyro
3. Run the JewelsRun the Jewels 2
4. Future IslandsSingles
5. Tweedy – Sukierae

Top 5 Songs of 2014
1. Run the Jewels – “Oh My Darling Don’t Cry”
The minimalist production and deep, rumbling bass frequencies have helped this track become my No. 1 listened to on the album and also No. 1 for the year. The complimentary flow that El-P and Killer Mike have together is on display in this track. This cut has infected my brain like a virus (the good kind?), and I just can’t get enough.

2. Future Islands – “Seasons (Waiting on You)”
3. Sam Smith – “I’m Not the Only One”
4. Flying Lotus – “Never Catch Me” feat. Kendrick Lamar
5. Perfume Genius – “Queen”

Top 5 Shows of 2014
1. Future Islands at Coachella Music and Arts Festival, Weekend 1 – Indio, CA – April 12th
It’s been a banner year for the Baltimore darlings we have grown to love as Future Islands. Breaking through the underground touring circuit to being a highly sought-after festival act was quick and clean as the passionate stage performance of Samuel Harrington could not be ignored by growing audiences. A packed Gobi Tent was eating from the frontman’s palm as Herrington poured himself out on stage, belting out a set heavy on new tracks and old favorites. It was a pivotal point where both the band and audience knew that Future Islands had arrived at the next stage of their career.

2. The Cure at BottleRock Napa Valley – Napa, CA – May 30th
3. Phish at MGM Grand Arena – Las Vegas, NV – October 31st
4. Connan Mockasin at The Independent – San Francisco, CA – May 15th
5. Deerhoof at Great American Music Hall – San Francisco, CA – November 18th

Top 5 Albums of 2014
1. The War on DrugsLost in the Dream
Adam Granduciel had one helluva 2014 to brag about. His third studio album Lost in the Dream was an overwhelming success, and all for good reason as the lush waves of rock swell over the listener like a warm Christmas sweater, just less ugly than the one you wore to that one party. “Under the Pressure” opens this release in epic fashion and does not let up from there. Guitar rock is not dead!

2. Todd Terje – It’s Album Time
3. Run the JewelsRun the Jewels 2
4. D’Angelo – Black Messiah
5. White Fence – For the Recently Found Innocent

Top 5 Songs of 2014
1. Flying Lotus – “Never Catch Me” (feat. Kendrick Lamar)
Steven Ellison’s left-field meditation on death, as demonstrated on 2014’s release You’re Dead!, is not for everyone and is more about the full album than the sum of its parts (tracks). However, there is one shining beacon of a collaboration that could not be cast aside in the form of “Never Catch Me”. The partnership of one of the hottest MCs with one of the most sought-after producers was meant to be a brutally infectious slice of off-kilter street music.

2. Caribou – “Can’t Do Without You”
3. Future Islands – “Seasons (Waiting on You)”
4. Beck – “Blue Moon”
5. Ariel Pink – “Put Your Number in My Phone”

Pete Mauch // Los Angeles

Top 5 Shows of 2014
1. Phish at MGM Grand – Las Vegas, NV – October 31st
Phish has made the tradition of covering other artists albums on Halloween, and this year they completely outdid themselves by covering essentially an album of only narrative and spooky sounds. The Disney-produced album The Thrilling and Chilling Sounds of the Taunted House was turned into a rock opera of sorts as Trey and company worked through completely new songs based off just minimal sounds, but the night didn’t just end there. The band played this rock opera sandwiched between two very strong sets of original Phish songs that could have held its own alone.

2. Lettuce’s Late Night in Red Barn at Summer Camp Music Festival – Chillicothe, IL – May 22nd
3. Future Islands at Coachella Music and Arts Festival, Weekend 1 – Indio, CA – April 12th
4. Ryan Adams at The Fox Theater Pomona – Pomona, CA – October 11th
5. Todd Terje at FYF Fest – Los Angeles – August 24th

Top 5 Albums of 2014
1. Ryan Adams – Ryan Adams
When someone as prolific as Ryan Adams puts out a new record, you buy that record and you listen intently. The songs in his first self-titled album may seem simple at first listen, but they stay with you in the back of your mind until you just can’t take it and you re-listen again and again. This is exactly how what I’ve been doing the past few months since the release. Songs like “Gimme Something Good” and “Am I Safe” prove once again that Adams is still on top of his game.

2. The War on DrugsLost in the Dream
3. moe. – No Guts, No Glory
4. Todd Terje – It’s Album Time
5. Greensky Bluegrass – If Sorrows Swim

Top 5 Songs of 2014
1. Future Islands – “Seasons (Waiting on You)”
“People change / You know but some people never do / You know when people change, they gain a piece but they lose one too.” These lyrics are so uplifting and real, and the music to accompany these amazing lyrics ties the emotion perfectly together.

2. The War on Drugs – “Under the Pressure”
3. The Barr Brothers – “Come in the Water”
4. Temples – “Shelter Song”
5. Caribou – “Can’t Do Without You”

Top 5 Shows of 2014
1. Darkside at The Fillmore – San Francisco, CA – January 24th
The album Nicolas Jaar and Dave Harrington put together in 2013 was a delight for the ears, but with the show they played at The Fillmore, they were going after every sense in your body. Jaar once said that Darkside’s music was more experiential rather than musical, and they surely succeeded in delivering one of the best musical experiences to all the lucky attendants on that cold January night.

2. Future Islands at The Chapel – San Francisco, CA – April 10th
3. St. Vincent at The Fox Theater Oakland – Oakland, CA – March 22nd
4. James Blake at The Chapel – San Francisco, CA – December 7th
5. Old Crow Medicine Show at The Masonic – San Francisco, CA – September 20th

Top 5 Albums of 2014
1. BeckMorning Phase
Beck’s Morning Phase follows the same breezy style as Sea Change, but the latter’s serenity seems to come from darker places. Morning Phase is, as the title suggests, a bit brighter and sets the tone for all the good things yet to come.

2. Run the JewelsRun the Jewels 2
3. Real EstateAtlas
4. The War on DrugsLost in the Dream
5. Perfume Genius – Too Bright

Top 5 Songs of 2014
1. alt-J – “Nara”
It is hard to isolate “Nara” as the best song of Alt-J’s latest album This is All Yours since the story told in it is not exclusive to that song and it comes back in different sections of the album (as well as in some of the musical arrangements). But “Nara”, a song about love, deserves to be listened again and again. The 2:58 mark is bliss to my ears.

2. tUnE-yArDs – “Water Fountain”
3. Run the Jewels – “Love Again”
4. Perfume Genius – “Fool”
5. Angel Olsen – “Hi-Five”

Top 5 Shows of 2014
1. Nine Inch Nails & Soundgarden at Shoreline Amphitheatre – Mountain View, CA – August 24th
I had never seen either band live before and based on my experience, it was like they had never broken up or aged since the ’90s. Amazing stage/light shows to go along with what was hands down my most eagerly anticipated show of the year.

2. Cibo Matto at Slim’s – San Francisco, CA – February 26th

I feel bad telling friends about how great this show was since so few people were able to get tickets. An intimate venue hosting such a phenomenal artist was a no-brainer for my top pick. James covered hits from his albums as well as debuted new tracks and an incredible interlude of house jams. I just wish more friends could have seen this!

Top 5 Shows of 2014
1. MIA at Shoreline Amphitheatre for BFD 2014 – Mountain View, CA – June 1st
It had been four years since I saw MIA live and even though I’d prefer to see her play her own show rather than a set at a music festival, I was super excited to see her at BFD last summer. It was the first time in nearly 10 years that my cousin and I went to LIFE105’s annual summer show together. We lucked out and upgraded our tickets just in time to see MIA’s performance. Both of us were out of our seats, singing and dancing along to every song as soon as her set started. I was beside myself as MIA herself made her way off the stage, up into the seats of the venue and stopped near our row to spit lyrics as fans gathered and danced around her, myself included. I still can’t believe I danced with MIA!

Top 5 Albums of 2014
1. Sylvan Esso – Sylvan Esso
When I covered Sylvan Esso at The Fillmore earlier this year (when they opened for tUnE-yArDs), I had no idea who they were but ended up leaving the show a fan. Their self-titled debut album is an uplifting mix of danceable electropop tracks and indie rock that’s easy to lose yourself in. Their sparkly, layered and melodic sounds translate well whether you’re listening to the album or seeing them live. Sylvan Esso is one of three albums I bought in 2014, and it’s been on repeat ever since I picked it up.

2. Glass Animals – Zaba
3. Die Antwoord – Donker Mag
4. Iggy Azalea – The New Classic
5. First Aid Kit – Stay Gold

Top 5 Songs of 2014
1. Tove Lo – “Habits (Stay High)”
I really enjoy the simple percussion-driven melody and voluptuous vocals of Tove Lo’s hit single “Habits (Stay High)”. The subtle, yet engaging buildup to her belting, emotionally-charged lyrics has me singing along and turning it up every time I hear it on the radio. While it is very catchy, it’s not a super dancey song. However, it is a great go-to for karaoke.

2. Die Antwoord – “Rat Trap 666”
3. Sylvan Esso – “Hey Mami”
4. First Aid Kit – “My Silver Lining”
5. The Dead Weather – “Buzzkill(er)”

Chi-town mashup giants Aaron Brink and Steve Reidell, aka The Hood Internet, bring their legendary remixes to the Mezzanine this Saturday with support from MPHD, Sad Andy and Nanosaur. A brotherhood led by Chris Robinson conjures connectedness & growth

CRB_postBy Kory Thibeault //

Chris Robinson Brotherhood //
Great American Music Hall – San Francisco
November 23rd, 2014 //

Chris Robinson Brotherhood, otherwise known as CRB, wrapped up a spectacular run at the Great American Music Hall, the obvious venue of choice for the Los Angeles-based band.

I was fortunate enough to catch two nights of what I can only assume were four spectacular nights in SF. Rather than attempt to create some “new” sound, CRB root themselves deep in psych-rock while exploring the genre with their own flair. Is there a better place to do so than right here in the San Francisco Bay?

CRB_post4

Frankly, there may not be. Our venues were so often graced by the likes of Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead, groups that redefined the concert experience. In that same tradition, CRB pushes the boundaries of the very songs they pen, inviting their audience along for the aural journey that seems to flow out of them so effortlessly. Is this why they are called the Brotherhood rather than the Chris Robinson Band? I certainly believe so.

A brotherhood conjures notions of connectedness and growth. After enjoying CRB’s music upwards of eight hours this weekend, I feel confident when I say that is exactly what this band is doing: growing together. The kinship of Neal Casal and Chris Robinson’s guitar is certainly telling of this, but the congruence does not end there.

CRB_post2

Keyboardist Adam McDougall crafts an ethereal layer of sound, which infuses CRB with the psychedelia needed to push the group into those outer dimensions of space. This group is undoubtedly the sum of its parts.

Currently on tour promoting their third full-length album Phosphorescent Harvest, CRB has fortified lead singer Chris Robinson’s claim of being “a farm-to-table psychedelic band,” a self-defining statement that plays well off this concept of a “Phosphorescent Harvest.” The palpable excitement of their audience cultivated more-than-noteworthy performances that radiated throughout the weekend. And so it seems that CRB have a far greater idea of who they are and where they are heading than even the most prudent of fans.

Deerhoof continue to redefine themselves

Deerhoof with Crystal Skulls and Go Dark //
Great American Music Hall – San Francisco
November 18th, 2014 //

It’s been about 20 years since the formation of Deerhoof, and the San Francisco natives show no sign of slowing down, in fact, quite the opposite is in process. One cannot think of this band in conventional terms as they truly are not conventional in any way; they don’t fit into any genre, they don’t follow traditional timing and basically shatter their fans expectations with each album and tour. Helmed by rhythmic mad scientist, Greg Saunier, Deerhoof’s show on Tuesday at the Great American served as an extension of the boundary-pushing tendencies these locals have cultivated over the past couple of decades.

A sold out crowd welcomed the act with revelry as they started out the show in a jazzy, dreamy intro (“Mirror Monster”) before launching into the blistering track, “Exit Only”. This one-two punch fully demonstrated the range of sound that band has always exhibited, and continues to pump out via their latest release on PolyVinyl, La Isla Bonita. The juxtaposition of thrashed-out instrumentation, insanely tight drumming and mousy vocals of one Satomi Matsuzaki creates something fully unique that words do little justice to describe. John Dietrich and Ed Rodriguez are the 2-man guitar team who blanket attendees in a pysched-out wave of prog-leaning segments.

Deerhoof_post2

One of the biggest take-aways from this show was the ever evolving musical dialect that Deerhoof have created for them, and them alone. The 4 members share a vernacular on stage that only they speak. Greg’s musical training allow him to ebb and flow with the other members on stage; never playing over Satomi’s dainty vocals while allowing Dietrich to expand on his freakish chords. While the band played heavy off the 2014 release, they sprinkled in some crowd favorites in the form of “Dummy Discards a Heart” and the ever-popular, “Twin Killers”.

As Saunier addressed the adoring crowd, it was clear that San Francisco loves Deerhoof and they love us right back. The audience was treated to some hilarious fits of banter from multiple band members as they took a stroll down memory lane, regaling in tales of the early days of the act. One can hope they continue on for another decade as they are truly the definition of indie DIY while continuously keeping their listeners on their feet, whether that’s on their self-produced records or in the fiery heat of their live show. Deerhoof cannot be cast aside anymore.

LP with Odessa //
Great American Music Hall – San Francisco
September 21st, 2014 //

Laura Pergolizzi, stage name LP, will be gracing Great American Music Hall on September 21st, and will be bringing with her a heavy arsenal of delicious pop missiles to fire upon the audience. If you’ve never heard of Laura’s solo work, there is a significant chance that you have heard her work having spent a good portion of her career writing/co-writing songs for the likes of Rhianna, The Backstreet Boys, and Cher to name a few. Her solo work has seen high praise, attracting Cracker/Camper Van Beethoven’s David Lowery to produce her debut album, as well as seeing multi-platinum award winning producer Rob Cavallo (Green Day, Goo Goo Dolls) for her latest release, Forever For Now.

Opening the show is Santa Rosa native (now residing in Los Angeles), Odessa. After spending several years as a backing violinist in multiple bands, a near fatal bike accident inspired her to focus on her own material. Odessa’s debut EP was released September 16th. A recent appearance on “The Queen Latifah Show”, and having her new single “I Will Be There” appear on a new Subaru ad campaign indicate that we should expect to see much more from her in the near future. -Andrew Pohl

All hell breaks loose as homegrown talent Luce, The Ponies work GAMH

The Ponies closing things down at Great American Music Hall on September 5th

The Ponies closing things down at Great American Music Hall on September 5th

By Tom Dellinger //

The Ponies, Luce with New American Farmers, Melissa Phillips and James DePrato //
Great American Music Hall – San Francisco
September 5th, 2014 //

It was a stunning evening of all local artists/bands at the Great American Music Hall this past Friday night with a bill that brought together many of the writers and musicians we see working routinely about the bay area music scene. It was a glimpse into the musical richness that has historically defined San Francisco.

Melissa-Phillips-at-Great American Music Hall-03

Opening the evening was talented writer and singer Melissa Phillips, a solid writer and performer who’s been steadily building a fan base both here and abroad. Joined by 3/4 of Chuck Prophet’s Mission Express (James DePrato, Kevin T. White and Vicente Rodriguez), they delivered a set of many of her excellent tunes. Phillips is an indie artist well worth going out to see and hear.

New-American-Farmers-at-Great American Music Hall-01

New American Farmers (formerly Mars, Arizona) took the energy up a bit as they brought their country flavored tunes to the stage. Joined by Dave Zirbel on pedal steel, Nigel Phillips on drums and Kevin T White on bass, Paul M Knowles and his partner in song, Nicole Storto doled out a healthy serving of rich harmonies as they featured many of the songs on their latest offering, The Farmacology Sessions. Solid songwriting, sharp as a tack vocals and an excellent band behind them made their set one of the most memorable of the night.

Luce-at-Great American Music Hall-16

All hell broke loose as Luce took the stage in the #3 slot. Known for having extended periods of time between live performances, on Friday, they played a tight, high energy set; the kind that constant touring can sometimes create. Tom Luce was in excellent form vocally and appeared (pardon the pun)….loose and comfortable. Relaxed and ready to deliver. The band too, felt like they were wound up like a coil and as soon as the set started, one could sense the release of that coil. The crowd responded in kind as a party atmosphere quickly took over. It must be pointed out that Dylan Brock on guitar is not only one of the most enjoyable players to watch, but he’s also a player with remarkable technique and instincts; all on full display on Friday night.

The-Ponies-at-Great American Music Hall-02

Closing out the evening, once again, James DePrato returned as he joined Elliot Randall and Heather Combs with a newly formed band, The Ponies. It’s unfortunate the crowd thinned out after Luce’s set because there was much more to enjoy from the Ponies as they delivered a compelling performance. A set that was punctuated with multiple high points from DePrato’s guitar, they served to drive home the engaging songs from this band. With a solid early start, this band shows a lot of potential and hopefully we’ll be seeing more from them in the future.

ANTEMASQUE sell out GAMH with Le Butcherettes

ANTEMASQUE_postPhotos by Pedro Paredes // Written by Scotland Miller //

ANTEMASQUE with Le Butcherettes //
Great American Music Hall – San Francisco
August 12th, 2014 //

The harsh aftermath that are the days following Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival was soothed by a special sold-out Tuesday at the Great American Music Hall. Two bands that are sure to draw crowds wherever they go, ANTEMASQUE and Le Butcherettes, delivered a power-packed night of music complete with dropped jaws and torn vocal chords.

Pedro Paredes Haz-3

On support of their new album entitled Cry Is for the Flies, Le Butcherettes is fronted by vocalist/guitarist/keyboardist Teri Gender Bender and drummer Lia Braswel, with production support from Omar Rodriguez-Lopez. They are billed as a garage-punk band from Mexico and rely heavily on the simplistic formula that is “screw you, I’m gonna play what I want.”

This tactic of sonic shock rock is accompanied by Gender Bender’s politically-charged lyrics and her onstage antics, which included a bloodied kitchen apron, a broomstick crucifixion, a deep-throat of the microphone and a bit of crotch-first crowd surfing. To put it lightly, this girl is an eye-catcher on stage and will certainly make you a fan after a live performance. She even hit the bass player in the face with her shoe from across the stage! The energy that emanates from this group is shocking and undoubtedly best appreciated live.

Pedro Paredes Haz-7

A new project called ANTEMASQUE emerged earlier this year from longtime friends and familiar duo Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala, formerly of The Mars Volta and At the Drive-In. They are also joined by fellow TMV drummer David Elitch, as well as efforts from the Red Hot Chili Peppers legend Flea. Originally intended to release only a few singles in April of this year (“4AM”, “Hangin’ in the Lurch” and “People Forget”), the project evolved into the digital release of a 10-track self-titled album (read our review here) released in July with a subsequent quick two-week tour, finishing up with two shows in Los Angeles. They put a progressive spin on blues rock and punk music in a way that feels very new, which admittedly is a holy grail in the music industry. Fans of The Mars Volta shouldn’t be disappointed with this new material, but instead should recognize the new direction of these talented musicians.

Pedro Paredes Haz-23

At the exact moment of conclusion of Le Butcherettes’ opening set, the crowd immediately elbowed their way closer to the tiny stage at The Great American. A giant mass of cookie-cutter faces with stretched earlobes, flannel over shirts, IPA T-shirts, corduroy jackets, fedoras and beards all pushed forward to get a closer look at their heroes. It’s amazing the ferocity that such artists can evoke in their fans. It was refreshing to see. Not only was the reception of this performance accepted with nothing but screams of elation, but every single lyric for every song was also spouted by the vast majority of the audience. This might not be much of a notable occurrence, if it weren’t for the fact that most of this music has only been available to the public for a matter of about five or six weeks.

Pedro Paredes Haz-24

The setlist consisted of about an hour of material not quite encompassing the entirety of their self-titled release. The energy level achieved by the opening act never let up. Some of the highlighted performances came during a vibrantly charged rendition of “Hangin’ in the Lurch,” and a ripping guitar solo and jam session during “Providence.” There were a few moments of story time where Cedric explained how his grandmother was responsible for his being allowed to sing as a kid, and a quick comment about how ANTEMASQUE as a band were able to defy the music reviewers and make some music that was “all proggy prog prog” and didn’t have “a bunch of crazy time changes,” but these moments were offset by the pure magic that this pairing of musicians produced.

The sounds of ANTEMASQUE are different enough from that of their previous works, which sets this project apart from being just another time waster. Music fans will surely enjoy this act if they are ever lucky enough to see it in person.

Mac DeMarco dazzles sold-out Great American Music Hall

Mac DeMarcoPhotos by Pedro Paredes // Written by Kevin Quandt and Pedro Paredes //

Mac DeMarco with Calvin Love, Juan Wauters and Holy Shit! //
Great American Music Hall – San Francisco
July 8th, 2014 //

Mac DeMarco can do little wrong at this current time as he skyrockets the indie charts, likely to make the jump to the next level any week here. Returning to the City, both of his gigs at the Great American Music Hall sold out within days. Over the course of Tuesday’s show, his third studio album Salad Days was well-represented as he wove between albums and various cover songs. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves with so many up-and-coming acts being featured on this night. So, light up a smoke, rock your favorite 5-panel hat and let us tell you about it.

Uruguayan singer Juan Wauters was the first act to hit the stage. Equipped only with his trusty acoustic guitar and his charismatic ways, he quickly engaged with an audience that seemed a bit shy at the beginning. However, the growing masses ended up cheering enthusiastically after each song. Covering tracks from his impressive solo debut N.A.P. North-American Poetry, he was soon joined on stage by a small band that helped his folk-oriented ballads get a very unique sound, a bit more dirty and gravitating toward garage folk.

By the time Calvin Love had wrapped up a stellar set, the youthful crowd was chomping at the bit to get down and weird to the “jizz jazz” — how the 24-year-old DeMarco (guitar, lead vocals) likes to describe his music — stylings that included Peter Sagar (guitar), Pierce McGarry (bass) and Joe McMurray (drums). The band was tuned and ready to go before its set time, so the quartet said “fuck it” and launched into its most recent title track, “Salad Days”.

Mac DeMarco

DeMarco’s fans screamed in sheer delight as he transformed himself into some sort of pop-slacker, earning hoots and howls from a bevy of females in the crowd. His rise to King Weirdo status has been swift, and it’s been for good reason. His likeability, coupled with his unique playing style, is pretty damned infectious, after all. “Blue Boy” and other more recent cuts were featured early on before drawing into his back catalog, pleasing the longtime fans with “I’m a Man” and “Rock and Roll Night Club”.

As the evening carried on and the crowd got more rowdy, DeMarco lit up a crowd-pleaser in the form of “Ode to Viceroy”, a tender tribute to his favorite brand of Canadian cigarettes. As is tradition with DeMarco’s shows, the crowd tossed smokes onstage and even lit ’em up, likely much to the chagrin of the Great American Music Hall. Yet, it’s unpredictable moments like these that have made the British Columbia native’s shows so sought after these days.

Mac DeMarco

The dual-cover encore started with a nod to the Bay Area in the form of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” before bringing up the opening bands and friends, including Mikal Cronin, for a singalong to Neil Young’s “Unknown Legend”. DeMarco asked the crowd to “take a knee for Neil”, and all obliged as the majority belted out the song’s lyrics with a deep passion for the moment — because certainly, it was a good one.

As we watch DeMarco climb from underground slacker to bonafide indie celebrity, one can only wonder when he’ll peak, but if I know one thing, it won’t be soon that more are joining the “cult of weird” he reigns over.

Deafheaven with Wreck & Reference //
Great American Music Hall — San Francisco
July 2nd, 2014 (Wednesday) //

All hail the post-metal gods as Deafheaven return to their home city for what is sure to be a banner night of progressive noise in the City. Deafheaven have had their ups and downs in the past year, but are now set on a clear course to dominate the new-school of metal fans that have flocked to this act. 2013’s acclaimed album Sunbather truly put this band on the map, and after some personnel issues, they have tightened up the band and have embarked on a sizable spring/summer jaunt.

The complex interplay between the melodic and abrasive is a key theme for Deafheaven who have elevated black metal to a more palpable space. Some may frown on this, but a new audience has risen to appreciate the dark beauty that acts like Deafheaven deliver. We implore you to take a chance with these local, heavy heat-seekers this Wednesday at the legendary Great American Music Hall as they play alongside Wreck & Reference.

Failure //
Great American Music Hall — San Francisco
May 15th, 2014 (Wednesday) //

Wanna go see one of the best alternative rocks bands from the 90’s you may have never heard of? Well, ya should, because LA-based Failure have reunited, recently toured with Tool and are basically having a second life some 16 years after calling it quits. What set Failure apart from their contemporaries so many years ago was their dynamic guitar work with the use of signal processing and a bevy of impressive effects. Their disband in 1997 splintered the group into various projects such as A Perfect Circle, Autolux and Queens of the Stoneage.

The subsequent reunion took place in February at the El Rey in LA, followed by the announcement of a grip of shows with Tool, A Perfect Circle and other related acts. Shortly thereafter, an announcement of a new release gave longtime fans even more to rejoice about with a forthcoming batch of spaced-out, grunge-leaning rock anthems. Great American Hall will be the first intimate setting that Bay Area fans will have to see this prolific California rock act this upcoming Wednesday, as this will be presented as “An Evening With”. -Kevin Quandt
