SF Show of the Week // GO4FREE to Cut Copy (DJ set) at Mezzanine 7/18 (SAT)

Cut CopyWritten by Nik Crossman //

Cut Copy (DJ set) with Knightlife, Cooper SaverJeffery Paradise //
Mezzanine – San Francisco
July 18th, 2015 //

Inspired by “indie low-fi stuff as much as dance,” Dan Whitford embarked on his musical journey in 2001 when Modular Records signed the new DJ’s solo project under the name “Cut/Copy.” While Whitford occasionally enlisted help from friends, the first few years of Cut Copy live performances were mostly Whitford performing a DJ set where he sampled and remixed his own music.

In 2003, Tim Hoey (guitar) and Mitchell Scott (drums) joined Whitford to develop the well-known sound of Cut Copy, with Ben Browning adding bass guitar in 2010. The band continues to record remixes of popular bands like Jagwar Ma, The Rapture, Death Cab for Cutie, Juan MacClean, Maroon 5 and more.

Cut Copy also run underground dance label Cutters Records and continue to release albums for Knightlife (also performing on Saturday night), Kauf and the Miracles Club, Nile Delta and more, as well as releasing experimental mixtapes like last month’s A Forest Through the Trees.

Whiteford and Hoey use DJing to connect with fans and have fun while experimenting with the amalgamation of rock, disco, indie and pop that has become the band’s sound over the years. Saturday’s DJ set will demonstrate their passion for the experiential innocence music has always brought them.

Contest ends Friday at 3 p.m.

Following the crowd, Ultra Records quickly picked up Le Youth, releasing his first EP, which BBC Radio 1 dubbed “Record of the Week”, in July of 2013.

Le Youth continues to produce get-up-and-move sounds with the release of “Dance With Me” and “Feel Your Love” in 2014 as well as “Real” and “Touch” already this year.

SF Show of the Week // GO4FREE to Mystikal at Mezzanine 6/19 (FRI)

MystikalWritten by Molly Kish //

Mystikal with DJ Apollo, DJ Supreme, DJ Pos Red //
Mezzanine – San Francisco
June 19th, 2015 //

New Orleans-bred, fiya-spitting rapper/actor and Gulf War veteran Michael Lawrence Tyler, better known in the hip-hop community as Mystikal, brings his spicy Cajun rap game to Mezzanine this Friday with support from DJ Apollo, DJ Supreme and DJ Pos Red. Making his debut in 1994 on local Louisiana label Big Boy Records, he became instant competition for rival crew Cash Money Records members Lil’ Wayne and BG. Mystikal gained the attention of Jive record label reps and subsequently his mentor Master P through two of his hottest tracks, which both diss the Cash Money label, before signing on to be a No Limit solider in the mid-90’s and releasing his third and fourth albums through the label.

After breaking off on his own in 1999, Mystikal hit the peak of his commercial success with his 2000 album Let’s Get Ready, which features the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs No. 1 single “Danger (Been So Long)” and The Neptunes-produced hit “Shake Ya Ass”. 2001’s Tarantula brought about the radio hit single “Bouncin’ Back”, which earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album and Best Male Rap Solo Performance in 2003 as well as an acting role in the film “13 Dead Men”.

Eventually squashing his beef with Lil’ Wayne and dealing with legal issues, Mystikal signed on to Cash Money Records in 2011 and has been seen on BET’s “The Cypher” amongst several festival stages throughout the 2010’s. Most recently appearing on Mark Ronson’s fourth studio album Uptown Special, Mystikal lends his vocal stylings to hit single “Feel Right” and is currently on a nationwide tour spreading his lyrical heat and charisma throughout the states. Register below to catch him this Friday in SF.

Girlschool are still teaching fans how to rock hard more than 35 years later

GirlschoolBy Mike Rosati //

Girlschool with Crucified Barbara //
Slim’s – San Francisco
May 24th, 2015 //

Before Sunday’s show at Slim’s, I was not familiar with Girlschool. However, learning that this UK band got together after The Runaways broke up and ran with Motörhead over the years piqued my interest.

Formed in 1978, Girlschool are known as “the longest running all-female rock band” and are still active after more than 35 years. With their cult following gathering at Slim’s in SF this past weekend, they hit upon a number of fan favorites, including “Hit & Run” and “Race With the Devil”, both of which had the crowd bouncing up and down.

Crucified Barbara

Crucified Barbara

Serving as one of the night’s three opening acts, Crucified Barbara was also unknown to me, but they quickly made me a fan, tearing up the stage with their heavy riffs and some serious shredding. These bad-ass Swedish beauties had a few fans proclaiming their love between songs. While it was difficult to see them perform due to limited lighting on stage, they sounded great.

Canadian boy bands Old James and Velvet Black, touring with the gals and acting as their roadies/techs, also opened the show.

Royal Blood give Slim’s a royal ass-kicking with Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich joining duo onstage

Royal BloodPhotos by Mike Rosati // Written by Anthony Presti //

Royal Blood //
Slim’s – San Francisco
April 15th, 2015 //

Royal Blood, a band from England that burst onto the scene in 2013, made their mark in SF by selling out Slim’s with back-to-back shows. Their sound is like a mesh of revered rockers Queens of the Stone Age, Jack White, Led Zeppelin, CKY and Muse. The one thing that sets them apart is that all their viciousness stems from two dudes playing a bass guitar and drums. Singer/bassist Mike Kerr’s tone relies on modest equipment, paired with heavily distorted bass and a “cocktail” of pedals, while drummer Ben Thatcher contributes steady and precise power drumming reminiscent of a young Dave Grohl. It’s no surprise that they’ll actually be touring with the Foo Fighters later this year.

Those lucky enough to snag a ticket for the band’s two sold-out shows were in for a treat. While there may be only two guys on stage, there was no lack of enthusiasm. On Wednesday night, Thatcher approached the stage wearing a Giants baseball cap and blasting hip-hop that got the crowd pumped. Kerr slyly stepped onto the stage and plunged into the second track from their self-titled album, “Come on Over”. It was impressive to witness such a full sound as Kerr hit notes on his bass that most the time sounded like dueling guitars. “San Francisco, make some noise! We’ll be new friends tonight,” Kerr shouted after a roaring applause and just before the duo busted into “You Can Be So Cruel”.

Royal Blood

For such a young band, it’s impressive how many songs they have that are recognizable. Some songs sound like ones you might have heard before, but they have a knack for writing heavy tunes that carry a pulse and catchy choruses that you don’t mind getting stuck in your head. There’s a reason why they’ve been acknowledged by bands like Arctic Monkeys, Foo Fighters and even Jimmy Page, and it’s surely just the beginning. They know how to ignite a crowd with their banter, as Kerr gave props to the Wednesday night crowd by admitting “we played here last night, and you guys are kind of kicking their asses.”

With hard work comes reward, and the band played its entire album. Other crowd-pleasers were “Little Monster”, the blues-ridden “Figure It Out”, “Blood Hands” and its final song “Out of the Black” when Metallica’s Lars Ulrich came out and played drums while Thatcher stage dove and crowd surfed.

Setlist:
Come on Over
You Can Be So Cruel
Figure It Out
Better Strangers
Little Monster
Blood Hands
Careless
Ten Tonne Skeleton
Loose Change
Out of the Black

Public Works – San Francisco
March 12th, 2015 //

World-renowned musician, producer, DJ, filmmaker, composer, actor and Blue Bottle Coffee espresso muse James Murphy returns to Public Works this Thursday night for a rare DJ set with Eug (FACE) serving as support. Known as the electro-punk archetype from his seminal career as the frontman for LCD Soundsystem, Murphy has played a key role in the evolution of modern-day dance music over the past two decades.

Forming his own record label (DFA Records) in 2001 with co-founders Jonathan Galkin and Tim Goldsworthy, Murphy provided a home for prolifically like-minded artists as well as a launching pad for some of today’s hottest touring acts: Hot Chip, Holy Ghost!, Factory Floor, Yacht, The Juan Maclean and more. After LCD played their last show ever at Madison Square Garden in 2011, Murphy continued branching out as a hands-on producer, getting involved in both Arcade Fire’s 2014 hit album Reflektor as well as several other creative projects including Despacio, remixing sound samples from the 2014 US Open, directing a short film for Canon’s Project Imagination and collaborating with the co-owner of Blue Bottle Coffee to inspire his own blend of espresso.

Rustie: January 14th (WED) @ The Independent // BUY TICKETS
Scottish producer and electronic innovator Russell Whyte, otherwise known as Rustie, brings his “Green Language World Tour” to The Independent this Wednesday. Releasing his Sunburst EP and Glass Swords LP on Warp Records between the years 2007-11, Rustie’s name rose quickly in the UK dance scene with “some of the freshest, most exciting electronic dance music,” as Dusted Magazine pronounced. His tracks from Glass Swords were even used in a British advertisement for adidas and the Square Enix video game “Sleeping Dogs.” Furthermore, the record went on to win The Guardian’s prestigious “First Album” award. Touring behind his follow-up album Green Language that dropped in August, the 13-track effort has already received critical praise in the states, with Pitchfork naming his tracks “Raptor” and “Attak” (featuring Danny Brown) as two of 2014’s best. Debuting a stunning new stage setup for his largest tour to date, Rustie will be displaying immersive 3D visuals (provided by A-Rock), along with several extravagant effects. Don’t miss this larger-than-life set in one of SF’s most intimate venues.

Contest ends Wednesday, January 14th at Noon.

The Fresh & Onlys: January 15th (THUR) @ Great American Music Hall // BUY TICKETS
The Fresh & Onlys have remained a key cog in SF’s “new garage rock” movement, but the quartet led by Tim Cohen of Black Fiction offers more than just driving, heavily-distorted guitar riffs. Cohen and his three sidekicks — bassist Shayde Sartin, guitarist Wymond Miles and drummer Kyle Gibson — also dabble in psychedelia, new wave, acid folk and 80’s jangle pop. With their catalog spread across multiple record labels, they’ve found a more permanent home in Brooklyn’s own Mexican Summer, which released their 2012 LP Long Slow Dance, 2013 EP Soothsayer and latest full-length album House of Spirits last year. Headlining their 10-year anniversary show at the Great American Music Hall on a Thursday night with support from Cool Ghouls, Mr. Elevator & the Brain Hotel and Fine Points, this local foursome will be ready to give the hometown crowd a night it won’t forget.

Top 5 Shows of 2014
1. Darkside at The Fillmore – San Francisco, CA – January 24th
Looking at my top five shows list for 2014, it appears I favor the weird, ya know, the good weird. This Darkside performance, the only SF show ever (for now) since Nicolas Jaar and Dave Harrington have put the project on indefinite hold, had patrons at The Fillmore in SF breathing and moving in unison. There was a magical feeling in the air as the hybrid of electronic and organic played out wonderfully with the duo tipping their hat to the past and setting a new standard for the brave new future of live music.

2. Panda Bear at The Fillmore – San Francisco, CA – May 22nd
3. tUnE-yArDs at The Fillmore – San Francisco, CA – June 6th
4. Phish at MGM Grand – Las Vegas, NV – October 31st
5. Volcano Choir at The Fillmore – San Francisco, CA – January 21st

Top 5 Albums of 2014
1. Run the JewelsRun the Jewels 2
Ever since Jamie and Mikey blew my mind performing Run the Jewels almost in its entirety at The Independent in August of 2013, I’ve been a loyal RTJ soldier. And without taking a break, El Producto and Killer Mike stepped it up to an even higher plateau with their production precision, an uncanny balance of fun and intense, while lyrically honing more on the important issues of our time. Sensing the unstoppable momentum, Run the Jewels are already heading back into the studio for Run the Jewels 3. When Mike was recently asked if they’d continue to name their albums numerically, he said “Why not?!? Zeppelin did it!” Exactly. Say it with me now: Festival headliners circa 2016?

2. The War on DrugsLost in the Dream
3. D’Angelo – Black Messiah
4. Aphex TwinSyro
5. The Antlers – Familiars

Top 5 Songs of 2014
1. Sturgill Simpson – “Turtles All the Way Down”
This is country music turned on its head, while staying mostly true to the hallmarks of the genre. Lyrically subversive while instrumentally emotive to the core, this song kept me coming back throughout 2014. It’s positive message of love winning over all else is certainly timeless, but when was the last time you heard a country tune tell a story of mind over matter transcendence? “There’s a gateway in our minds that leads somewhere out there, far beyond this place / Where reptile aliens made of light, cut you up and pull out all your pain.” Stirgill Simpson is as progressive as you can get within the realm of Americana, urging the listener to both think and feel.

2. St. Vincent – “Digital Witness”
3. Future Islands – “Seasons (Waiting on You)”
4. FKA twigs – “Two Weeks”
5. Flying Lotus – “Never Catch Me” feat. Kendrick Lamar

Top 5 Shows of 2014
1. Nine Inch Nails & Soundgarden at Red Rocks Amphitheatre – Morrison, CO – July 21st
What a dream come true. Having the opportunity to see two of my favorite childhood bands at one of the best venues in the country would be hard to beat any year, let alone in 2014. Sharing the bill with Soundgarden on this tour, Trent Reznor made the most of a minimalist stage setup and trimmed-down lineup of sidekicks. Of the four shows (Red Rocks, Chula Vista, Irvine and Hollywood) I saw on this tour, this one felt particularly special. If this was one of the last times I ever got to see Nine Inch Nails perform live, it was a night I will never forget.

2. Jack White at The Fonda Theatre – Los Angeles, CA – June 10th
3. Cinquanta featuring Puscifer, A Perfect Circle and Failure at The Greek Theatre – Los Angeles, CA – May 10th
4. Queens of the Stone Age at The Forum – Los Angeles, CA – October 31st
5. Tool at Valley View Casino Center – San Diego, CA – March 16th

Top 5 Albums of 2014
1. The Black KeysTurn Blue
Akron’s favorite rockers answered the call this year, following up their Grammy-winning album El Camino with arguably their most ambitious effort to date — especially when you consider the turmoil that surrounded Dan Auerbach’s life at the time of its recording. Over the last five years, the Keys have become one of rock’s biggest bands, but they haven’t stopped taking risks as a result. Turn Blue dabbles in a myriad of styles, from the psychedelic sound of Pink Floyd on its opening track “Weight of Love” to the hip-hop groove on “10 Lovers.” For as many critics as they have, Auerbach and Patrick Carney have come a long way since their early years as strictly a blues duo.

2. The War on DrugsLost in the Dream
3. Jack WhiteLazaretto
4. Aphex TwinSyro
5. Death from Above 1979The Physical World

Top 5 Songs of 2014
1. Jack White – “High Ball Stepper”
Jack White seems to be on another level these days. The former White Stripe has grown into one of rock ‘n’ roll’s most exciting talents, and this blues-heavy, instrumental track showcases that better than any other offering on Lazaretto. White’s ferocious guitar riffs dominate the tune, taking listeners on an emotional roller coaster from start to finish. And when he plays “High Ball Stepper” live, the song takes on a new whole life of its own.

2. Foo Fighters – “Something for Nothing”
3. Interpol – “All the Rage Back Home”
4. TV on the Radio – “Happy Idiot”
5. Tycho – “Awake”

Top 5 Shows of 2014
1. Jack White at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium – San Francisco, CA – August 22nd
From the dramatic curtain drop that slammed into high-octane rock, this show never let off the gas. Even with a bum ankle, Jack White stalked the stage and held power over the crowd. When the slowest moments of a show are White Stripes ballads that you’re giddy to hear and the other half of the show is headbanging, guitar-slinging rock, it’s easy to see how this show cemented itself as the best of 2014.

2. Atomic Bomb! The Music of William Onyeabor at The Warfield – San Francisco, CA – May 6th
3. The War on Drugs at The Independent – San Francisco, CA – April 1st
4. Run the Jewels at Mezzanine – San Francisco, CA – November 14th
5. Duck Sauce at Outside Lands Music Festival – August 9th

Top 5 Albums of 2014
1. Flying LotusYou’re Dead!
This album makes me feel like I’m actually traveling through the underworld to the land of the dead. From front to back, the first thing that caught me about this album was its consistent message. Steven Ellison has an inviting sense of storytelling that’s infused with hip-hop but touches on an array of different music styles, involving a star-studded cast of guests, including Kendrick Lamar, Thundercat and Snoop Dog. I have a feeling Flying Lotus is on the forefront of creative hip-hop and that this album will prove to be influential down the line. More importantly, I just love listening to it. Taking wild turns from frenetic to serene, listening to this album from start to finish is a journey.

2. Aphex TwinSyro
3. Run the JewelsRun the Jewels 2
4. Future IslandsSingles
5. Tweedy – Sukierae

Top 5 Songs of 2014
1. Run the Jewels – “Oh My Darling Don’t Cry”
The minimalist production and deep, rumbling bass frequencies have helped this track become my No. 1 listened to on the album and also No. 1 for the year. The complimentary flow that El-P and Killer Mike have together is on display in this track. This cut has infected my brain like a virus (the good kind?), and I just can’t get enough.

2. Future Islands – “Seasons (Waiting on You)”
3. Sam Smith – “I’m Not the Only One”
4. Flying Lotus – “Never Catch Me” feat. Kendrick Lamar
5. Perfume Genius – “Queen”

Top 5 Shows of 2014
1. Future Islands at Coachella Music and Arts Festival, Weekend 1 – Indio, CA – April 12th
It’s been a banner year for the Baltimore darlings we have grown to love as Future Islands. Breaking through the underground touring circuit to being a highly sought-after festival act was quick and clean as the passionate stage performance of Samuel Harrington could not be ignored by growing audiences. A packed Gobi Tent was eating from the frontman’s palm as Herrington poured himself out on stage, belting out a set heavy on new tracks and old favorites. It was a pivotal point where both the band and audience knew that Future Islands had arrived at the next stage of their career.

2. The Cure at BottleRock Napa Valley – Napa, CA – May 30th
3. Phish at MGM Grand Arena – Las Vegas, NV – October 31st
4. Connan Mockasin at The Independent – San Francisco, CA – May 15th
5. Deerhoof at Great American Music Hall – San Francisco, CA – November 18th

Top 5 Albums of 2014
1. The War on DrugsLost in the Dream
Adam Granduciel had one helluva 2014 to brag about. His third studio album Lost in the Dream was an overwhelming success, and all for good reason as the lush waves of rock swell over the listener like a warm Christmas sweater, just less ugly than the one you wore to that one party. “Under the Pressure” opens this release in epic fashion and does not let up from there. Guitar rock is not dead!

2. Todd Terje – It’s Album Time
3. Run the JewelsRun the Jewels 2
4. D’Angelo – Black Messiah
5. White Fence – For the Recently Found Innocent

Top 5 Songs of 2014
1. Flying Lotus – “Never Catch Me” (feat. Kendrick Lamar)
Steven Ellison’s left-field meditation on death, as demonstrated on 2014’s release You’re Dead!, is not for everyone and is more about the full album than the sum of its parts (tracks). However, there is one shining beacon of a collaboration that could not be cast aside in the form of “Never Catch Me”. The partnership of one of the hottest MCs with one of the most sought-after producers was meant to be a brutally infectious slice of off-kilter street music.

2. Caribou – “Can’t Do Without You”
3. Future Islands – “Seasons (Waiting on You)”
4. Beck – “Blue Moon”
5. Ariel Pink – “Put Your Number in My Phone”

Top 5 Shows of 2014
1. Phish at MGM Grand – Las Vegas, NV – October 31st
Phish has made the tradition of covering other artists albums on Halloween, and this year they completely outdid themselves by covering essentially an album of only narrative and spooky sounds. The Disney-produced album The Thrilling and Chilling Sounds of the Taunted House was turned into a rock opera of sorts as Trey and company worked through completely new songs based off just minimal sounds, but the night didn’t just end there. The band played this rock opera sandwiched between two very strong sets of original Phish songs that could have held its own alone.

2. Lettuce’s Late Night in Red Barn at Summer Camp Music Festival – Chillicothe, IL – May 22nd
3. Future Islands at Coachella Music and Arts Festival, Weekend 1 – Indio, CA – April 12th
4. Ryan Adams at The Fox Theater Pomona – Pomona, CA – October 11th
5. Todd Terje at FYF Fest – Los Angeles – August 24th

Top 5 Albums of 2014
1. Ryan Adams – Ryan Adams
When someone as prolific as Ryan Adams puts out a new record, you buy that record and you listen intently. The songs in his first self-titled album may seem simple at first listen, but they stay with you in the back of your mind until you just can’t take it and you re-listen again and again. This is exactly how what I’ve been doing the past few months since the release. Songs like “Gimme Something Good” and “Am I Safe” prove once again that Adams is still on top of his game.

2. The War on DrugsLost in the Dream
3. moe. – No Guts, No Glory
4. Todd Terje – It’s Album Time
5. Greensky Bluegrass – If Sorrows Swim

Top 5 Songs of 2014
1. Future Islands – “Seasons (Waiting on You)”
“People change / You know but some people never do / You know when people change, they gain a piece but they lose one too.” These lyrics are so uplifting and real, and the music to accompany these amazing lyrics ties the emotion perfectly together.

2. The War on Drugs – “Under the Pressure”
3. The Barr Brothers – “Come in the Water”
4. Temples – “Shelter Song”
5. Caribou – “Can’t Do Without You”

Top 5 Shows of 2014
1. Darkside at The Fillmore – San Francisco, CA – January 24th
The album Nicolas Jaar and Dave Harrington put together in 2013 was a delight for the ears, but with the show they played at The Fillmore, they were going after every sense in your body. Jaar once said that Darkside’s music was more experiential rather than musical, and they surely succeeded in delivering one of the best musical experiences to all the lucky attendants on that cold January night.

2. Future Islands at The Chapel – San Francisco, CA – April 10th
3. St. Vincent at The Fox Theater Oakland – Oakland, CA – March 22nd
4. James Blake at The Chapel – San Francisco, CA – December 7th
5. Old Crow Medicine Show at The Masonic – San Francisco, CA – September 20th

Top 5 Albums of 2014
1. BeckMorning Phase
Beck’s Morning Phase follows the same breezy style as Sea Change, but the latter’s serenity seems to come from darker places. Morning Phase is, as the title suggests, a bit brighter and sets the tone for all the good things yet to come.

2. Run the JewelsRun the Jewels 2
3. Real EstateAtlas
4. The War on DrugsLost in the Dream
5. Perfume Genius – Too Bright

Top 5 Songs of 2014
1. alt-J – “Nara”
It is hard to isolate “Nara” as the best song of Alt-J’s latest album This is All Yours since the story told in it is not exclusive to that song and it comes back in different sections of the album (as well as in some of the musical arrangements). But “Nara”, a song about love, deserves to be listened again and again. The 2:58 mark is bliss to my ears.

2. tUnE-yArDs – “Water Fountain”
3. Run the Jewels – “Love Again”
4. Perfume Genius – “Fool”
5. Angel Olsen – “Hi-Five”

Top 5 Shows of 2014
1. Nine Inch Nails & Soundgarden at Shoreline Amphitheatre – Mountain View, CA – August 24th
I had never seen either band live before and based on my experience, it was like they had never broken up or aged since the ’90s. Amazing stage/light shows to go along with what was hands down my most eagerly anticipated show of the year.

2. Cibo Matto at Slim’s – San Francisco, CA – February 26th
3. American Football at The Fillmore – San Francisco, CA – December 12th
4. Failure at Great American Music Hall – San Francisco, CA – May 14th
5. Crosses at The Independent – San Francisco, CA – March 30th

Top 5 Albums of 2014
1. St. VincentSt. Vincent
This album comes off like a chameleon, with many shifts but always staying very characteristically St. Vincent. I feel that she is one of the more important artists to come around over the last few years, and I am excited to see what she does next.

2. Nothing – Guilty of Everything
3. BeckMorning Phase
4. Fugazi – First Demo
5. The War on DrugsLost in the Dream

Top 5 Songs of 2014

Spoon have a knack for throwing a good toe tapper in their albums. This song is short and sweet, and you cannot help but get caught up in its infectiousness.

3. St. Vincent – “Prince Johnny”
4. TV on the Radio – “Could You”

Top 5 Shows of 2014
1. James Blake at The Chapel – San Francisco, CA – December 7th
I feel bad telling friends about how great this show was since so few people were able to get tickets. An intimate venue hosting such a phenomenal artist was a no-brainer for my top pick. James covered hits from his albums as well as debuted new tracks and an incredible interlude of house jams. I just wish more friends could have seen this!

1. Run the JewelsRun the Jewels 2
What else can be said about this album that hasn’t been covered already? An outstanding sequel to Run the Jewels that expands on the original with top-notch production and punishing delivery from El-P and Killer Mike. Without a doubt my top choice of the year.

2. Syd Arthur – A Monstrous Psychedelic Bubble
3. D’Angelo – Black Messiah

I imagine D’Angelo coming back with his long-awaited album in December showed which writers/blogs/etc. wrote their “Best of the Year” lists early. His style of soulful R&B is sorely needed, and “Sugah Daddy” is my favorite from the album. Looking forward to his tour in 2015!

Top 5 Shows of 2014
1. MIA at Shoreline Amphitheatre for BFD 2014 – Mountain View, CA – June 1st
It had been four years since I saw MIA live and even though I’d prefer to see her play her own show rather than a set at a music festival, I was super excited to see her at BFD last summer. It was the first time in nearly 10 years that my cousin and I went to LIFE105’s annual summer show together. We lucked out and upgraded our tickets just in time to see MIA’s performance. Both of us were out of our seats, singing and dancing along to every song as soon as her set started. I was beside myself as MIA herself made her way off the stage, up into the seats of the venue and stopped near our row to spit lyrics as fans gathered and danced around her, myself included. I still can’t believe I danced with MIA!

2. OK Go at The Independent – San Francisco, CA – July 16th
3. Die Antwoord at The Fillmore – San Francisco, CA – May 22nd
4. Sylvan Esso at The Fillmore – San Francisco, CA – June 6th
5. MS MR at The Fillmore – San Francisco, CA – April 15th

Top 5 Albums of 2014
1. Sylvan Esso – Sylvan Esso
When I covered Sylvan Esso at The Fillmore earlier this year (when they opened for tUnE-yArDs), I had no idea who they were but ended up leaving the show a fan. Their self-titled debut album is an uplifting mix of danceable electropop tracks and indie rock that’s easy to lose yourself in. Their sparkly, layered and melodic sounds translate well whether you’re listening to the album or seeing them live. Sylvan Esso is one of three albums I bought in 2014, and it’s been on repeat ever since I picked it up.

2. Glass Animals – Zaba
3. Die Antwoord – Donker Mag
4. Iggy Azalea – The New Classic
5. First Aid Kit – Stay Gold

Top 5 Songs of 2014
1. Tove Lo – “Habits (Stay High)”
I really enjoy the simple percussion-driven melody and voluptuous vocals of Tove Lo’s hit single “Habits (Stay High)”. The subtle, yet engaging buildup to her belting, emotionally-charged lyrics has me singing along and turning it up every time I hear it on the radio. While it is very catchy, it’s not a super dancey song. However, it is a great go-to for karaoke.

2. Die Antwoord – “Rat Trap 666”
3. Sylvan Esso – “Hey Mami”
4. First Aid Kit – “My Silver Lining”
5. The Dead Weather – “Buzzkill(er)”

Gaining near immediate traction, New York picked up on their Midwest mixtapes and helped further promote the duo’s unique blend of indie-rock and hip-hop samples into the mainstream, ranking on media year-end “Best of” and Top 10 lists nationwide. Beyond dominating the first decade of the 2000’s mashup game, The Hood Internet also landed corporate sponsorship from the prolific N.Y. streetwear brand Mishka and released a studio album on the Decon Label in 2012. Minus the Bear show they still bring it after rocking Slim’s

Minus the BearPhotos by Diana Cordero // Written by Andrew Pohl //

Minus the Bear with Mansions //
Slim’s – San Francisco
November 20th, 2014 //

Becoming attached to any particular album by an artist is a natural event, but not always so easy to do. For fans of Minus the Bear, it could be tough to say that any of their fantastic albums is really their “best”, but I think it’s fair to say that their most fun album would be They Make Beer Commercials Like This. The seven-song EP turns 10 years old this year, and along with promoting the release of their latest album Lost Loves, the band has been celebrating with a tour that has featured the EP in its entirety and a grip of tunes from their vast catalog.

They Make Beer Commercials Like This was the first album that I had every heard by Minus the Bear, and I have always loved it, so I was very excited to be able to see the album performed live from front to back. Opening up the evening was Mansions, an indie-rock trio from Seattle by way of Louisville, Ky. They were a perfect pairing for the night, bringing an alt-centric set of songs at just the right length. Singer/guitarist Christopher Browder’s refreshingly clean vocal approach set nicely atop the steady drums and fuzzed-out bass. I would highly recommend this band for fans of Death Cab for Cutie, HUM, Ume and Placebo — just to name a few.

Minus the Bear

As Minus the Bear took the stage, the sold-out crowd let out a mighty roar in approval, ready to rock. Singer Jake Snider greeted the crowd and said, “They Make Beer Commercials Like This”, to which the crowd gleefully responded in delight. As the band maneuvered through each track on the album, the crowd gladly sang along and at many times began dancing (it is OK to move around at indie-rock shows, FYI). Every member of the band was on point. Guitarist Dave Knudson’s signature tapping and guitar-pedal manipulation has always been a focal point for (musical) gearheads out there — yours truly included. The sounds he is able to create and replicate live are continually impressive. Bassist Cory Murchy and fill-in drummer (and drum tech for the band) Kieffer Matthias kept the rhythm high and tight while synth player Alex Rose filled in the gaps with spacey pads and buzzy square waves. A key ingredient in the Minus the Bear mix has always been the smooth vocal stylings of Snider. Never abrasive, but also never subdued, Snider lets you know that tonight is going to be fun — and you believe it.

Following the completion of the album, the band continued with cuts from Menos El Oso, Infinity Overhead, Planet of Ice, Omni, and from its latest album Lost Loves. Lost Loves is actually a collection of never-before-released tracks, all of which bare (but not bear, haha) that familiar Minus the Bear quality of dynamic instrumentation, crystal-clear vocals and high-quality production. Ending the night was the song “Knights”, which in this guy’s opinion, may be one of the best songs ever written. It’s the perfect length, has a hook that just kills and is just damn fun to move your feet to.

As the band left the stage, they thanked the crowd and the crowd responded in kind. Overall, it was a very enjoyable evening and proof that Minus the Bear are still bringing it live.

SF Shows of the Week // GO4FREE to Daedelus, Lagwagon or Mirah

11.4.14_SotW_postBy Mike Frash //

Win a pair of free tickets to one of our SF Shows of the Week by entering your name and email below.

• Daedelus: November 7th (FRI) @ Mezzanine
• Mirah: November 9th (SUN) @ The Independent
• Lagwagon: November 9th (SUN) @ Slim’s

Daedelus: November 7th (FRI) @ Mezzanine // BUY TICKETS

Alfred Darlington is a producer and instrumentalist (he holds his keyboard for proof in his press shot!) that isn’t afraid of duality. Just look at his 2014 record The Light Brigade, a contemplative work that balances ambiance and moments of intensity, then compare it to his upbeat, raucous live Boiler Room set from a year ago (embedded above). This prodigious music maker isn’t afraid to take the listener on a journey based in weirdness, and I mean weird in a very good way — think along the lines of Flying Lotus and Animal Collective.

Contest ends Friday, November 7th at Noon.

Mirah: November 9th (SUN) @ The Independent // BUY TICKETS

Brooklyn-based singer and songwriter Mirah is kicking off a West Coast tour this weekend, making a Sunday night stop at The Indy. Touring in support of Changing Light, her fifth full length, Mirah’s experimental pop traverses a musical landscape that explores existence and the ever-changing nature of life. Sounds like a deep way to start a new week!

Contest ends Friday, November 7th at Noon.

Lagwagon: November 9th (SUN) @ Slim’s // BUY TICKETS

Lagwagon was one of my favorite acts when I first discovered punk rock in the mid 90’s, and the Fat Wreck Chords staple from SoCal has been putting music in its place for over 20 years. Even though the touring has never stopped, Lagwagon’s first album in nine years, Hang, was just unleashed last week. End your weekend with some scorching melodic punk that never got soft (we’re looking at you Blink).

Contest ends Friday, November 7th at Noon.

SF Show of the Week // GO4FREE to Courtney Barnett & San Fermin at Slim’s 11/3 (MON)

Courtney Barnett & San Fermin with Mikhael Paskalev //
Slim’s — San Francisco
November 3rd, 2014 //

We’ve got a tasty co-headlining show for you this Monday in SF at Slim’s. Enter your name below to win a free pair of tickets to this show.

Courtney Barnett has a pretty unique angle on the whole singer/songwriter concept. Deadpan lyrical delivery and post-grunge elements over surf rock sounds smack you on the surface, but it’s the stream-of-conscious-inspired songwriting that bounces around in your brain long after listening.

Take for example “Avant Gardner”, one of the best songs of 2014. Like the exposition of a David Lynch film, everything seems happy and normal, until you strip below the surface.

Barnett reveals her inner monologue with a mix of daily details and deeper thoughts, explicitly copping to feelings of anxiety and maybe even a bit of an existential crisis.

One of my favorite lines of the year will likely be, “The paramedic thinks I’m clever cause I play guitar, I think she’s clever cause she stops people from dying.”

The Australian native has relentlessly toured all over the world this year in support of her breakthrough album The Double Ep: A Sea of Split Peas, including at Outside Lands’ 2014 edition (read our festival review here), making waves wherever she goes.

Sharing the bill with Barnett is San Fermin, Ellis Ludwig-Leone’s emotionally resonant and theatrical project. Their show earlier this year at The Chapel was a wondrous experience, as word of mouth has definitely gotten out on San Fermin. See these guys and gals before they move on to bigger venues.

It may be on a Monday, but this double-banger is our prescribed “Show of the Week.”

Buy tickets if you know you want to go.

The musical handyman Sondre Lerche will be bringing his soft and upbeat sounds to The Independent this week. His steady flow of genre-spanning releases continued this year with the full-length album Please. The prolific Norwegian has been through a recent divorce from his wife, which can be felt on some of the tracks from his latest release, but is turning it around into some great music and accompanying performances. Don’t miss this one!

Contest ends Thursday, October 9th at Noon.

Bahamas: October 10 (FRI) @ Slim’s // Buy Tickets

Does kicking back with a cold beer and your toes in the sand sound like a good idea to you? Well, if you don’t have any vacation hours left, you can come to Slim’s and listen to the soulful sounds of Bahamas. Although not from the Bahamas, Canadian-born guitar player Afie Jurvanen has a relaxing sound about him that soothes the mind just like the subtle rushing of a gentle shore break. If you enjoy a solid night of six-string strumming and a smooth voice, then be sure to join us.

Contest ends Friday, October 10th at Noon.

Christopher Owens: October 11 (SAT) @ Great American Music Hall // Buy Tickets

The Great American Music Hall will host Christopher Owens this week. On tour in support of his second solo release A New Testament, Owens will be gracing the house with his natural combination of R&B, gospel, and country sound that is sure to please fans of fundamental American music. After leaving his previous project, Girls, Owens has started to truly find his own sound with his follow up to his debut solo album, Lysander, in 2013. Let the Bam Fam treat you to a night out!
